Book excerpt: Showing in stunning detail the phenomenal evolution of one of America's most historic cities from its beginnings as a town to its current expanse, this "Every Square Inch of Norfolk" book presents an astonishing array of historic Norfolk-area maps spanning 200 years. Arranged side by side and scaled to identical sizes, the maps make it possible to pinpoint every major change in the city, almost decade by decade. The book utilizes the most important detailed maps ever drawn of the entire city, beginning with the little-known War of 1812 map, the first great map to cover all the areas that make up today's Norfolk. (And if you are reading other books in the Every Square Inch of Norfolk series, then this book is especially indispensible, as the maps in the book serve as the basemaps to which all the other books in the series refer.) Along with its extensive indexes and penetrating and meticulously researched textual background information, Evolution of A City In Maps is an ideal resource for the study of every facet of Norfolk history and geography, making it not only an invaluable reference but also a significant contribution to American geography.

Book Rail Depots of Eastern North Carolina

Download or read book Rail Depots of Eastern North Carolina written by Larry K. Neal Jr. and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Railroads have been an integral part of North Carolina since the 1850s, allowing goods and people to travel across the state or to other areas of the country. For many years, the main focus of small towns and large cities in the state was the railroad depots. Residents could purchase train tickets, businesses sought to ship or receive goods for market, and kids loved to visit and wave to the passing train crews. During the Christmas season, presents ordered from catalogs would arrive by Railway Express and were delivered to homes across the area. Mail was also delivered by rail to the depots, even if the train did not stop at a particular community. This book hopes to provide rail enthusiasts, local and economic historians, and history lovers in general a look back at the heyday of railroads and how much they affected daily life in North Carolina.

Book Norfolk and Western Railway Stations and Depots

Download or read book Norfolk and Western Railway Stations and Depots written by C. Nelson Harris and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tracks of the Norfolk and Western Railway snaked through Virginia's Shenandoah Valley and the coalfields of West Virginia. For nearly 100 years, the Norfolk and Western brought freight, passengers, and economic vitality to large cities and rural mining towns. At each stop was the depot or station; some stations were large, architecturally ornate structures that represented the muscular energy and romantic era of this great steam railway with its famed J-class engines. In other places there were small wooden depots that depicted the hard-scrabble life of the mining communities, tucked amid steep mountain valleys that were indelibly shaped by the railway's presence. Today some of those structures remain, while many disappeared when the railway ceased passenger or other service. The Norfolk and Western eventually merged with the Southern Railway, and though the trains of the Norfolk Southern still run along those same lines, they simply pass by where they used to stop many years ago.
