Book The Population of the UK

Download or read book The Population of the UK written by Danny Dorling and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you know that where you were born may affect when you die? The Population of the UK explains how geography - in the widest sense - makes a difference to life outcomes. It explains the geographical differences in key socio-economic variables - like education, health, and work - that illustrate the UK′s stark social inequalities and affect everyone′s lives. Written for undergraduate students across social science disciplines, this unique text presents a social geography of the UK which: Contains over 100 maps. These are drawn in proportion to the numbers of people being depicted and so represent the human geography of the UK in a fair way. Visualises quantitative evidence. The very latest statistics from numerous sources - including the 2010 election - reveal the many aspects of the underlying geographical structure of society in the UK. Relates geographies of identity to geographies of inequality, mortality, work, and settlement, and in a final chapter shows how the UK′s population fits in to the world picture of who has most of what, and where. Using the most advanced cartographic techniques of social mapping employed anywhere in the world, The Population of the UK explains the nuts and bolts of UK population in comparative context. A note on data: Much of the data comes from 2010 and 2011. However, because as yet only the age and sex data from the 2011 census has been released the book shows 2001 patterns where only census data can reveal it. As 2011 census data is released, Danny plans to update the maps on-line.

Book Field Systems and Farming Systems in Late Medieval England

Download or read book Field Systems and Farming Systems in Late Medieval England written by Bruce M.S. Campbell and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The later Middle Ages was an overwhelmingly rural world, with probably three out of four households reliant upon farming for a living. Yet conventional accounts of the period rarely do justice to the variety of ways in which the land was managed and worked. The thirteen essays collected in this volume draw upon the abundant documentary evidence of the period to explore that diversity. In the process they engage with the issue of classification - without which effective generalisation is impossible - and offer a series of solutions to that particularly thorny methodological challenge. Only through systematic and objective classification is it possible to differentiate between and map different field systems, husbandry types, and land-use categories. That, in turn, makes it possible to consider and evaluate the relative roles of soils and topography, institutional structures, and commercialised market demand in shaping farm enterprise both during the period of mounting population before the Black Death and the long era of demographic decline that followed it. What emerges is an agrarian world more commercialised, differentiated, and complex than is usually appreciated, whose institutional and agronomic contours shaped the course of agricultural development for centuries to come.

Book Government s Response to the Heseltine Review

Download or read book Government s Response to the Heseltine Review written by Great Britain: Department for Business, Innovation & Skills and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-03-18 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Heseltine, 'No stone unturned: in pursuit of growth' (available at http://www.bis.gov.uk/assets/biscore/corporate/docs/n/12-1213-no-stone-unturned-in-pursuit-of-growth) made 89 wide-ranging recommendations to the Government, across areas of public policy that affect economic growth. Today, the Government announced it is accepting the overwhelming majority of these recommendations and setting out how the Government is addressing the priorities Lord Heseltine identified, equipping the UK to compete and thrive in the global race. At the heart of this is action to reverse excessive centralisation, freeing local areas from Whitehall control and giving businesses and local leaders the power and the funding to do what they need to achieve their potential. The Government will create a new Single Local Growth Fund from 2015 that will include the key economic levers of skills, housing and transport funding, with full details set out at the forthcoming Spending Round. It will also harness the power of competition to get the best from places, negotiating a local Growth Deal with every Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), with the allocation of the Single Local Growth Fund reflecting the quality of their ideas and local need. This is a something-for-something deal and local areas will be challenged to put in place the right governance across local authorities, pool resources, and find match funding from the private sector. £2.6 billion has already been allocated through the Regional Growth Fund, forecast to deliver and safeguard 500,000 jobs and £13 billion of private investment

Book Writing in Nonstandard English

Download or read book Writing in Nonstandard English written by Irma Taavitsainen and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000-02-15 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates linguistic variation as a complex continuum of language use from standard to nonstandard. In our view, these notions can only be established through mutual definition, and they cannot exist without the opposite pole. What is considered standard English changes according to the approach at hand, and the nonstandard changes accordingly. This book offers an interdisciplinary and multifaceted approach to this central theme of wide interest. The articles approach writing in nonstandard language through various disciplines and methodologies: sociolinguistics, pragmatics, historical linguistics, dialectology, corpus linguistics, and ideological and political points of view. The theories and methods from these fields are applied to material that ranges from nonliterary writing to canonized authors. Dialects, regional varieties and worldwide Englishes are also addressed.
