Book excerpt: Norfolk 1: Norwich and North-East and its companion, Norfolk 2: North-West and South, aim to provide a lively and uniquely comprehensive survey of the architectural treasures of Norfolk. Extensively revised and expanded, these new editions of Sir Nikolaus Pevsner's original volumes bring together the latest research on a county which has some of the most attractive buildings in England. The gazetteer is enhanced by an introduction which provides a perceptive overview of the region's architectural inheritance, and is illustrated by numerous text figures, maps and 130 photographs (many specially commissioned). Pre-eminent in this volume is the city of Norwich, rich in major buildings of outstanding quality, from Norman cathedral and castle to twentieth-century city hall and university. Supreme among the ports described in this volume is the medieval walled town of Great Yarmouth, whose highly individual history and buildings are here examined in detail for the first time. There are also full descriptions of many appealing market towns, whilst the rest of the county is revealed through succinct accounts of its parish churches and less well-known buildings. Abbey ruins, brick eighteenth-century farmhouses and estate cottages in quiet inland villages contrast with coastal fishing settlements and resorts. Great barns testify to the significance of agriculture. Country houses range from the magnificent Jacobean Blickling Hall to seaside extravaganzas by Lutyens. Detailed indexes make this not only an essential reference book, but also a guide book for anyone interested in the rich region of Norfolk.

Book excerpt: THE DEBUT CRIME THRILLER OF THE YEAR! "I bloody loved the book. Wow! Loved the twists and turns!" Ali Dunn A girl's body found mutilated by a boat's propeller, another dumped at the bottom of a slipway, and a disused Norfolk mill, hiding the secret to both. "A COLD DENSE shadow fell over Jane Richardson as she hurried along the concrete towpath. To her left, moonlight danced over the River Bure's untroubled surface as it slipped silently past, heading back the way she'd come. A low-hanging branch scratched at her face as she ducked underneath. From somewhere far behind her came the shriek of laughter, slicing through the air, only to fall silent a moment later to leave nothing but the sound of her high heels, click-clacking out a stark but steady beat." When a girl's body is found strangled, raped, and horrifically mutilated by a boat's propeller, deep in the heart of the Norfolk Broads, newly arrived Detective Inspector John Tanner is asked to assist with the investigation. At first, all the evidence points to a man who had a multi-million pound reason to kill her. But when an alibi is produced from an unexpected source, and another body appears at the base of a slipway, Tanner finds himself turning to local girl, Detective Constable Jenny Evans for help. As a more intimate relationship begins between them, they find themselves facing a race against time to identify a lethal adversary, one with a lust for blood and a mind set on revenge. Set within the mysterious beauty of the Norfolk Broads, this fast-paced British detective series is a cozy murder mystery that will have you guessing until the very end, when the last shocking twist is finally revealed. Broadland is a totally addictive crime thriller, the first in a chilling series of serial killer books, ones which will rapidly convert followers of Faith Martin, Joy Ellis, Damien Boyd, Michael Hambling and Helen H. Durrant into David Blake devotees.

Book Michael Falcon Norfolk s Gentleman Cricketer

Download or read book Michael Falcon Norfolk s Gentleman Cricketer written by Stephen Musk and published by Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians. This book was released on 2010 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Falcon (1888-1976) was educated at Harrow and Cambridge and proved himself to be a good enough fast bowler to be selected fourteen times for the Gentlemen. He declined to qualify by residence to play for Middlesex, preferring instead to play for his beloved Norfolk in the Minor Counties Championship. In this competition his exploits as a hard-hitting, fast-bowling all-rounder made him a dominant figure in Norfolk elevens. Appointed captain in 1912, he was still in office in 1946; he was the only man to skipper his county before the First World War and after the Second. An astute and popular leader, he was worth his place in the team to the end, finishing top of the batting averages in his final season, when aged 58. Thought of highly enough by the authorities to be co-opted on to the MCC Committee at the early age of 26, he was the only bowler of genuine pace to sit on the sub-committee which ruled on bodyline. He is most famous for the part he played in helping Archie MacLaren’s eleven to defeat Warwick Armstrong’s previously invincible 1921 tourists. Informed opinion suggests that his refusal to play for Middlesex cost him the chance to play Test cricket, but his loyalty to Norfolk was paramount and he never expressed any regrets. As a Tory M.P. and a landowning grandee, one might expect him to have been a somewhat remote and forbidding character, but he was a quiet and modest man with a love of the game which gave him a bond with the common cricketer. On one occasion he was more than ready to lead a singalong with the players of a village cricket club. Stephen Musk tells a story of privilege, public service and the pastime of cricket.
