Book Nordic Prosody

Download or read book Nordic Prosody written by Reijo Aulanko and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the revised texts of talks and posters given at the Nordic Prosody X conference, held at the University of Helsinki, in August 2008. The contributions by Scandinavian and other researchers cover a wide range of prosody-related topics from various theoretical and methodological points of view. Although the history of the conference series is Nordic and Scandinavian, the current volume presents studies that are of mainly Baltic origin in the sense that of the eight languages presented in the proceedings only English is not natively spoken around the Baltic Sea. Research issues addressed in the 25 articles include various aspects of speech prosody, their regional variation within and across languages as well as social and idiolectal variation. Speech technology and modelling of prosody are also addressed in more than one article.

Book Typological Studies in Word and Sentence Prosody

Download or read book Typological Studies in Word and Sentence Prosody written by Tomas Riad and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-02-26 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the recent advances in the integration of lexical tone and intonation in phonological theory, all too often the study of intonation and the study of lexical tone are viewed as belonging to different research traditions. This collection strengthens the integrated approach by studying tone and intonation within a common framework, and by tracing their interaction in specific prosodic systems. Some papers deal with the structural properties of lexical tone and intonation, while others focus on the historical development of prosodic systems. The volume also includes a re-evaluation of a classic paper on the typology of tone rules, and a survey of features signalling question intonation in African languages.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the recent advances in the integration of lexical tone and intonation in phonological theory, all too often the study of intonation and the study of lexical tone are viewed as belonging to different research traditions. This collection aims to strengthen the integrated approach by studying tone and intonation within a common framework, and by tracing their interaction in specific prosodic systems. Some papers deal with the structural properties of lexical tone and intonation, e.g. of Zina Kotoko (Cameroon), Borgloon Dutch (Belgium), and European Portuguese, while others focus on the historical development of the prosodic systems of Basque, Kagoshima Japanese and Scandinavian. Book The Prosody of Greek Speech

Download or read book The Prosody of Greek Speech written by A.M. Devine and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reconstruction of the prosody of a dead language is, on the face of it, an almost impossible undertaking. However, once a general theory of prosody has been developed from eliable data in living languages, it is possible to exploit texts as sources of answers to questions that would normally be answered in the laboratory. In this work, the authors interpret the evidence of Greek verse texts and musical settings in the framework of a theory of prosody based on crosslinguistic evidence and experimental phonetic and psycholinguistic data, and reconstruct the syllable structure, rhythm, accent, phrasing, and intonation of classical Greek speech. Sophisticated statistical analyses are employed to support an impressive range of new findings which relate not only to phonetics and phonology, but also to pragmatics and the syntax-phonology interface.

Book New Trends in Nordic and General Linguistics

Download or read book New Trends in Nordic and General Linguistics written by Martin Hilpert and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a survey of current work in Nordic and General Linguistics, with a special focus on language contact. The papers in this book were presented at the 11th International Conference of Nordic and General Linguistics (ICNGL) in Freiburg. The ICNGL conference series aims to facilitate the exchange of ideas on Scandinavian and other languages, between researchers from the Nordic countries and elsewhere. The present volume focuses on language contact, which has always been a topic of great interest in Nordic Linguistics. Additionally, the contributions in this book address issues of phonology, morpho-syntax, syntax, and grammaticalization. The book is meant to be a snapshot of Nordic Linguistics as it is practiced today, reflecting at the same time its established research traditions as well as its forages into new methodologies and theories.

Book Nordic Prosody

Download or read book Nordic Prosody written by Wim A. van Dommelen and published by Peter Lang Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2001 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the revised texts of the lectures given at the Nordic Prosody VIII conference, held at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Trondheim, Norway), in August 2000. Most of the nineteen contributions deal with prosodic aspects of Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Estonian and Finnish, thus including in the notion of Nordic even the major Finno-Ugrian languages around the Baltic Sea. The scope of the papers is wider than on former occasions, not only representing well-established approaches to prosodic research but also covering new areas like the investigation of speech errors, the auditory processing of pitch, voice imitation, or multimodal speech perception.
