Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction When the study of heredity and variation first came to be treated as a scientific subject-and this, one must remember, was only just over a hundred years ago-there was an unfortunate separation between the disciplines of cytology and experimental breeding. This separation was based partly on a lack of understanding and partly on a lack of the desire to understand. Even WILLIAM BATESON, the first apostle of mendelism in England, had a blind spot for cytology and for many years dogmatically refused to believe that MENDEL'S determinants were transmitted and distributed by the chromosomes. This separation between cytology and experimental breeding is one which persists, in a measure, even today, simply because there are two quite different, though complementary, techniques available for the study of heredity and variation. On the one hand, one can study directly the structure and behaviour of the actual vehicles which transmit the genetic determinants from one generation to the next. This is the method employed by those who study genetics through a microscope. The alternative method is that used by the experimental breeder who, in default of being able to watch the hereditary factors segregate from each other directly, is obliged to examine the constitution of the germ cells indirectly by sampling, and usually at random, the products of a controlled mating.

Book Japanomania in the Nordic Countries 1875 1918

Download or read book Japanomania in the Nordic Countries 1875 1918 written by Gabriel P. Weisberg and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensive publication, complete with hundreds of illustrations by such renowned artists as Carl Larsson, Edvard Munch, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Helene Schjerfbeck, Pekka Halonen, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Gerhard Munthe, Pietro Krohn, and Frida Hansen, among others, offers an unprecedented study of Japanese influence on the visual arts in the Nordic countries. This unlikely diffusion of Japanese culture, known collectively as Japonisme, became increasingly apparent in England, France, and elsewhere in Europe during the 19th century, although nowhere was the influence seemingly as pervasive as it was throughout the Nordic countries. The book reveals how the widespread interest in Japanese aesthetics helped to establish notions of a fundamental unity between the arts and transformed the region's visual vocabulary. The adoption of Japanese motifs and styles in Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark gave a necessary cohesion to their existing artistic language, creating a vital balance within and among all of the decorative arts. Distributed for Mercatorfonds Exhibition Schedule: Ateneum Art Museum, Finnish National Gallery, Helsinki (02/18/16-05/15/16) National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo (06/16/16-10/16/16) Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen (01/19/17-04/23/17)

Book The Voyage of the Vega Round Asia and Europe Volume II Illustrated Edition Dodo Press

Download or read book The Voyage of the Vega Round Asia and Europe Volume II Illustrated Edition Dodo Press written by A. E. Nordenskiold and published by . This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baron (Nils) Adolphe/Adolf Eric/Erik Nordenskiöld/ Nordenskjöld (1832-1901), also known as A. E. Nordenskioeld was a Finnish geologist, mineralogist and arctic explorer and a member of the prominent Finland-Swedish Nordenskiöld family of scientists. In 1856, Nordenskiöld was appointed Docent in Mineralogy at the IAU Helsinki. However, for political reasons he had to flee in the following year to Sweden, where he was called to the office of Director of the Mineralogical Department of the Swedish Museum of Natural History and to a professorship in Mineralogy at the Swedish Academy of Sciences. Nordenskiöld's participation in three geological expeditions to Spitsbergen, followed by longer Arctic explorations in 1867, 1870, 1872 and 1875, led him to attempt the discovery of the long-sought Northeast Passage. This he accomplished in the voyage of the Vega, navigating for the first time the northern coasts of Europe and Asia. He edited a monumental record of the expedition in five volumes, and himself wrote a more popular summary in two volumes entitled The Voyage of the Vega Round Asia and Europe (1881).

Book Shipwreck at Cape Flora

Book excerpt: Mentioned in BBC News: http: //www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-24281727 Benjamin Leigh Smith discovered and named dozens of islands in the Arctic but published no account of his pioneering explorations. He refused public accolades and sent stand-ins to deliver the results of his work to scientific societies. Yet, the Royal Geographic Society's Sir Clements R. Markham referred to him as a polar explorer of the first rank. Traveling to the Arctic islands that Leigh Smith explored and crisscrossing England to uncover unpublished journals, diaries, and photographs, archaeologist and writer P. J. Capelotti details Leigh Smith's five major Arctic expeditions and places them within the context of the great polar explorations in the nineteenth century

Book Martin Waldseem ller s Carta marina of 1516

Download or read book Martin Waldseem ller s Carta marina of 1516 written by Chet Van Duzer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-09 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents the first detailed study of one of the most important masterpieces of Renaissance cartography, Martin Waldseemüller’s Carta marina of 1516. By transcribing, translating into English, and detailing the sources of all of the descriptive texts on the map, as well as the sources of many of the images, the book makes the map available to scholars in a wholly unprecedented way. In addition, the book provides revealing insights into how Waldseemüller went about making the map -- information that can’t be found in any other source. The Carta marina is the result of Waldseemüller’s radical re-evaluation of what a world map should be; he essentially started from scratch when he created it, rejecting the Ptolemaic model and other sources he had used in creating his 1507 map, and added more descriptive texts and a wealth of illustrations. Given its content, the book offers an essential reference work not only on this map, but also for anyone working in sixteenth-century European cartography.
