Book Down the Nights and Down the Days

Download or read book Down the Nights and Down the Days written by Edward L. Shaughnessy and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2000-06-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This latest book from veteran O’Neillian Edward L. Shaughnessy examines the influence of the Irish playwright’s Catholic heritage on his moral imagination. Critics, due to O'Neill's early renunciation of faith at age 15, have mostly overlooked this presence in his work. While Shaughnessy makes no attempt to reclaim him for Catholicism, he uncovers evidence that O'Neill retained the imprint of his Irish Catholic upbringing and acculturation in his work. Shaughnessy discusses several key plays from the O’Neill cannon, such as Long Day’s Journey into Night, The Iceman Cometh, and Mourning Becomes Electra, as well as the lesser-known Ile and Days Without End. Winner of the Irish in America Manuscript competition, Down the Days and Down the Nights: Eugene O’Neill’s Catholic Sensibility is a compelling investigation into the psyche of one of the most brilliant, internationally honored playwrights of our time.

Bob remains on the Majors farm where he learns the values and ideals that sustain him through the many challenges of his life. Most prophetical among these lessons is that Bob's adoptive father, James Majors, tells him he believes in the ever present spirits of ancient Native Americans upon his land. The greatest test of Bob's faith and his most difficult challenge is resolved after a school is built upon the farmstead after the death of James Majors. Arrows summoned from the Quiver of Redemption settle the battle between the forces of good and evil raging within the halls of the schoolhouse. Book Billy Sunday and the Redemption of Urban America

Download or read book Billy Sunday and the Redemption of Urban America written by Lyle W. Dorsett and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1991 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lyle Dorsett's fresh biography offers a careful and frank assessment of Billy Sunday and his ministry. Quick to note Sunday's sincerity, dedication, and evangelistic success, Dorsett does not shrink from describing the more troublesome side of his career: how fame, financial success, and political influence worked to corrupt the evangelist and his family. The story of Billy Sunday is laced with contradictory elements: sacrifice and self-delusion, high purpose and triumphalism, identification with the poor and hobnobbing with the rich. The great value of Dorsett's account is his depiction of Billy Sunday as neither hero nor villain. Instead, Dorsett introduces a human figure whose struggle to redeem urban America in God's name involved both achievement and tragedy. - Foreword by Nathan O. Hatch.

Download or read book Redemption and Revolution written by Motoe Sasaki and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early twentieth century, a good number of college-educated Protestant American women went abroad by taking up missionary careers in teaching, nursing, and medicine. Most often, their destination was China, which became a major mission field for the U.S. Protestant missionary movement as the United States emerged to become an imperial power. These missionary women formed a cohort of new women who sought to be liberated from traditional gender roles. As educators and benevolent emancipators, they attempted to transform Chinese women into self-sufficient middle-class professional women just like themselves. As Motoe Sasaki shows in Redemption and Revolution, these aspirations ran parallel to and were in conflict with those of the Chinese xin nüxing (New Women) they encountered. The subjectivity of the New Woman was an element of global modernity expressing gendered visions of progress. At the same time it was closely intertwined with the view of historical progress in the nation. Though American and Chinese New Women emphasized individual autonomy in that each sought to act as historical agents for modern progress, their notions of subjectivity were in different ways linked to the ideologies of historical progress of their nations. Sasaki’s transnational history of these New Women explores the intersections of gender, modernity, and national identity within the politics of world history, where the nation-state increased its presence as a universal unit in an ever-interconnecting global context.

Book Redemption in Paradise

Download or read book Redemption in Paradise written by Shane Joseph and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2006-05-11 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "THERE ARE NO right or wrong choices. If your choices do not lead to wisdom, you will get other chances. In this life - or in another," says Gunananda, a fi fth century sage, somewhere in Sigiriya. This prediction follows a motley collection of tourists arriving in present-day Sri Lanka on a four-day tour. Aggressive Australian journalist Sarah has troubling visions of a past life. She desires John, an idealist from Vancouver writing a thesis on fear. American expatriates Margaret and Robert Keane are embroiled in a love-hate relationship, haunted by the memory of their dead son. Returning emigrant Lionel is anxiously seeking the country he left behind. And burly Jefferson conceals the secret that brought him east, whilst liberally indulging an appetite for prostitutes. Escorting them is hard-drinking Asoka, struggling to survive the hardships of life in the war-torn island. As they step on the tour bus, each traveller unknowingly makes an appointment with destiny. Beginning with a roadside shooting of terrorist suspects, the tour meanders through Kelaniya, Dambulla and the rock fortress of Sigiriya, culminating in Kandy. Then things go terribly wrong and unexpected events force them to a temple in the jungle and a meeting with the mysterious Buddhist nun Gunanandani. Mix in psychometry, a ghostly image captured on camera, arms smugglers and a tattered band of military deserters, and the travellers are swept into a confl ict that was never part of their itinerary. In the tragic climax at the crumbling temple, valuable lessons are learned, leaving lives indelibly changed. And the prophecy of Gunananda is fulfilled.
