Book Dynamics of Heterogeneous Materials

Download or read book Dynamics of Heterogeneous Materials written by Vitali Nesterenko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with the behavior of essentially nonlinear heterogeneous materials in processes occurring under intense dynamic loading, where microstructural effects play the main role. This book is not an introduction to the dynamic behavior of materials, and general information available in other books is not included. The material herein is presented in a form I hope will make it useful not only for researchers working in related areas, but also for graduate students. I used it successfully to teach a course on the dynamic behavior of materials at the University of California, San Diego. Another course well suited to the topic may be nonlinear wave dynamics in solids, especially the part on strongly nonlinear waves. About 100 problems presented in the book at the end of each chapter will help the reader to develop a deeper understanding of the subject. I tried to follow a few rules in writing this book: (1) To focus on strongly nonlinear phenomena where there is no small parameter with respect to the amplitude of disturbance, including solitons, shock waves, and localized shear. (2) To take into account phenomena sensitive to materials structure, where typical space scale of material parameters (particle size, cell size) are presented in the models or are variable in experimental research.

Book Nonlinear Waves in Elastic Crystals

Download or read book Nonlinear Waves in Elastic Crystals written by Gérard A. Maugin and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mathematical modelling of changing structures in materials is of increasing importance to industry where applications of the theory are found in subjects as diverse as aerospace and medicine. This book deals with aspects of the nonlinear dynamics of deformable ordered solids (known as elastic crystals) where the nonlinear effects combine or compete with each other. Physical and mathematical models are discused and computational aspects are also included. Different models are considered - on discrete as well as continuum scales - applying heat, electricity, or magnetism to the crystal structure and these are analysed using the equations of rational mechanics. Students are introduced to the important equations of nonlinear science that describe shock waves, solitons and chaos and also the non-exactly integrable systems or partial differential equations. A large number of problems and examples are included, many taken from recent research and involving both one-dimensional and two-dimensional problems as well as some coupled degress of freedom.

Book Wave Dynamics and Composite Mechanics for Microstructured Materials and Metamaterials

Download or read book Wave Dynamics and Composite Mechanics for Microstructured Materials and Metamaterials written by Mezhlum A. Sumbatyan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with topical problems concerning technology and design in construction of modern metamaterials. The authors construct the models of mechanical, electromechanical and acoustical behavior of the metamaterials, which are founded upon mechanisms existing on micro-level in interaction of elementary structures of the material. The empiric observations on the phenomenological level are used to test the created models. The book provides solutions, based on fundamental methods and models using the theory of wave propagation, nonlinear theories and composite mechanics for media with micro- and nanostructure. They include the models containing arrays of cracks, defects, with presence of micro- and nanosize piezoelectric elements and coupled physical-mechanical fields of different nature. The investigations show that the analytical, numerical and experimental methods permit evaluation of the qualitative and quantitative properties of the materials of this sort, with diagnosis of their effective characteristics, frequency intervals of effective energetic cutting and passing, as well as effective regimes of damage evaluation by the acoustic methods.

Book Nonlinear Waves and Offshore Structures

Download or read book Nonlinear Waves and Offshore Structures written by Cheung Hun Kim and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The responses of offshore structures are significantly affected by steep nonlinear waves, currents and wind, leading to phenomena such as springing and ringing of TLPs, slow drift yaw motion of FPSOs and large oscillations of Spar platforms due to vortex shedding. Research has brought about significant progress in this field over the past few decades and introduced us to increasingly involved concepts and their diverse applicability. Thus, an in-depth understanding of steep nonlinear waves and their effects on the responses of offshore structures is essential for safe and effective designs. This book deals with analyses of nonlinear problems encountered in the design of offshore structures, as well as those that are of immediate practical interest to ocean engineers and designers. It presents conclusions drawn from recent research pertinent to nonlinear waves and their effects on the responses of offshore structures. Theories, observations and analyses of laboratory and field experiments are expounded such that the nonlinear effects can be clearly visualized.

Book Localization And Solitary Waves In Solid Mechanics

Download or read book Localization And Solitary Waves In Solid Mechanics written by Alan R Champneys and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-11-30 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of recent reprints and new material on fundamentally nonlinear problems in structural systems which demonstrate localized responses to continuous inputs. It has two intended audiences. For mathematicians and physicists it should provide useful new insights into a classical yet rapidly developing area of application of the rich subject of dynamical systems theory. For workers in structural and solid mechanics it introduces a new methodology for dealing with structural localization and the related topic of the generation of solitary waves. Applications range from classical problems such as the buckling of cylindrical shells, twisted rods and pipelines, to the folding of geological strata, the failure of sandwich structures and the propagation of solitary waves in suspended beam systems.

In addition to new theoretical approaches in continuum mechanics and applications, the book puts an emphasis on discussing multi-physics problems.

Book Nonlinear Structural Dynamics Using FE Methods

Download or read book Nonlinear Structural Dynamics Using FE Methods written by James F. Doyle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Structural Dynamics Using FE Methods emphasises fundamental mechanics principles and outlines a modern approach to understanding structural dynamics. This will be useful to practising engineers but also students who will find advanced topics presented in an accessible manner. The book successfully presents the fundamentals of structural dynamics and infuses them with finite element (FE) methods. First, the author establishes and develops mechanics principles that are basic enough to form the foundations of FE methods. Second, the book presents specific computer procedures to implement FE methods so that general problems can be 'solved' - that is, responses can be produced given the loads, initial conditions and so on. Finally, the book introduces methods of analyses to leverage and expand the FE solutions.
