Book Methods in Nonlinear Plasma Theory

Download or read book Methods in Nonlinear Plasma Theory written by Ronald Davidson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods in Nonlinear Plasma Theory is from lectures given in graduate classes in both University of Maryland and University of California at Berkeley. To be able to understand fully the contents in this book, the reader is assumed to be a graduate student with background of classical physics and linear plasma waves and instabilities. This text is divided into two major parts. Part I deals with the coherent nonlinear phenomena, while Part II discusses the turbulent nonlinear phenomena. Six chapters comprise Part I, where basic equations and methods are described and discussed. Some of these methods are Vlasov-Maxwell equations and Korteweg-de Vries equation. Part II meanwhile has eight chapters that discuss frameworks and theories for weak plasma turbulence. Specifically, the weak turbulence theory is presented as it is applied to electromagnetic wave-particle interactions, nonlinear wave-wave interactions, and nonlinear wave-particle interactions. This book is a useful reference for students and researchers in the study of classical physics and plasma theory.

Book Linear and Nonlinear Theory of Grid Excitation of Low frequency Waves in a Plasma

Download or read book Linear and Nonlinear Theory of Grid Excitation of Low frequency Waves in a Plasma written by George L. Johnston and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The steady-state excitation of longitudinal waves by a pair of idealized grids immersed in a collisionless plasma and driven at a frequency small compared with the ion plasma frequency is investigated theoretically. In linear theory the Fourier-inversion integral which determines the spatial behavior of the potential in the plasma is expressed as a sum of two integrals which embody the interactions of phase-velocity components of the wave with ions and electrons. An appropriate choice of the deformed contour of integration permits evaluation of the response as the sum of the residue of the dominant 'ion-acoustic' pole and of the two branch-cut integrals. A perturbation-series expansion of the potential and the species distribution functions in the (nonlinear) Vlasov equation yields a hierarchy of equations. In each order the equations are linear in the perturbation quantities of that order and have driving terms composed of quadratic combinations of lower-order quantities. (Author).

Book Topics on Nonlinear Wave Plasma Interaction

Download or read book Topics on Nonlinear Wave Plasma Interaction written by BAUMGÄRTEL and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text presented here is an extended english version of a report by the authors which appeared in April 1983 at the Institute of Cosmical Research of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in German. It covers several selected topics on nonlinear wave-plasma interactio,ll in a treatment based on a hydrodynamic plasma description. Thus, no attempt has been made to give a comprehensive view on all aspects of the interaction of strong electromagnetic waves with plasmas. The text is partly introductory and presents partly current results. The authors hope that it will be of interest to students and scientists not only in the field of plasma physics. The authors thank Akademie-Verlag, Berlin and Birkhiiuser-Verlag, Basel for their encouragement to prepare the English manuscript and Mrs. Ch. Geier for carefully typing the final off-set version. Book Non Linear Theory and Fluctuations

Download or read book Non Linear Theory and Fluctuations written by A. I. Akhiezer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-03-22 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasma Electrodynamics, Volume 2: Non-Linear Theory and Fluctuations deals with the theory of nonlinear waves in a collisionless plasma, including the quasilinear theory, the theory of plasma turbulence, and the theory of electromagnetic fluctuations in a plasma. Topics covered range from nonlinear high-frequency waves in a cold plasma to the theory of plasma oscillations in the quasilinear approximation. Nonlinear wave-particle interactions are also discussed, along with scattering and transformation of waves in a plasma. Comprised of six chapters, this volume begins with a study of nonlinear waves in a collisionless plasma, focusing on nonlinear high-frequency waves in a cold plasma; Langmuir waves in a non-relativistic plasma; and longitudinal, transverse, and coupled longitudinal-transverse waves in a relativistic plasma. After expounding on the quasilinear theory, which describes the effects of the first approximation in terms of the plasma wave energy, the nonlinear interaction of waves and particles is considered. The last three chapters explore the theory of electromagnetic fluctuations in a plasma; the theory of scattering processes and the transformation of waves in a plasma; and the scattering of charged particles in a plasma. The polarization energy losses when charged particles move in a plasma are calculated. This book will be of interest to physicists.

Download or read book Nonlinear Physics of Plasmas written by Mitsuo Kono and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-17 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nonlinearity is one of the most important notions in modern physics. A plasma is rich in nonlinearities and provides a variety of behaviors inherent to instabilities, coherent wave structures and turbulence. The book covers the basic concepts and mathematical methods, necessary to comprehend nonlinear problems widely encountered in contemporary plasmas, but also in other fields of physics and current research on self-organized structures and magnetized plasma turbulence. The analyses make use of strongly nonlinear models solved by analytical techniques backed by extensive simulations and available experiments. The text is written for senior undergraduates, graduate students, lecturers and researchers in laboratory, space and fusion plasmas.

Book Theory of Mode Conversion and Wave Damping Near the Ion cyclotron Frequency

Download or read book Theory of Mode Conversion and Wave Damping Near the Ion cyclotron Frequency written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a variational technique, a set of coupled model equations for the mode-conversion process near the ion-cyclotron frequency is derived. The system is truncated to first order in Larmor radius but includes the effects of explicit gradients and a poloidal field. From the equations a conservation rule is extracted which ensures conservation of total energy and provides an explicit expression for the wave damping in differential form. The equations are integrated numerically for the standard cases of fast waves incident from either the low- or high-field sides of the mode-conversion layer. The scaling of the damping processes is discussed and implications for current rf-heating experiments on the Princeton Large Torus are drawn.

Book Nonlinear Theory of Electron Oscillations of a Collisionless Plasma in a Uniform Magnetic Field

Download or read book Nonlinear Theory of Electron Oscillations of a Collisionless Plasma in a Uniform Magnetic Field written by H. K. Sen and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Possibility of excitation of finite amplitude longitudinal waves in a collisionless and cold plasma in the presence of uniform magnetic field is demonstrated. Such waves are found to be anharmonic in shape, in contrast to the usual harmonic, that is, sinusoidal waves of the linear theory. These nonlinear plasma waves arise as a result of nonlinear motion and the dispersive nature of plasma media. The two competing processes, nonlinearity and dispersion in a moving plasma medium strike a balance to produce a quasi-steady state which can support finite amplitude waves. These waves are associated with large amplitude oscillating electric fields which may be responsible for coherent radio-to-microwave radiation from coronal plasma and particle acceleration during solar flares. The estimate of sporadic electromagnetic and particulate radiation is important for application to the solar flare patrol and the Air Force Communications System. (Author).
