Book Nonlinear Suppression of Range Ambiguity in Pulse Doppler Radar

Download or read book Nonlinear Suppression of Range Ambiguity in Pulse Doppler Radar written by Jon M. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2001-12 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coherent pulse train processing is most commonly used in airborne pulse Doppler radar, achieving adequate transmitter/receiver isolation and excellent resolution properties while inherently inducing ambiguities in Doppler and range. First introduced by Palermo in 1962 using two conjugate LFM pulses, the primary nonlinear suppression objective involves reducing range ambiguity, given the waveform is nominally unambiguous in Doppler, by using interpulse and intrapulse coding (pulse compression) to discriminate received ambiguous pulse responses. By introducing a nonlinear operation on compressed (undesired) pulse responses within individual channels, ambiguous energy levels are reduced in channel outputs. This research expands the NLS concept using discrete coding and processing. A general theory is developed showing how NLS accomplishes ambiguity surface volume removal without requiring orthogonal coding. Useful NLS code sets are generated using combinatorial, simulated annealing optimization techniques - a general algorithm is developed to extended family size, code length, and number of phases (polyphase coding). An adaptive reserved code thresholding scheme is introduced to efficiently and effectively track the matched filter response of a target field over a wide dynamic range, such as normally experienced in airborne radar systems. An evaluation model for characterizing NLS clutter suppression performance is developed - NLS performance is characterized using measured clutter data with analysis indicating the proposed technique performs relatively well even when large clutter cells exist.

Book excerpt: The book is organized into three parts, each one building on the material of the previous sections. Part I (Chapters 1-8) covers the basic principles to lay sound foundations for the following parts of the book. It emphasizes classic processing techniques, especially the fast Fourier transform (FFT), and microwave engineering issues, antennas, and hardware. The second part of the book deals with the theory and techniques specific to pulse Doppler radar. This is subdivided into Part IIA (Chapters 9-10), which covers high PRF pulse Doppler, and Part IIB (Chapters 11-15), which covers medium PRF pulse Doppler. A major theme is that of PRF selection and optimization, other waveform design issues, and the problem of ghosting. While high and medium PRF pulse Doppler techniques have become synonymous with airborne fire control radars, they are used over a broad spectrum of airborne and surface-based radar applications. Part II does emphasize the airborne radar case, but it does not neglect the surface-based radar. Finally, Part III (Chapters 16-19) presents a series of four case studies. Each of these case studies applies the material of Part II whilst also highlighting additional radar techniques (and, in some cases, non-radar considerations) specific to the application. Such is the prevalence of pulse Doppler radars today; the number of case studies that could have been considered is well into double figures. However, the four presented here suffice to illustrate the wide variety of pulse Doppler radar applications.

Book Application of L1 Reconstruction of Sparse Signals to Ambiguity Resolution in Radar

Download or read book Application of L1 Reconstruction of Sparse Signals to Ambiguity Resolution in Radar written by Fahad Shaban and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the proposed research is to develop a new algorithm for range and Doppler ambiguity resolution in radar detection data using L1 minimization methods for sparse signals and to investigate the properties of such techniques. This novel approach to ambiguity resolution makes use of the sparse measurement structure of the post-detection data in multiple pulse repetition frequency radars and the resulting equivalence of the computationally intractable L0 minimization and the surrogate L1 minimization methods. The ambiguity resolution problem is cast as a linear system of equations which is then solved for the unique sparse solution in the absence of errors. It is shown that the new technique successfully resolves range and Doppler ambiguities and the recovery is exact in the ideal case of no errors in the system. The behavior of the technique is then investigated in the presence of real world data errors encountered in radar measurement and detection process. Examples of such errors include blind zone effects, collisions, false alarms and missed detections. It is shown that the mathematical model consisting of a linear system of equations developed for the ideal case can be adjusted to account for data errors. Empirical results show that the L1 minimization approach also works well in the presence of errors with minor extensions to the algorithm. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the successful implementation of the new technique for range and Doppler ambiguity resolution in pulse Doppler radars.

Book Localized Optimization and Effectiveness Analysis of Medium PRF Airborne Pulse Doppler Radars in the Turkish Air Force

Download or read book Localized Optimization and Effectiveness Analysis of Medium PRF Airborne Pulse Doppler Radars in the Turkish Air Force written by Haldun Sifa and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of different pulse repetition frequencies (PRFs) delivers significantly different behaviors to airborne radars. For instance, the main purpose for using low PRF is to obtain an unambiguous range measurement. However, the tradeoff when using a low PRF is that the measurement of the target's radial velocity is highly ambiguous and can result in missing some target detections. On the other hand, high PRF is used to reduce or eliminate ambiguities in the measurement of radial velocity. A high PRF, however, causes a highly ambiguous range measurement. The true range is resolved by transmitting multiple waveforms with different PRFs. A modified form of pulse Doppler radar that operates at a medium PRF has both range and Doppler shift ambiguities. However, medium PRF is potentially better for detecting aircraft with low closing speeds than high PRF pulse Doppler. This thesis will focus on the effectiveness and localized optimization of medium PRF in airborne pulse Doppler radars, for the Turkish Air Force. This thesis will also present an analysis of medium PRF performance in a low altitude, air-to-air operating environment offering moderate range radar capability and also delivering acceptable range and Doppler resolution within that operating environment.
