Book Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Dynamical Systems

Download or read book Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Dynamical Systems written by Sandra Carillo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Dynamical Systems (NEEDS) provides a presentation of the state of the art. Except for a few review papers, the 40 contributions are intentially brief to give only the gist of the methods, proofs, etc. including references to the relevant litera- ture. This gives a handy overview of current research activities. Hence, the book should be equally useful to the senior resercher as well as the colleague just entering the field. Keypoints treated are: i) integrable systems in multidimensions and associated phenomenology ("dromions"); ii) criteria and tests of integrability (e.g., Painlev test); iii) new developments related to the scattering transform; iv) algebraic approaches to integrable systems and Hamiltonian theory (e.g., connections with Young-Baxter equations and Kac-Moody algebras); v) new developments in mappings and cellular automata, vi) applications to general relativity, condensed matter physics, and oceanography.

Book Direct and Inverse Methods in Nonlinear Evolution Equations

Download or read book Direct and Inverse Methods in Nonlinear Evolution Equations written by Robert M. Conte and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-10-21 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many physical phenomena are described by nonlinear evolution equation. Those that are integrable provide various mathematical methods, presented by experts in this tutorial book, to find special analytic solutions to both integrable and partially integrable equations. The direct method to build solutions includes the analysis of singularities à la Painlevé, Lie symmetries leaving the equation invariant, extension of the Hirota method, construction of the nonlinear superposition formula. The main inverse method described here relies on the bi-hamiltonian structure of integrable equations. The book also presents some extension to equations with discrete independent and dependent variables. The different chapters face from different points of view the theory of exact solutions and of the complete integrability of nonlinear evolution equations. Several examples and applications to concrete problems allow the reader to experience directly the power of the different machineries involved.

Download or read book The Painlev Handbook written by Robert M. Conte and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-23 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear differential or difference equations are encountered not only in mathematics, but also in many areas of physics (evolution equations, propagation of a signal in an optical fiber), chemistry (reaction-diffusion systems), and biology (competition of species). This book introduces the reader to methods allowing one to build explicit solutions to these equations. A prerequisite task is to investigate whether the chances of success are high or low, and this can be achieved without any a priori knowledge of the solutions, with a powerful algorithm presented in detail called the Painlevé test. If the equation under study passes the Painlevé test, the equation is presumed integrable. If on the contrary the test fails, the system is nonintegrable or even chaotic, but it may still be possible to find solutions. The examples chosen to illustrate these methods are mostly taken from physics. These include on the integrable side the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (continuous and discrete), the Korteweg-de Vries equation, the Hénon-Heiles Hamiltonians, on the nonintegrable side the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (encountered in optical fibers, turbulence, etc), the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation (phase turbulence), the Kolmogorov-Petrovski-Piskunov equation (KPP, a reaction-diffusion model), the Lorenz model of atmospheric circulation and the Bianchi IX cosmological model. Written at a graduate level, the book contains tutorial text as well as detailed examples and the state of the art on some current research.

Book Lectures on Nonlinear Evolution Equations

Download or read book Lectures on Nonlinear Evolution Equations written by Reinhard Racke and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book mainly serves as an elementary, self-contained introduction to several important aspects of the theory of global solutions to initial value problems for nonlinear evolution equations. The book employs the classical method of continuation of local solutions with the help of a priori estimates obtained for small data. The existence and uniqueness of small, smooth solutions that are defined for all values of the time parameter are investigated. Moreover, the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions is described as time tends to infinity. The methods for nonlinear wave equations are discussed in detail. Other examples include the equations of elasticity, heat equations, the equations of thermoelasticity, Schrödinger equations, Klein-Gordon equations, Maxwell equations and plate equations. To emphasize the importance of studying the conditions under which small data problems offer global solutions, some blow-up results are briefly described. Moreover, the prospects for corresponding initial boundary value problems and for open questions are provided. In this second edition, initial-boundary value problems in waveguides are additionally considered.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications NONLINEAR EVOLUTION EQUATIONS THAT CHANGE TYPE is based on the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 1988-89 IMA program on NONLINEAR WAVES. The workshop focussed on prob lems of ill-posedness and change of type which arise in modeling flows in porous materials, viscoelastic fluids and solids and phase changes. We thank the Coordinat ing Committee: James Glimm, Daniel Joseph, Barbara Lee Keyfitz, Andrew Majda, Alan Newell, Peter Olver, David Sattinger and David Schaeffer for planning and implementing an exciting and stimulating year-long program. We especially thank the workshop organizers, Barbara Lee Keyfitz and Michael Shearer, for their efforts in bringing together many of the major figures in those research fields in which theories for nonlinear evolution equations that change type are being developed. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, J r. ix PREFACE During the winter and spring quarters of the 1988/89 IMA Program on Non linear Waves, the issue of change of type in nonlinear partial differential equations appeared frequently. Discussion began with the January 1989 workshop on Two Phase Waves in Fluidized Beds, Sedimentation and Granular Flow; some of the papers in the proceedings of that workshop present strategies designed to avoid the appearance of change of type in models for multiphase fluid flow.

Book Nonlinear Evolution Operators and Semigroups

Download or read book Nonlinear Evolution Operators and Semigroups written by Nicolae H. Pavel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research monograph deals with nonlinear evolution operators and semigroups generated by dissipative (accretive), possibly multivalued operators, as well as with the application of this theory to partial differential equations. It shows that a large class of PDE's can be studied via the semigroup approach. This theory is not available otherwise in the self-contained form provided by these Notes and moreover a considerable part of the results, proofs and methods are not to be found in other books. The exponential formula of Crandall and Liggett, some simple estimates due to Kobayashi and others, the characterization of compact semigroups due to Brézis, the proof of a fundamental property due to Ursescu and the author and some applications to PDE are of particular interest. Assuming only basic knowledge of functional analysis, the book will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in nonlinear analysis and PDE, and to mathematical physicists.

Book Chaotic Dynamics

Download or read book Chaotic Dynamics written by T. Bountis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many conferences, meetings, workshops, summer schools and symposia on nonlinear dynamical systems are being organized these days, dealing with a great variety of topics and themes -classical and quantum, theoretical and experimental. Some focus on integrability, or discuss the mathematical foundations of chaos. Others explore the beauty of fractals, or examine endless possibilities of applications to problems of physics, chemistry, biology and other sciences. A new scientific discipline has thus emerged, with its own distinct philosophical viewpoint and an impressive arsenal of new methods and techniques, which may be called Chaotic Dynamics. Perhaps its most outstanding achievement so far has been to shed new light on many long standing issues involving complicated, irregular or "chaotic" nonlinear phenomena. The concepts of randomness, complexity and unpredictability have been critically re-examined and the fundamental importance of scaling, self-similarity and sensitive dependence on parameters and initial conditions has been firmly established. In this NATO ASI, held at the seaside Greek city of Patras, between July 11- 20, 1991, a serious effort was made to bring together scientists representing many of the different aspects of Chaotic Dynamics. Our main aim was to review recent advances, evaluate the current state of the art and identify some of the more promising directions for research in Chaotic Dynamics.
