Book excerpt: Recovery of tensile flow stress of four binary aluminum alloys and of the high-purity base alum inum was studied under no-load conditionat tem peratures of 80, 120, 160, and 200 C, and under conditions of creep strain at 160 C, for recovery times up to 1,000 hr. At the three higher recovery temperatures, 120, 160, and 200 C, and for the longer recovery times, the alloys Al-Mg, Al Zn, and Al-Cu all experienced a greater degree of recovery than the high-purity base aluminum. Of these three alloys, the Al-Cu alloy clearly exhibited the greatest degree of recovery. The Al-Ag alloy was excluded from the comparison be cause of an apparent strengthening process which occurred during recovery. All the alloys showed a strong increase in flow-stress recovery during creep strain over that experienced during no-load recovery; however, the relative order of recovery for the different alloys did not change.

Varying temperature experiments involved an abrupt temperature increase and a linearly increasing and decreasing temperature at a constant stress of 137.9 MPa (20 ksi). A temperature-compensated time by Sherby and Dorn was employed to represent the effect of temperature. The temperature history dependent theory described the test data quiet well for both increasing and decreasing temperature. The apparent activation energy of this alloy was found to be 49,000 cal/mole.

It is intended to provide an explanation of the possible microstructural developments that can occur with hot deformation of a variety of alloys and the kind of mechanical properties that can be anticipated. The microstructures that evolve with torsion, compression, extrusion and rolling are presented based on extensive analysis from polarized light optical microscopy (POM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) scanning electron-microscopy with electron backscatter imaging (SEM-EBSD) and orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). The microstructural analysis leads to detailed explanations of dynamic recovery (DRV), static recovery (SRV), discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (dDRX), discontinuous static recrystallization (dSRX), grain defining dynamic recovery (gDRV) (formerly geometric dynamic recrystallization gDRX) and continuous dynamic recrystallization involving a single phase (cDRX/1-phase) and multiple phases, (cDRX/2-phase). Hot working is carefully explained in the context of other elevated temperature phenomena, some of which overlap hot working. These include creep, superplasticity, cold working and annealing. Creep plasticity occurs at both warm and hot working temperatures, but is usually associated with lower strain-rates and relatively small strains. On the other hand superplasticity involves high tensile strains at similar temperatures, but lower strain rates than utilized in hot working--
