Book Boundary Stabilization of Thin Plates

Download or read book Boundary Stabilization of Thin Plates written by John E. Lagnese and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents one of the main directions of research in the area of design and analysis of feedback stabilizers for distributed parameter systems in structural dynamics. Important progress has been made in this area, driven, to a large extent, by problems in modern structural engineering that require active feedback control mechanisms to stabilize structures which may possess only very weak natural damping. Much of the progress is due to the development of new methods to analyze the stabilizing effects of specific feedback mechanisms. Boundary Stabilization of Thin Plates provides a comprehensive and unified treatment of asymptotic stability of a thin plate when appropriate stabilizing feedback mechanisms acting through forces and moments are introduced along a part of the edge of the plate. In particular, primary emphasis is placed on the derivation of explicit estimates of the asymptotic decay rate of the energy of the plate that are uniform with respect to the initial energy of the plate, that is, on uniform stabilization results. The method that is systematically employed throughout this book is the use of multipliers as the basis for the derivation of a priori asymptotic estimates on plate energy. It is only in recent years that the power of the multiplier method in the context of boundary stabilization of hyperbolic partial differential equations came to be realized. One of the more surprising applications of the method appears in Chapter 5, where it is used to derive asymptotic decay rates for the energy of the nonlinear von Karman plate, even though the technique is ostensibly a linear one.

Book Optimal Control

Download or read book Optimal Control written by William W. Hager and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: February 27 - March 1, 1997, the conference Optimal Control: The ory, Algorithms, and Applications took place at the University of Florida, hosted by the Center for Applied Optimization. The conference brought together researchers from universities, industry, and government laborato ries in the United States, Germany, Italy, France, Canada, and Sweden. There were forty-five invited talks, including seven talks by students. The conference was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and endorsed by the SIAM Activity Group on Control and Systems Theory, the Mathe matical Programming Society, the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), and the International Association for Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (IMACS). Since its inception in the 1940s and 1950s, Optimal Control has been closely connected to industrial applications, starting with aerospace. The program for the Gainesville conference, which reflected the rich cross-disci plinary flavor of the field, included aerospace applications as well as both novel and emerging applications to superconductors, diffractive optics, non linear optics, structural analysis, bioreactors, corrosion detection, acoustic flow, process design in chemical engineering, hydroelectric power plants, sterilization of canned foods, robotics, and thermoelastic plates and shells. The three days of the conference were organized around the three confer ence themes, theory, algorithms, and applications. This book is a collection of the papers presented at the Gainesville conference. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors and participants of the conference, the authors, the referees, and the publisher for making this volume possible.

Book Well Posed Linear Systems

Download or read book Well Posed Linear Systems written by Olof Staffans and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-02-24 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many infinite-dimensional linear systems can be modelled in a Hilbert space setting. Others, such as those dealing with heat transfer or population dynamics, need to be set more generally in Banach spaces. This is the first book dealing with well-posed infinite-dimensional linear systems with an input, a state, and an output in a Hilbert or Banach space setting. It is also the first to describe the class of non-well-posed systems induced by system nodes. The author shows how standard finite-dimensional results from systems theory can be extended to these more general classes of systems, and complements them with new results which have no finite-dimensional counterpart. Much of the material presented is original, and many results have never appeared in book form before. A comprehensive bibliography rounds off this work which will be indispensable to all working in systems theory, operator theory, delay equations and partial differential equations.

Download or read book Non linear Bending of an Annular Plate Ii Integration of Reissner s and Von Karman s Equations written by Vincent G. Hart and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern is with the equilibrium of a thin annular plate bent out of its initial plane by transverse edge forces. The results of integrating the governing non-linear differential equations of Reissner are compared with the results of integrating von Karman's equations for this problem. (Author).

Book Nonlinear Large deflection Boundary value Problems of Rectangular Plates

Download or read book Nonlinear Large deflection Boundary value Problems of Rectangular Plates written by Chi-Teh Wang and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relaxation and successive approximation methods are used to solve Von Karman's equations as applied to initially flat, rectangular plates with large deflections under either normal pressure or combined normal pressure and side thrust, and several specific cases are analyzed. The general method developed may be applied to bending and combined bending and buckling problems with practically any boundary conditions to any required degree of accuracy or applied to solve the membrane theory of the plate which applies when the deflection is very large in comparison with the thickness of the plate.
