The most significant effect arises from the dramatic increase in viscosity of polymer solutions in an extensional flow, such as that generated about a spherical bubble during its growth or collapse phase. In addition, many biological fluids, such as blood, synovial fluid, and saliva, have non-Newtonian properties and can display significant viscoelastic behaviour. This monograph elucidates general aspects of bubble dynamics and cavitation in non-Newtonian fluids and applies them to the fields of biomedicine and bioengineering. In addition it presents many examples from the process industries. The field is strongly interdisciplinary and the numerous disciplines involve have and will continue to overlook and reinvent each others’ work. This book helps researchers to think intuitively about the diverse physics of these systems, to attempt to bridge the various communities involved, and to convey the interest, elegance, and variety of physical phenomena that manifest themselves on the micrometer and microsecond scales.

Book excerpt: The possibility of nondestructively characterizing the microstruc ture, morphology or mechanical properties of materials is certainly a fascinating subject. In principle, such techniques can be used at all stages of a material's life - from the early stages of processing, to the end of a structural component's useful life. Interest in the subject thus arises not only from a purely scientific point of view but is also strongly motivated by economic pressures to improve productivity and quality in manufacturing, to insure the reliability and extend the life of existing structures. The present volume represents the edited papers presented at the Second International Symposium on the Nondestructive Characterization of Materials, held in Montreal, Canada, July 21-23, 1986. The Proceedings are divided into eight sections, which reflect the multidisciplinary nature of characterizing materials nondestructively: Polymers and Composites, Ceramics and Powder Metallurgy, Metals, Layered Structures/Adhesive Bonds/Welding, Degradation/Aging, Texture/ Anisotropy, Stress, and New Techniques. Invited papers by R. Hadcock of Grumman Aircraft Systems, R. Cannon of Rutgers University, H. Yada of Nippon Steel and R. Bridenbaugh of Alcoa review respectively the processing of polymer matrix composites, ceramics, steel and aluminum, emphasizing the need for material property sensors to improve process and quality control. Two other invited papers, one by A. Wedgwood of Harwell and the other by P. Holler of the IzFP in Saarbrucken review state of the art techniques to characterize particulate matter and metals respectively.

Optical methods have a long tradition in heat and mass transfer and in fluid dynamics. Global experimental information is not sufficient for developing constitution equations to describe complicated phenomena in fluid dynamics or in transfer processes by a computer program . Furthermore, a detailed insight with high local and temporal resolution into the thermo-and fluiddynamic situations is necessary. Sets of equations for computer program in thermo dynamics and fluid dynamics usually consist of two types of formulations: a first one derived from the conservation laws for mass, energy and momentum, and a second one mathematically modelling transport processes like laminar or turbulent diffusion. For reliably predicting the heat transfer, for example, the velocity and temperature field in the boundary layer must be known, or a physically realistic and widely valid correlation describing the turbulence must be avail able. For a better understanding of combustion processes it is necessary to know the local concentration and temperature just ahead of the flame and in the ignition zone.

Benefiting from scaling laws, surface tension and capillary effects can enable sensing, actuation, adhesion, confinement, compliance, and other structural and functional properties necessary in micro- and nanosystems. Various applications are under development: microfluidic and lab-on-chip devices, soft gripping and manipulation of particles, colloidal and interfacial assemblies, fluidic/droplet mechatronics. The capillary action is ubiquitous in drops, bubbles and menisci, opening a broad spectrum of technological solutions and scientific investigations. Identified grand challenges to the establishment of fluidic microrobotics include mastering the dynamics of capillary effects, controlling the hysteresis arising from wetting and evaporation, improving the dispensing and handling of tiny droplets, and developing a mechatronic approach for the control and programming of surface tension effects. In this Special Issue of Micromachines, we invite contributions covering all aspects of microscale engineering relying on surface tension. For biosensor applications, the inherent sensitivity of interferometry enables ultrasensitive detection of molecules in biological samples for medical diagnostics. In this book, emphasis is placed on the physics of light scattering, beginning with the molecular origins of refraction as light propagates through matter, and then treating the stochastic nature of random fields that ultimately dominate optical imaging in cells and tissue. The physics of partial coherence plays a central role in the text, with a focus on coherence detection techniques that allow information to be selectively detected out of incoherent and heterogeneous backgrounds. Optical Interferometry for Biology and Medicine is divided into four sections.
