Book Nondestructive Evaluation of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bridges and Decks

Download or read book Nondestructive Evaluation of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bridges and Decks written by William S. Bane and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research described in this report involved both nondestructive evaluation and destructive testing of a fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) honeycomb specimen. The specimen is representative of an FRP bridge that is to be constructed in Troupsburg, New York. The specimen was tested in fatigue at Clarkson University prior to its arrival at Tulane University. The specimen was loaded and unloaded at Tulane University on several different occasions spanning a period of four months. Strain, load, displacement, and acoustic emission were monitored. A finite element model of the specimen was developed and this model was compared to the measured displacement data.

Book Developments in fiber reinforced polymer FRP composites for civil engineering

Download or read book Developments in fiber reinforced polymer FRP composites for civil engineering written by N. Uddin and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The primary objective of this chapter is first to introduce and demonstrate the application of thermoplastic (woven glass reinforced polypropylene) in the design of modular fiber-reinforced bridge decks, and next the development of jackets for confining concrete columns against compression and impact loading. The design concept and manufacturing processes of the thermoplastic bridge deck composite structural system are presented by recognizing the structural demands required to support highway traffic. Then the results of the small-scale static cylinder tests and the impact tests of concrete columns are presented, demonstrating that thermoplastic reinforcement jackets act to restrain the lateral expansion of the concrete that accompanies the onset of crushing, maintaining the integrity of the core concrete, and enabling much higher compression strains (compared to CFRP composite wraps) to be sustained by the compression zone before failure occurs.

Book Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation of Fiber Reinforced Composite Structures

Download or read book Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation of Fiber Reinforced Composite Structures written by Shuncong Zhong and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed description of the most common nondestructive testing(NDT) techniques used for the testing and evaluation fiber-reinforced composite structures, during manufacturing and/or in service stages. In order to facilitate the understanding and the utility of the different NDT techniques presented, the book first provides some information regarding the defects and material degradation mechanisms observed in fiber-reinforced composite structures as well as their general description and most probable causes. It is written based on the extensive scientific research and engineering backgrounds of the authors in the NDT and structural health monitoring (SHM) of structural systems from various areas including electrical, mechanical, materials, civil and biomedical engineering. Pursuing a rigorous approach, the book establishes a fundamental framework for the NDT of fiber-reinforced composite structures, while emphasizing on the importance of technique’s spatial resolution, integrated systems analysis and the significance of the influence stemming from the applicability of the NDT and the physical parameters of the test structures in the selection and utilization of adequate NDT techniques. The book is intended for students who are interested in the NDT of fiber-reinforced composite structures, researchers investigating the applicability of different NDT techniques to the inspections of structural systems, and NDT researchers and engineers working on the optimization of NDT systems for specific applications involving the use of fiber-reinforced composite structures.

Book Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bridge Decks

Download or read book Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bridge Decks written by Judy Liu and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching goal of this study was to perform a comprehensive evaluation of various issues related to the strength and serviceability of the FRP deck panels that are available in the industry. Specific objectives were to establish critical limit states to be considered in the design of FRP deck panel, to provide performance specifications to designers, and to develop evaluation techniques for the deck panels in service. Two different FRP panels were studied during the research project: a sandwich panel and a pultruded panel. The sandwich panel was initially selected for the rehabilitation case study bridge. However, for a variety of reasons outside of the scope of this study, both the sandwich panel and the initial case study bridge were dropped from consideration. A new case study bridge was selected, and new proposals from FRP deck manufacturers were solicited. At that time, the pultruded deck was selected. Analysis and experimental results related to both FRP deck panels are included in this report, as information from both decks is relevant to the overarching goal of this study. In November 2009, Sugar Creek Bridge became the first bridge in Indiana to be rehabilitated with an FRP bridge deck. An extensive study, including literature review, analysis, and load tests, suggest that the installed deck should perform well, with web buckling as the ultimate failure mode at a factor of safety of 5. Deflection limits, generally an issue with FRP decks, are satisfied with the installed deck. Meanwhile, some combination of acoustic emission methods, infrared thermography and a newly developed traveling truck deflection method show promise for non-destructive evaluation of the deck in-situ and identification of damage such as delamination of the wearing surface or web buckling. However, such methods have shown variability and could be prohibitively labor-intensive. Therefore, further evaluation is needed if such methods are to be pursued.

Book Structural Materials Technology

Download or read book Structural Materials Technology written by Sreenivas Alampalli and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-02-29 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth Structural Materials Technology NDT Conference was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with over sixty speakers presenting on a wide variety of topics. The goal of this conference was to inform engineers and researchers of the new nondestructive testing/nondestructive evaluation (NDT/NDE) technologies and techniques available for use in transportation construction. The use of alternative materials is challenging NDT/NDE professionals to develop new methods or modify existing techniques to address quality control, quality assurance, and long-term monitoring of structures built or strengthened with these materials. One such alternative is fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) products. This conference included papers on this topic and a panel discussion that focused on the future of NDT/NDE technologies for structures built or rehabilitated with FRP composites. These proceedings contain the 62 papers that were presented at the conference, arranged according to session number. An author index is included.
