Book excerpt: Gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements have been made on mixed uranium and plutonium oxides in sealed containers to determine the uranium and plutonium enrichment and isotopics. Experimental results obtained using two different methods were in good agreement with the known contents. The first method is applicable to thick samples of freshly reprocessed mixed oxide and determines isotopic abundances from measured absolute gamma-ray intensities. Measurement times depend on plutonium enrichment, but for mixed oxide enriched to 12% in plutonium, the fissionable content can be determined to better than 0.5% in 2 h. The second approach utilizes intensity ratios of selected pairs of gamma-rays to determine plutonium enrichment and uranium and plutonium isotopes. This method requires at least 12 h to determine the plutonium enrichment to an accuracy of 0.5%. However, it cannot be applied until the 238U daughter activities in the mixed oxide reach equilibrium, which requires at least 5 months after separation. Preliminary conclusions drawn from these two noninvasive and nondestructive measurement techniques, and recommendations for future experiments are discussed.

Book excerpt: Isotopic measurements of items stored in shielded shipping containers presents a challenge to standard, nondestructive high-resolution gamma spectroscopy analysis. For example, some plutonium oxide material that will be shipped from Rocky Flats will be packaged in a combination of containers that places more than 12 mm of lead and 25 mm of steel between the material and the detector. This shielding effectively eliminates gamma rays below approximately 300 keV. Spectra were taken through simulated containers and analyzed using FRAM version 4.0 and a parameter set developed for use with highly attenuated items. The results indicate that 10% precision in measured 24°Pu content should be achievable with 2-hour measurements.

The method is applied to the analysis of mixed plutonium-uranium oxide materials but can be applied to low-level mass spectrometry analyses as well. The new method uses a single extraction chromatographic column to separate and purify both uranium and plutonium for isotopic assay by thermal ionization mass spectrometry. A dual uranium/plutonium spike isotope dilution technique is used to allow rapid analysis of uranium/plutonium content and isotopics. A single UTEVA Resin column is utilized to simultaneously separate both uranium and plutonium from the sample matrix. The plutonium and uranium can rapidly removed from the column separately or eluted together for analysis. This new method combines sample preparation into a single, effective separation step that significantly reduces sample preparation time and costs.
