Book Practitioners Guide to Finite Element Modelling of Reinforced Concrete Structures

Download or read book Practitioners Guide to Finite Element Modelling of Reinforced Concrete Structures written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-linear computer analysis methods have seen remarkable advancement in the last half-century. The state-of-the-art in non-linear finite element analysis of reinforced concrete has progressed to the point where such procedures are close to being practical, every-day tools for design office engineers. Non-linear computer analysis procedures can be used to provide reliable assessments of the strength and integrity of damaged or deteriorated structures, or of structures built to previous codes, standards or practices deemed to be deficient today. They can serve as valuable tools in assessing the expected behaviour from retrofitted structures, or in investigating and rationally selecting amongst various repair alternatives. fib Bulletin 45 provides an overview of current concepts and techniques relating to computer-based finite element modelling of structural concrete. It summarises the basic knowledge required for use of nonlinear analysis methods as applied to practical design, construction and maintenance of concrete structures, and attempts to provide a diverse and balanced portrayal of the current technical knowledge, recognizing that there are often competing and conflicting viewpoints. This report does not give advice on picking one model over another but, rather, provides guidance to designers on how to use existing and future models as tools in design practice, in benchmarking of their models against established and reliable test data and in selecting an appropriate safety factor as well as recognising various pitfalls. fib Bulletin 45 is intended for practicing engineers, and therefore focuses more on practical application and less on the subtleties of constitutive modelling.

Book Finite Element Design of Concrete Structures

Download or read book Finite Element Design of Concrete Structures written by Guenter Axel Rombach and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2004 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Finite Element Design of Concrete Structures: practical problems and their solutions the author addresses this blind belief in computer results by offering a useful critique that important details are overlooked due to the flood of information from the output of computer calculations. Indeed, errors in the numerical model may lead in extreme cases to structural failures as the collapse of the so-called Sleipner platform has demonstrated.

Book Additional Finite Element Method for Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Structures at Limit States

Download or read book Additional Finite Element Method for Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Structures at Limit States written by Ermakova A.V. and published by Издательство АСВ. This book was released on 2012 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presents the theoretical basis of Additional Finite Element Method (AFEM), which is a variant of the Finite Element Method (FEM) for analysis of reinforced concrete structures at limit state. AFEM adds to the traditional sequence of problem by FEM the units of the two well-known methods of the structural design: method of additional loads and limit state method. The problem is solved by introduction of ideal failure models and additional design diagrams formed from additional finite elements, where each AFE describes the limit state reached by the main element. The main relations defining the properties of AFEs as well as the examples of the use of Additional Finite Element Method for analysis of reinforced concrete structures at limit state are given in the work too.

Book Nonlinear FEA of Soil structure interaction Effects on RC Shear wall Structures

Download or read book Nonlinear FEA of Soil structure interaction Effects on RC Shear wall Structures written by Dina Saadi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Considering Soil-Structure-Interaction (SSI) is essential when evaluating the structural system’s response as it can unveil behaviors that are otherwise not accounted for in fixed-base (FB) systems. Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis (NFEA) is performed on a six-story Reinforced Concrete (RC) shear wall structure to investigate SSI effects. The soil medium in consideration represents site class E soil type in accordance to ASCE7-10 standards. The structural elements including the RC wall, slabs, foundation, and soil continuum are modeled using 3D solid hexahedral elements. Additionally, to further enhance accuracy to the modeling, all steel reinforcement including longitudinal and transverse rebars are modeled as embedded bars within the brick elements. The smeared crack approach is utilized for optimal computational efficiency. Four types of RC walls that differ in reinforcement detailing for varying seismicity design levels are explored. The representative structures are loaded with their tributary gravity loads applied to the corresponding slabs. Lateral load effects are imposed onto the structures through displacement-controlled monotonic as well as cyclic pseudo-static protocols. The systems’ responses from the SSI and FB systems are compared through pushover and hysteretic curves (lateral force versus lateral drift), strain/stress contours, as well as interpretive response quantities such as characteristic stiffnesses and energy dissipation. It was found that all SSI models exhibit higher lateral displacements ranging from an additional 34% to 85%, lesser force demands within the superstructure by around 10%, and higher levels of energy dissipation (on an average of 25%) due to soil compressibility. Furthermore, all FB models experienced higher strain concentrations at the bottom region of the shear walls. Thus, it was found that wall shear reinforcement can be reduced by accounting for SSI effects. Lastly, the reinforcement detailing (special versus ordinary) had a noticeable effect on enhancing the system’s performance."--Abstract.

Book Non linear Finite Element Analysis and Parametric Investigation of Low rise Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls

Download or read book Non linear Finite Element Analysis and Parametric Investigation of Low rise Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls written by Nasir Navidpour and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A parametric study was carried out on 18 reinforced concrete shear walls to investigate the significance of design parameters on seismic response. The parameters included boundary elements and their reinforcement characteristics, web reinforcement ratios, concrete strength, steel yield strength, and axial load. The investigation was conducted using finite element analyses. Computer program ADINA was used to perform nonlinear analysis of concrete shear walls under axial load and incrementally increasing lateral forces. Material nonlinearities, including those of concrete, were modeled using ADINA material models. Four-node isoparametric plane stress elements were used to model concrete. Steel elements were modeled using two-node nonlinear truss elements. The applicability of the program and the accuracy of finite element models were first validated. This was done by comparing the results of six different shear walls with those obtained experimentally. The walls included three specimens tested by Maier at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland and three shear walls tested by Lefas et al. at Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, England. The analytical and experimental results showed very good agreement. The results of the parametric investigation indicate that the presence of boundary elements enhanced strength and deformability of shear walls significantly. Wall aspect ratio was also found to be an important parameter dictating the mode of behavior. The longitudinal reinforcement ratio in the boundary elements was found to be a good source of energy dissipation and had much greater influence on ultimate load capacity than the web reinforcement. When confinement of concrete was considered, both the ultimate load capacity and ductility of shear walls improved. The effects of increased axial compression and increased reinforcement yield level were to increase strength but reduce ductility.
