Book Non linear Analysis of Reinforced and Pre stressed Concrete Beams

Download or read book Non linear Analysis of Reinforced and Pre stressed Concrete Beams written by Ahmed M. M. Hamed and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinforced/pre-stressed (RC/PC) concrete is one of the most commonly used construction materials. This composite material demonstrates a highly non-linear behaviour caused by, cracking, crushing, agregate interlock, bond slip, dowel action, shrinkage, creep, etc. Because the bahviour of reinforced/pre-stressed concrete invloves so many non-linear phenomena interacting with one other, the formulate of rational analytical procedures to describe this behaviour is very dificult. Since the advent of the computer, powerful methods of analysis such as the finite element method and stiffness matrixmethod have been implemented to study and develop analytical solutions for the non-linear phenomena. However, the succes of such analysis depends on a through understanding and modelling of the composite material behaviour. This study describes the development of a non-linear computer code used to predict the non-linear response of reinforced/pre-stresses concrete beams that are subjected to acombined axial force and bending moment. The study discusses a new simplified approach, whereby the non-linear response is captured via a series of sequentlly linear steps. The finite element approach with the stiffness matrix method were used to model the beam element structure and generate its stiffness matrix. A monotonic empirical model for the concrete's stress-strain curve has been implemented to predict both ascending and descending parts of the curve. An idealized bi-linear elasto-plastic in tension and compression model has been assumed for reinforcing and pre-stressing steel. Concrete and reinforcing/pre-stressing steel are represented by separate algorithms, which when combined together, describe the behaviour of the composite reinforced/pre-stressed concrete material. The newton-Raphson concepts has been implemented in the interaction technique to satisfy equilibrium and compatibility conditions. Finally, correlation studies between analytical and experimental results have been carried out with the objective to establish the validity of the proposed model. The verification of the program started by comparing the predictions of the non-linear response for a reinforced concrete beam with that of the results which have been obtained experimentally, ang by using the finite element method for the same beam. The comparison was made for the failure load, yielding load and load-deflection relation. Further more, a 6.0m reinforced concrete beam has been investigated in detail as a simply supported and as a fixed supported beam, 2.5 m presstressed concrete beam also investigated in details. The comparison study shows that the prediction from the developed program correlate well with other results. The investigated beam show that the program results are in complete agreement with the assumptions and models considered to develop the code. The results clearly showed the magnitude and locations of cracking, yielding, ultimate load, failure load and ductility requirements. The program may be used as a tool to do parametric study on the behaviour of reinforced and prestressed concrete stuctures.

Book Nonlinear Time dependent Analysis of Externally internally Prestressed Reinforced Concrete Beams

Download or read book Nonlinear Time dependent Analysis of Externally internally Prestressed Reinforced Concrete Beams written by Bilal M. El-Ariss and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple procedure for the nonlinear analysis of externally and/or internally prestressed reinforced concrete beams including the time-dependent effects caused by creep and shrinkage of concrete and relaxation of prestressing steel is presented. The procedure is capable of tracing the structural response of these structures through their service load history as well as throughout the elastic, inelastic, and ultimate load ranges. Sections can change throughout the length of the member and the variation of the material properties within the element is accommodated. The section is divided into concrete parts of different materials and the reinforcement steel is divided into layers of different properties. Each concrete part and steel layer is considered in a uniaxial state of stress. Time dependent variation of concrete properties is considered. The instantaneous loss in the prestressing force due to friction and anchor setting in posttensioned structures is also recognized. The time domain for which the analysis is required is divided into a number of time intervals. At any instant, the instantaneous changes in stresses and deformations are calculated and added to the existing values. For any time interval, the gradual change in stresses and deformations are determined and added to update the existing values. Also for each time interval, nonlinear equilibrium equations which are valid for the current material properties are set up and solved using the displacement method. An initial stiffness method combined with the unbalanced load iterations for each load increment or time interval is used for the nonlinear equilibrium. A series of numerical examples are tested and comparisons are made with other analytical and experimental data. Numerical data from the nonlinear and time-dependent analyses of prestressed posttensioned reinforced concrete simple beams are presented.

Book Partial Prestressing From Theory to Practice

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes contain the edited documents presented at the NATO-Sponsored Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on Partial Pre8tre88ing, from Theory to Practice, held at the CEBTP Research Centre of Saint-Remy-Ies-Chevreuse, France, June 18-22, 1984. The workshop was a direct extension of the International Symposium on Nonlinearity and Continuity in Pre8tre88ed Concrete, organized by the editor at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada, July 4-6, 1983. The organization of the NATO-ARW on Partial Prestressing was prompted by the need to explain and reduce the wide dirrerences of expert oph:iipn· on the subject, which make more difficult the accep tance of partial prestressing by the profession at large. Specifically, the workshop attempted to: - produce a more unified picture of partial presetressing, by con fronting and, where possible, reconciling some conflicting American and European views on this subject; - bring theoretical advances on partial prestressing within the grasp of engineering practice; - provide the required background for developing some guidelines on the use of partial prestressing, in agreement with existing structural concrete standards. The five themes selected for the workshop agenda were: (1) Problems of Partially Prestressed Concrete (PPC). (2) Partially Prestressed Concrete Members: Static Loading. (3) PPC Members: Repeated and Dynamic Loadings. (4) Continuity in Partially Prestressed Concrete. (5) Practice of Partial Prestressing.
