Book excerpt: A co-publication of the AMS and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University This book is a concise and self-contained introduction of recent techniques to prove local spectral universality for large random matrices. Random matrix theory is a fast expanding research area, and this book mainly focuses on the methods that the authors participated in developing over the past few years. Many other interesting topics are not included, and neither are several new developments within the framework of these methods. The authors have chosen instead to present key concepts that they believe are the core of these methods and should be relevant for future applications. They keep technicalities to a minimum to make the book accessible to graduate students. With this in mind, they include in this book the basic notions and tools for high-dimensional analysis, such as large deviation, entropy, Dirichlet form, and the logarithmic Sobolev inequality. This manuscript has been developed and continuously improved over the last five years. The authors have taught this material in several regular graduate courses at Harvard, Munich, and Vienna, in addition to various summer schools and short courses. Titles in this series are co-published with the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University.

This book collects and compares current results OCo mostly strong theorems which describe the properties of a random walk. The modern problems of the limit theorems of probability theory are treated in the simple case of coin tossing. Taking advantage of this simplicity, the reader is familiarized with limit theorems (especially strong ones) without the burden of technical tools and difficulties. An easy way of considering the Wiener process is also given, through the study of the random walk.Since the first and second editions were published in 1990 and 2005, a number of new results have appeared in the literature. The first two editions contained many unsolved problems and conjectures which have since been settled; this third, revised and enlarged edition includes those new results. In this edition, a completely new part is included concerning Simple Random Walks on Graphs. Properties of random walks on several concrete graphs have been studied in the last decade. Some of the obtained results are also presented.

Book excerpt: ​Random Matrices are one of the major research areas in modern probability theory, due to their prominence in many different fields such as nuclear physics, statistics, telecommunication, free probability, non-commutative geometry, and dynamical systems. A great deal of recent work has focused on the study of spectra of large random matrices on the one hand and on iterated random functions, especially random difference equations, on the other. However, the methods applied in these two research areas are fairly dissimilar. Motivated by the idea that tools from one area could potentially also be helpful in the other, the volume editors have selected contributions that present results and methods from random matrix theory as well as from the theory of iterated random functions. This work resulted from a workshop that was held in Münster, Germany in 2011. The aim of the workshop was to bring together researchers from two fields of probability theory: random matrix theory and the theory of iterated random functions. Random matrices play fundamental, yet very different roles in the two fields. Accordingly, leading figures and young researchers gave talks on their field of interest that were also accessible to a broad audience.

More specifically, we consider matrices of the type A+P, where the rank of P stays bounded as the dimension goes to infinity and where the matrix A is a non Hermitian random matrix. We first prove that if P has some eigenvalues outside the bulk, then A+P has some eigenvalues (called outliers) away from the bulk. Then, we study the fluctuations of the outliers of A around their limit and prove that they are distributed as the eigenvalues of some finite dimensional random matrices. Such facts had already been noticed for Hermitian models. More surprising facts are that outliers can here have very various rates of convergence to their limits (depending on the Jordan Canonical Form of P) and that some correlations can appear between outliers at a macroscopic distance from each other. The first non Hermitian model studied comes from the Single Ring Theorem due to Guionnet, Krishnapur and Zeitouni. Then we investigated spiked models for nearly Hermitian random matrices : where A is Hermitian but P isn't. At last, we studied the outliers of Gaussian Elliptic random matrices. This thesis also investigates the convergence in distribution of random variables of the type Tr( f (A)M) where A is a matrix from the Single Ring Theorem and f is analytic on a neighborhood of the bulk and the Frobenius norm of M has order √N. As corollaries, we obtain central limit theorems for linear spectral statistics of A (for analytic test functions) and for finite rank projections of f (A) (like matrix entries).

" These include: harmonic measure, which can be considered as a problem of nonintersection of a random walk with a fixed set; the probability that the paths of independent random walks do not intersect; and self-avoiding walks, i. e. , random walks which have no self-intersections. The prerequisite is a standard measure theoretic course in probability including martingales and Brownian motion. The first chapter develops the facts about simple random walk that will be needed. The discussion is self-contained although some previous expo sure to random walks would be helpful. Many of the results are standard, and I have made borrowed from a number of sources, especially the ex cellent book of Spitzer [65]. For the sake of simplicity I have restricted the discussion to simple random walk. Of course, many of the results hold equally well for more general walks. For example, the local central limit theorem can be proved for any random walk whose increments have mean zero and finite variance. Some of the later results, especially in Section 1. 7, have not been proved for very general classes of walks. The proofs here rely heavily on the fact that the increments of simple random walk are bounded and symmetric.

The overarching goal is to extend some well-known results for matrices with independent and identically distributed (iid) entries to random matrices whose entries are either dependent or non-identically distributed. Particular attention is given to the adjacency matrix of a random regular digraph. Making use of the method of exchangeable pairs, we establish concentration bounds for codegrees and edge densities of induced subgraphs of a random regular digraph. We apply these bounds along with other coupling techniques to prove that the associated adjacency matrix is invertible with high probability, assuming a mild growth condition on the degree of the graph. We next prove lower tail estimates for the smallest singular value of matrices with independent but non-identically distributed entries, including matrices with most entries set to zero deterministically. In particular, we show that for small diagonal perturbations of centered random matrices with independent entries of bounded variance, the smallest singular value is of inverse-polynomial order with high probability. Finally, we prove that the circular law holds for a random matrix obtained from the adjacency matrix of a dense random regular digraph by multiplying each entry by a random sign.
