Book Condition Monitoring Techniques for Wind Turbines

Download or read book Condition Monitoring Techniques for Wind Turbines written by Christopher James Crabtree and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on practical condition monitoring of wind turbines. With offshore wind playing an increasing part in UK electricity generation, prompt fault detection leading to preventative maintenance is gaining in importance. This work describes the development of a condition monitoring test rig and the innovation and application of signal processing techniques for the detection of faults in non-stationary signals. Work is supported throughout by information from wind turbine operators and their experiences of variable speed, variable load wind turbines in the field. Experimental work is carried out on a condition monitoring test rig comprising a wound rotor induction generator, gearbox and DC driving motor. The test rig operates at variable speed and allows the implementation of a number of fault-like conditions including rotor electrical asymmetry, shaft mass unbalance and gear tooth failure. Test rig instrumentation was significantly developed during this research and both electrical and mechanical condition signals are monitored. A signal processing algorithm was developed based on experience with analysis techniques and their relationship with the characteristics of a wind turbine. The algorithm is based on Fourier analysis and allows the analysis of fault-related speed-dependent frequencies within non-stationary signals such as those encountered on a wind turbine. The detection of different faults is discussed and conclusions drawn on the applicability of frequency tracking algorithms. The newly developed algorithm is compared with a published method to establish its advantages and limitations.

Book Wind Energy Conversion 1991

Download or read book Wind Energy Conversion 1991 written by British Wind Energy Association. Conference and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1991-09-02 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having sited the conference where, even in July, they had a good chance of being able to test theories on a moment's notice, contributors from a wide range of disciplines consider not only the economic and engineering parameters of wind energy, but also the contentious issues of noise, visual impact, and aesthetics that have often accompanied the implementation or attempted implementation of wind farms in economically and politically marginalized regions of Britain. One of the three keynote addresses holds an olive branch to environmentalists. The other 45 papers cover overviews and perspectives, windfarm design and construction, power quality, wind turbine philosophies, autonomous systems, standards, design methods, technical tools, components, planning, visual and aesthetic considerations, noise issues, non-UK markets financing and economics, market and industrial opportunities in the UK, and integrating wind energy into the grid. Book Recent Trends in the Condition Monitoring of Transformers

Download or read book Recent Trends in the Condition Monitoring of Transformers written by Sivaji Chakravorti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Trends in the Condition Monitoring of Transformers reflects the current interest in replacing traditional techniques used in power transformer condition monitoring with non-invasive measures such as polarization/depolarization current measurement, recovery voltage measurement, frequency domain spectroscopy and frequency response analysis. The book stresses the importance of scrutinizing the condition of transformer insulation which may fail under present day conditions of intensive use with the resulting degradation of dielectric properties causing functional failure of the transformer. The text shows the reader how to overcome the key challenges facing today’s maintenance policies, namely: The selection of appropriate techniques for dealing with each type of failure process accounting for the needs of plant owners, plant users and wider society; and Cost-efficiency and durability of effect. Many of the failure-management methods presented rely on the fact that most failures give warning when they are imminent. These potential failures give rise to identifiable physical conditions and the novel approaches described detect them so that action can be taken to avoid degeneration into full-blown functional failure. This “on-condition” maintenance means that equipment can be left in service as long as a specified set of performance standards continue to be met, avoiding the costly downtime imposed by routine and perhaps unnecessary maintenance but without risking equally expensive failure. Recent Trends in the Condition Monitoring of Transformers will be of considerable interest to both academic researchers in power systems and to engineers working in the power generation and distribution industry showing how new and more efficient methods of fault diagnosis and condition management can increase transformer efficiency and cut costs.

Book Vibration based Condition Monitoring of Wind Turbines

Download or read book Vibration based Condition Monitoring of Wind Turbines written by Tomasz Barszcz and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes in detail different types of vibration signals and the signal processing methods, including signal resampling and signal envelope, used for condition monitoring of drivetrains. A special emphasis is placed on wind turbines and on the fact that they work in highly varying operational conditions. The core of the book is devoted to cutting-edge methods used to validate and process vibration data in these conditions. Key case studies, where advanced signal processing methods are used to detect failures of gearboxes and bearings of wind turbines, are described and discussed in detail. Vibration sensors, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), portable data analyzers and online condition monitoring systems, are also covered. This book offers a timely guide to both researchers and professionals working with wind turbines (but also other machines), and to graduate students willing to extend their knowledge in the field of vibration analysis.
