Download or read book Abrahamic Blessing written by Sarita D. Gallagher and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the Abrahamic blessing of Genesis 12:1-3 still active in the world today? Does God still extend his blessing to the nations through his people? The author found the answer to these questions in one of the most isolated regions of the world, Papua New Guinea. In this book Sarita D. Gallagher compares the missional nature of the Abrahamic blessing motif in Scripture to a national revival that took place in Papua New Guinea. By identifying the shared missional patterns, she illustrates the continued fulfillment of the Abrahamic blessing through the Old and New Testaments and the contemporary Papua New Guinean Church. The significance of this research is multifaceted: the text contributes new insights to the global Church's understanding of the missio Dei, records an unexplored chapter of Melanesian indigenous mission history, and impacts the foundational motivations and methodology of contemporary mission praxis.

Download or read book Melanesians and Missionaries written by Darrell L. Whiteman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2002-05-10 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'In Melanesians and Missionaries', one of the best of the younger generation of missionary anthropologists demonstrates that a commitment to the missionary enterprise on the part of a solid scholar facilitates, rather than hinders, the anthropological study of a missionary topic. This is better anthropology because Dr. Whiteman is able to probe more deeply into his topic and demonstrates that he understands and appreciates both Melanesians and missionaries. Charles H. Kraft, Professor of Anthropology, School of World Mission, Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena
Download or read book Genealogies for the Present in Cultural Anthropology written by Bruce M. Knauft and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of tensions between modern and postmodern sensibilities, what larger directions now emerge in cultural anthropology? In this major work, Bruce Knauft takes stock of important recent initiatives in cultural and critical theory. By combining critical reviews and ethnographic engagements with fresh readings of major figures and approaches, the work develops a larger vantage point for considering the dispersing influence of practice theories, postmodernism, cultural studies, postcolonial studies, modern/post-positive feminism, and multicultural criticisms.
Download or read book Art and Creativity in a New Guinea Society written by Ross Bowden and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-07-26 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kwoma, the subject of this book, are one of a number of peoples in the Sepik River region of northern Papua New Guinea who have created some of the most distinctive visual art in the Pacific. Through case studies of their painting, sculpture, architecture and ritual this book examines in detail how people in this society understand their art as a cultural phenomenon. This includes how they understand its origins in the spirit world, how they judge quality in art and how they understand artistic creativity. The book contrasts Kwoma beliefs with the radically different approach to art found in the modern West. The modern Western concept of art first emerged not in the eighteenth century in the Enlightenment, or even later, as anthropologists and art historians often assume, but several centuries earlier in the Renaissance. The book gives an account of radical changes that took place culturally in Europe between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries in the way human intellectual creativity was understood, and how this gave rise to a new concept of art, one that remains unchanged in the modern West today.
Download or read book Cultural Relativism and Philosophy written by Dascal and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite, or perhaps because of, the ongoing cultural, economic, and political uniformization of the world, relativism has risen to the top of the agenda of philosophy and other disciplines. To what extent does cultural diversity affect the activity and the products of philosophizing and of social science? Can there be convergence of worldviews and conceptual frameworks across cultural boundaries? Can there be mutual understanding across them in spite of diversity? These and other questions prompted by the recent upsurge of relativism are tackled in original essays by philosophers and social scientists. The special focus and interest of the book lies in its attempt to confront North and Latin American perspectives on these issues. The four parts of the book (Relativism: transformation or death? A glimpse of variety: Philosophical experiences and worldviews in Latin America; Nature, Culture and Art; and Crossing conceptual frameworks) discuss different, though intertwined, aspects of the challenge of relativism.
