Book excerpt: In Room for Love by Andrea Meyer, Jacquie Stuart has just turned thirty-two and she wants to do a major rewrite on her life. Her salary at a snarky film magazine barely covers her mortgage, her bratty sister has staked permanent claim to her couch, her best friend is in an obscenely happy marriage, and the only guy who really gets her is gay. Worst of all, she keeps falling for broke, self-involved commitment-phobes. Needing moonlighting money, Jacquie gets the idea of investigating a new dating trend—looking for Mr. Right in the "Roommate Wanted" ads. After a bunch of colorful near-misses that bring her into the slums of the East Village, the brownstones of Brooklyn, and the dingier digs of the Upper East Side, Jacquie thinks she's finally found the man she's been looking for and stuns her friends by moving out of her beloved apartment—and into his. Complications ensue when her live-in love reveals some alarming imperfections, the irresistible artist who dumped her wants her back... and what is up with the mystery man living in the charming one-bedroom she left behind? Jacquie has been looking for love in other people's homes all over town, but could the key to her happiness lie right under her very own roof?

Book excerpt: No Room For Love is a play for five men and four women. Dr Garfield arrives at the somewhat seedy Lawns Hotel in the hope of spending an enjoyable, if discreet, visit with his attractive receptionist, Michele. Unfortunately, however, his wife is the harpist in an orchestra also visiting the hotel, which makes his excuse of a golfing excursion difficult to sustain. In addition, the hotel's poor system of room registration results in a hectic evening for the Garfields, Michele, a young newly-wed couple, a horn player and his alcoholic wife, who find themselves in and out of the bridal suite (and the bridal bed) and other rooms, in a wild confusion of mistaken identities, furious confrontations, and hectic misunderstanding, further complicated by a perfume-obsessed manager, a belligerent porter and assorted musical instruments.

Book When Love Is Not Enough

Download or read book When Love Is Not Enough written by Donna Piazza, PHD and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Love Is Not Enough relates how a multitude of factors--the competence of staff; the safety, nurturing, and protective elements of the emotional, physical, and political setting; and all overt and covert organizational dynamics--determine whether or not a treatment setting accomplishes its therapeutic aims. Authors in When Love Is Not Enough continue the emphasis on the group-as-a-whole “Group Relation” model of organizational and group processes begun with Wilfred Bion’s work at the Tavistok Clinic in London in the 1940s. This model helps those providing services to children and adolescents evaluate their treatment programs and make the necessary changes toward improvement. Chapters in When Love Is Not Enough are dedicated to improving the psychological treatment of children and adolescents in postmodern society, a society in which life in interdependent communities is becoming increasingly important for the health and survival of all persons. Topics covered include: the Tavistok approach to understanding group and organizational behavior the emphasis on group-as-a-whole in problem solving and treatment design narrowing the gap between plan and outcome the dynamics involved in the psychiatric treatment of children issues of staff selection, training, and development in programs designed to treat children countertransference responses in the treatment of children and adolescents revitalizing organizations the subjective experience of school life When Love Is Not Enough helps organizations realize the ways in which they may, inadvertently, undermine the emotional and cognitive functioning of the staff or the identified patients and set serious limits on the growth of members of the organization, staff and patients alike. It urges organizations to conduct an ongoing self-scrutiny concerning their rational and irrational processes, as this self-examination is crucial to the health and vitality of the treatment offered to others. The book also promotes thinking of the conscious and unconscious dynamics of the group-as-a-whole to more completely inform organizational decisions concerning changes that may enhance the treatment of children and adolescents. When Love Is Not Enough serves as an invaluable guide for mental health professionals who treat children and adolescents, group therapists, hospital and clinic administrators, psychoanalysts, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists.

Book excerpt: The Bhagawan Uvacha series brings to devotees the world over, a compilation of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's teachings in the form of quotations, skilfully compiled and woven together by Shri. N. S. Venkatesh, the compiler. In this book in the series, Only Love, Shri. Venkatesh says, "Love is a very special word. Much spoken of and sadly much misunderstood. Bhagawan speaks of love through images... a sandalwood tree that gives fragrance to the axe that chops it down, a mother whose life holds no value before the life of her little one. Love is all about selfless living, holding nothing back, and giving oneself away completely. How are we to comprehend this divine trait that proverbially ‘makes the world go round’? If love could speak, what would it say? Listen to Bhagawan, love personified, as He speaks in the next few pages..."

Book Love Makes Room

Download or read book Love Makes Room written by FRENES and published by Augsburg Fortress Publishers. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Christian singer and speaker Staci Frenes learned her teenage daughter was gay, she found her dreams for the future--along with her lifelong faith--collapsing around her. Coming to terms with a new reality was a challenge--and an invitation--to make room for many things along the way: the inevitability of uncertainty, hope in the midst of loss, awkward and tough conversations, an expanding faith, and a greater understanding of how people are more the same than different. In Love Makes Room, Frenes helps readers see that a reimagined future may look different than our old hoped-for pictures of ourselves and our families, but it can also be wider, deeper, and more fulfilling than we ever dreamed.

Book The Poverty of Eros in Plato s Symposium

Download or read book The Poverty of Eros in Plato s Symposium written by Lorelle D. Lamascus and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poverty of Eros in Plato's Symposium offers an innovative new approach towards Eros and the concept of Eros in the Symposium. Lorelle D. Lamascus argues that Plato's depiction of Eros as the child of Poverty (penia) and Resource (poros) is central to understanding the nature of love. Eros is traditionally seen as self-interested or acquisitive, but this book argues instead that Eros and reason are properly in accord with one another. The moral life and the philosophical life alike depend upon properly trained and directed Eros. Lamascus demonstrates that the presentation of the nature of Poverty is essential to the nature of Eros in the Symposium, doing this through in-depth discussion of the major twentieth century interpretations of Platonic Eros. The book shows that poverty provides an appropriate directing of Eros towards eternal and unchanging goods (and away from an age geared towards material items and wealth), and thus that Plato's mythical treatment of Eros in the Symposium lays the groundwork for understanding the soul's embrace of poverty as a way of living, loving, and knowing.
