Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold and persuasive case for abandoning old religions and still believing in God In this book, Mark Johnston argues that God needs to be saved not only from the distortions of the "undergraduate atheists" (Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris) but, more importantly, from the idolatrous tendencies of religion itself. Each monotheistic religion has its characteristic ways of domesticating True Divinity, of taming God's demands so that they do not radically threaten our self-love and false righteousness. Turning the monotheistic critique of idolatry on the monotheisms themselves, Johnston shows that much in these traditions must be condemned as false and spiritually debilitating. A central claim of the book is that supernaturalism is idolatry. If this is right, everything changes; we cannot place our salvation in jeopardy by tying it essentially to the supernatural cosmologies of the ancient Near East. Remarkably, Johnston rehabilitates the ideas of the Fall and of salvation within a naturalistic framework; he then presents a conception of God that both resists idolatry and is wholly consistent with the deliverances of the natural sciences. Princeton University Press is publishing Saving God in conjunction with Johnston's forthcoming book Surviving Death, which takes up the crux of supernaturalist belief, namely, the belief in life after death. Book Idolatry

Book excerpt: “You shall have no other gods besides Me.” This injunction, handed down through Moses three thousand years ago, marks one of the most decisive shifts in Western culture: away from polytheism toward monotheism. Despite the momentous implications of such a turn, the role of idolatry in giving it direction and impetus is little understood. This book examines the meaning and nature of idolatry—and, in doing so, reveals much about the monotheistic tradition that defines itself against this sin.The authors consider Christianity and Islam, but focus primarily on Judaism. They explore competing claims about the concept of idolatry that emerges in the Hebrew Bible as a “whoring after false gods.” Does such a description, grounded in an analogy of sexual relations, presuppose the actual existence of other gods with whom someone might sin? Or are false gods the product of “men’s hands,” simply a matter of misguided belief? The authors show how this debate, over idolatry as practice or error, has taken shape and has in turn shaped the course of Western thought—from the differentiation between Jewish and Christian conceptions of God to the distinctions between true and false belief that inform the tradition of religious enlightenment.Ranging with authority from the Talmud to Maimonides, from Marx to Nietzsche and on to G.E. Moore, this brilliant account of a subject central to our culture also has much to say about metaphor, myth, and the application of philosophical analysis to religious concepts and sensibilities. Its insights into pluralism and intolerance, into the logic and illogic of the arguments religions aim at each other, make Idolatry especially timely and valuable in these days of dark and implacable religious difference.

Book excerpt: The human fascination with images, and the idolatry or idolization of images as the source of desire, passion and terror, is treated in this book. The first part enters more deeply into religious idolatry, past and present. It treats the biblical, the early-Jewish as well as the Christian views on monotheism and the prohibition against images, as source of authentic humanism or as source of intolerance and violence. In the second part, the focus shifts onto a number of contemporary, profane idols and gods: the nationalist fascination for one's own land and people, and the fear or hate towards foreigners; the rampant preoccupation with (genetic) health, in a context of body culture and aestheticization, of which the postmodern sport idols have become the great 'icons'; the current image- and screen-culture and all forms of audiovisual exorcisms; and last but not least the ongoing process of economization and globalization, with an expanding culture of 'branding' logos.

Book excerpt: There’s a deadly truth behind our nation’s famine. After reading this book, you will understand the deadly grip of sin and its destructive nature for your personal life and community. You will learn how you can repent and seek God for a spiritual awakening in our nation. Sin stops the rain. Moses predicted it at Mount Sinai. Solomon prayed about it at the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem. Israel experienced it under the disastrous reign of Ahab and Jezebel. The sin that particularly plagued ancient Israel was idolatry. The drought they experienced was more than just a lack of water. Amos 8:11 says, “The time is coming, says the Lord God, when I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.” Here in America, the megadrought that has gripped much of the West and portions of the heartland has made headlines. The Mississippi River was so low that barges were getting stuck on the bottom. Lake Mead has been at historically low levels. The Great Salt Lake in Utah is disappearing. Negotiations for allocations of water from the Colorado River are becoming more and more contentious. Could it be that these conditions are only harbingers of a more systemic and serious spiritual famine? Sin stops the rain. In Idolatry in America, Dr. Rod Parsley identifies ten major areas of idolatry that have overtaken our country’s culture. Any one of them is deadly, but together they constitute an unprecedented threat to the very existence of our nation. There is a cure for this cultural epidemic—a way to walk back from the brink of moral and spiritual disaster. The choice is stark. The consequences are severe. The outcome will be stunning.

Book No Gods But God

  • Author : Dennis Newkirk
  • Publisher : Cross Books Pub
  • Release : 2012-11
  • ISBN : 9781462722228
  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book No Gods But God written by Dennis Newkirk and published by Cross Books Pub. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is it that so many of us settle for a less-than-satisfying Christian life? We suffer the symptoms—spiritual dryness, dissatisfaction, and unanswered prayers—of a yet-unidentified problem that creates an obstacle between God and us. We seem unable to connect the dots between our symptoms and the problem causing them: God is no longer first in our hearts. Pastor Dennis Newkirk tells the story of how God showed their church what their problem was—God was no longer first in their hearts. Newkirk brings experience and a pastor’s heart as he teaches us about the dangers of modern-day idolatry. But he also offers hope by showing us how to deal with our idols and the reward of doing so. The four-step pattern God uses to call hearts back to him isn’t some cookie-cutter approach, but seeing the steps spelled out can help Christians recognize how God might be applying them in his or her life. Examining our own lives before God and admitting that our hearts have strayed isn’t easy, and it is most certainly humbling. But that’s what God wants—a humbled, repentant person standing before Him and willing to be used in service for Him. For the sincere Christian who wants an answer to the question “Is there more to the Christian life?” No gods but God will provide an answer.

Book Idolatry of Blood

  • Publisher : Trafford Publishing

Download or read book Idolatry of Blood written by Frédéric Zürcher and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-21 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preponderance and influences of religions in our world need not be established. Religions are largely represented in two categories of fundamental beliefs regarding the deity: those who claim monotheism and polytheists. If there is a single common thread between all religions, it is that they are all founded on at least some elements of beliefs that defy logic. Those unexplainable beliefs are accepted as faith by their devotees. If this observation is correct, one has to reflect on a few basic questions. If intelligent supernatural forces created humans, they are also the creators of logic. This suggests that the religions of our world should not be short on logic, but a simple analysis of their beliefs appear to show otherwise. The same could be said of the monotheist God; why does he expect a persons faith to be founded on elements lacking sound logic? The author answers the question in a rather surprising way. The lack of logic is only due to human interference in the affairs of God. The divine system designed to regenerate love originally created in the human heart has been corrupted beyond recognition. This book is a search for Gods rational plan of action to help humans grow true love in their hearts.

This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light of Truth in the Mind of Man, the Only Rule of Faith and Practice: With Some Observations Upon the Formality and Idolatry of Religious Sects In treating upon the idolatry of sects, I have as sumed, that men are not made better by a profos sion of religion, but by purity of heart; and that there is no essential difference, in the idolatry which in different countries makes religion consist in different outward ceremonies; which in one looks to a pagoda, a temple or a mosque; in others to a chapel, a church, or a meeting house; either as houses of God or places of worship. And singul as it may appear, it does seem to be the fact, that the pure doctrine of the spiritual religion of Jesus Christ, has been most clearly and publicly recog nized among the Chinese and our American natives, living half the circumference of the globe from each other, and equally remote from the principal pro fessing christians of the world. Book Fire on the Mountain Addressing Idolatry

Download or read book Fire on the Mountain Addressing Idolatry written by Riaan Engelbrecht and published by Riaan Engelbrecht. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a fire on the mountain. It is a wildfire of apostasy tearing through the church, fuelled by idolatry. It is because of the winds of false doctrine that this wildfire keeps spreading, and it has been causing massive damage for hundreds of years to the church. Yet the fire is not being checked, addressed, or effectively extinguished by believers. The fire of apostasy has been receiving plenty of fuel for the last 1800 or so years to be a raging inferno. Yes, there is a profane fire burning on the altars build on the spiritual high places. An increasing level of idolatry and spiritual apostasy plagues the world and the church. The fire of idolatry has swept through churches for a long time, consuming and destroying. It is the profane fire. An unholy fire. Who shall contain the fire? It is time for the church to earnestly address idolatry in her midst, for idolatry is an abomination in the eyes of God. God alone shall be worshipped. He should be our highest devotion and our heart’s desire above all. Idolatry is not a trivial matter, as Israel discovered. God is calling for concerted and real action from the church to address idolatry, for our God is a jealous God, and He is an all-consuming fire. He must be our First Love, nothing else, and certainly no one else, including the self.

Book No Idols

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas E. Crow
  • Publisher : Power Publications, Sydney
  • Release : 2017
  • ISBN : 9780909952990
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book No Idols written by Thomas E. Crow and published by Power Publications, Sydney. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in the new Power Polemics series, Thomas Crow's No Idols: The Missing Theology of Art turns away from contemporary cultural theories to face a pervading blindspot in today's art-historical inquiry: religion. Crow pursues a perhaps unpopular notion of Christianity's continued presence in modern abstract art and in the process makes a case for art's own terrain of theology: one that eschews idolatry by means of abstraction. Tracking the original anti-idolatry controversy of the Jansenists, anchored in a humble still life by Chardin, No Idols sets the scene for the development of an art of reflection rather than representation, and divinity without doctrine. Crow's reinstatement of the metaphysical is made through the work of New Zealand artist Colin McCahon and American artists Mark Rothko, Robert Smithson, James Turrell, and Sister Mary Corita Kent. While a tightly selected group of artists, in their collective statute the author explores the proposal that spiritual art, as opposed to "a simulacrum of one," is conceivable for our own time.

Book True Worship and the Consequences of Idolatry

Download or read book True Worship and the Consequences of Idolatry written by John Knox and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2018-04-13 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you know the difference between true and false worship? Can false worship be true worship? Is God honored by false worship even when you are sincere in giving it? Knox defines idolatry as, “all worshipping, honoring, or service invented by the brain of man in the religion of God, without his own express commandment.” Are you an idolater? As much as this might be a hard question to consider, it is an appropriate question in light of God’s directives in Scripture to regard him as holy in corporate worship. In considering the sin of idolatry, whether directly worshipping sticks, stones and idols, or being part of a deviant worship service in a 21st century church, such thoughts on worship are exceedingly relevant for us today. Without coming to God as God requires, we do not worship God as he has instructed us in scripture. Knox’s treatise on True and False Worship demonstrates the inescapable consequence to consider whether you are worshipping God in the vanity of your own mind, being directed by the dictates of another aberrant mind, or, whether you are engaging in true worship as God requires. Considering this is not a vain thing, for as God says to Moses, “For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life,” (Deut. 32:47). Professing Christians must consider that it is God alone who determines the manner in which sinners approach him. On this, and this alone, they are to tender up to God his due. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book God of All Things

Download or read book God of All Things written by Andrew Wilson and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract theology is overrated, for God can be found in even the most ordinary of things. Jesus used things like a lily, sparrow, and sheep to teach about the kingdom of God. And in the Old Testament, God repeatedly describes himself and his saving work in relation to physical things such as a rock, horn, or eagle. In God of All Things, pastor and author Andrew Wilson invites you to rediscover God in this way, too--through ordinary, everyday things. He explores the idea of a material world and presents a variety of created marvels that reveal the gospel in everyday life and fuel worship and joy in God--marvels like: Dust: the image of God Horns: the salvation of God Donkeys: the peace of God Water: the life of God Viruses: the problem of God Cities: the kingdom of God God of All Things will leave you with a deeper understanding of Scripture, the world you live in, and the God who made it all.
