Book No One in New Orleans Will Die

Download or read book No One in New Orleans Will Die written by JS Greene and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-03-26 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No One in New Orleans Will Die is a postmodern take regarding random conspiracy theories, and interpersonal and cultural relationships between citizens and New Orleans in the years following Katrina. As seen through the characters’ dialogue, living amongst devastation and slow progress produces an environment conducive to ‘living in limbo’ for the citizens of New Orleans. It gives a haunting, romantic, intimate look into the different population sample of current New Orleanians. A remarried, widowed ex-advertisement executive turned construction worker who is haunted by his wife’s death, a mediocre jazz singer and musician, a disillusioned ex-banker turned grief counselor are the main characters in the story. Social analysis of New Orleans and the current trends and problems are resonated in the book through the characters and their relationships. Discussions and observations of locals, land marks, visits to the destroyed and reconstructed neighborhoods have and still are being conducted by the author, J.S. Greene. The goal is to recreate the culture and promise of New Orleans while keeping abreast of the reconstructing process with the utmost integrity. The intended audience is the collegiate crowd and older, as well as people with a conscious of New Orleans’s past, present, and future and its romantic quality.

Book Grace King of New Orleans

Download or read book Grace King of New Orleans written by Grace King and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not as well-known as some of her contemporaries—Mark Twain, George W. Cable, and Joel Chandler Harris, to name a few—author and historian Grace King (1851–1932) was nonetheless highly praised in her own right. She garnered attention from such eminent critics as William Dean Howells, and her work frequently appeared in Harper’s and Century Magazine. She published thirteen volumes of fiction, history, biography, and memoir. What contributed to King’s critical acclaim, and her continued importance across time, was the panoramic view of social and historical New Orleans that she captured in her writing. She was, scholar Robert Bush argues, one of the most talented and perceptive citizens of New Orleans during the post–Civil War period. In pursuing an intellectual career, King broke with many Old South traditions. She embraced Anglo-Saxon and Creole French cultures. Much of her work is especially interesting for the way in which her view of the southern temper and cultural contribution supplemented that of other writers of the period. In his introduction, Bush analyzes the breadth of King’s work, leading the reader on a biographical journey that clearly establishes King as an important symbol of a bygone era. He then offers selections that cover the full range of her writing: chapters from her autobiography, Memories of a Southern Woman of Letters; her major short fiction, including five uncollected stories and the best of her Balcony Stories; a large portion of The Pleasant Ways of St. Médard, a novel about life during Reconstruction; sections from her historical writings, including New Orleans: The Place and the People; a series of biographical sketches of Mark Twain and others; excerpts from her notebooks; and a group of more than twenty letters. Grace King of New Orleans offers readers a nuanced understanding of King’s impressions of the people and places of New Orleans as well as southern life and culture.

Book What Happens Next

Download or read book What Happens Next written by Douglas Bauer and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2013-09-15 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is life about but the continuous posing of the questions: what happens next, and what do we make of it when it arrives? In these highly evocative personal essays, Douglas Bauer weaves together the stories of his own and his parents’ lives, the meals they ate, the work and rewards and regrets that defined them, and the inevitable betrayal by their bodies as they aged. His collection features at its center a long and memory-rich piece seasoned with sensory descriptions of the midday dinners his mother cooked for her farmer husband and father-in-law every noon for many years. It’s this memoir in miniature that sets the table for the other stories that surround it—of love and bitterness, of hungers served and denied. Good food and marvelous meals would take on other revelatory meanings for Bauer as a young man, when he met, became lifelong friends with, and was tutored in the pleasures of an appetite for life by M. F. K. Fisher, the century’s finest writer in English on “the art of eating,” to borrow one of her titles. The unavoidable companion of the sensual joys of food and friendship is the fragility and ultimately the mortality of the body. As a teenager, Bauer courted sports injuries to impress others, sometimes with his toughness and other times with his vulnerability. And as happens to all of us, eventually his body began to show the common signs of wear—cataracts, an irregular heartbeat, an arthritic knee. That these events might mark the arc of his life became clear when his mother, a few months shy of eighty-seven, slipped on some ice and injured herself. In these clear-eyed, wry and graceful essays, Douglas Bauer presents with candor and humor the dual calendars of his own mortality and that of his aging parents, evoking the regrets and affirmations inherent in being human.

Download or read book No One in New Orleans Will Die written by Js Greene and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his newly renovated apartment, Lance knelt on the floor, unpacking the last of the boxes. The easily maneuvered box was carefully labeled, "Delicate," by his wife. He could still hear her crash and bump in the distance as he vigorously attempted to settle in the apartment. He thought about his wife's delicate features. Her caramel skin was silk in his palms whenever he touched her. The auburn strands of her hair were purposely highlighted by the sun's rays which barely compared to her smile. Her delicate nose was the perfect measure between pointy and rounded. He loved to lose himself in her gaze and felt absolute warmth when her dark eyes fixated on him. Lance soon stopped wrapping the boxes and noticed a beautiful woman staring at him in the doorway. She stood 5'7, shapely, worn tight fitting blue denim jeans and a gray tee-shirt. She immediately pulled her hair back into a ponytail and approached Lance. Her body swayed towards him and he remained intrigued with each curvature. "Babe, what are you doing?" He asked. "Well, Babe," she begun, "I am getting ready to help you unpack our boxes." "I'm almos' finished." He stated as he threw the last empty box across the room. "Dang . . . I feel so bad about you doing all of this by yourself." She said while giggling. "Destiny, don't play wid me." "I am not trying to, Booby. I am jus' saying that you shoulda called me in or somethin'. I really coulda helped you with this." Lance stared lovingly at his wife as he moved gracefully in front of her. He stretched out his arms and soon placed them around her waist. He kissed her on the forehead and quickly took one step back. "I love you." He smiled. 10 J.S. Greene "Awww. I love you too," Destiny paused, "what made you say that?" "I jus' know that I'm a lucky man." "Ok then . . . I am a lucky woman." She replied. The newlyweds continued to embrace each other in the living room of their home. The softness of his wife's skin aroused Lance, prompting him to caress her back. He gently dragged his finger up and down her spine as she placed her head against his shoulders and slipped her narrow fingers into the back pocket of his pants. She clutched his flesh through the fabric and began pulsating her fingers, further enticing her husband. He lifted her body over his shoulders and headed into the adjacent bedroom. Inside were Audrey Hepburn paintings Destiny bought a few days ago, and an enormous picture of the Superdome that nearly covered one of the walls in their bedroom. Only the bed was coordinated within the room with fabric prints of the galaxy and the black and gold shear window treatments to match. Lance dropped his bride in the middle of the bed on top of large goose down pillows and Egyptian cotton sheets. He continued to remove her clothes as she lay giggling amongst the stars. Soon, he began to undress in front of his wife in which she lifted her upper body and rested her weight onto her arms. She pleasantly watched her husband remove all linens and anticipated his body becoming one with hers. She removed her ponytail holder and Lance began to tousle her hair with his fingers. He lowered the tip of his tongue and slid vertically on the side of her brown neck while squeezing her breasts with his hands. She commenced to write her name in his upper back with her finger nails. Without hesitation, Lance accepted the invite and found himself lost in Destiny. The two made love without any interruptions except the occasional phone call by a solicitor-they never noticed the figure in the window, watching them and lusting. The next morning, Lance awoke in Destiny's arms as the alarm clock obnoxiously announced a new day. He stretched his arms as he sat up in the bed. He leaned over and gazed at his wif
