Book excerpt: The first in the new Power Polemics series, Thomas Crow's No Idols: The Missing Theology of Art turns away from contemporary cultural theories to face a pervading blindspot in today's art-historical inquiry: religion. Crow pursues a perhaps unpopular notion of Christianity's continued presence in modern abstract art and in the process makes a case for art's own terrain of theology: one that eschews idolatry by means of abstraction. Tracking the original anti-idolatry controversy of the Jansenists, anchored in a humble still life by Chardin, No Idols sets the scene for the development of an art of reflection rather than representation, and divinity without doctrine. Crow's reinstatement of the metaphysical is made through the work of New Zealand artist Colin McCahon and American artists Mark Rothko, Robert Smithson, James Turrell, and Sister Mary Corita Kent. While a tightly selected group of artists, in their collective statute the author explores the proposal that spiritual art, as opposed to "a simulacrum of one," is conceivable for our own time.

Book No Gods But God

Download or read book No Gods But God written by Dennis Newkirk and published by Hh Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is it that so many of us settle for a less-than-satisfying Christian life? We suffer the symptoms-spiritual dryness, dissatisfaction, and unanswered prayers-of a yet-unidentified problem that creates an obstacle between God and us. We seem unable to connect the dots between our symptoms and the problem causing them: God is no longer first in our hearts. Pastor Dennis Newkirk shares how God revealed to their church their idolatry. The lessons were difficult, but the result was an extraordinary spiritual revival and much deeper fellowship with God. No gods but God is about learning to confront our modern-day idolatry and how God uses a four-step pattern to call our hearts back to him. Examining our own lives before God and admitting that our hearts have strayed isn't easy, and it is most certainly humbling. But that's what God wants-a humbled, repentant person standing before him willing to be used in service for him. Let No gods but God show you the way.

Book Soulside Washington DC 1986 1989

Download or read book Soulside Washington DC 1986 1989 written by Alexis Fleisig and published by Akashic Books. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A photographic history of the DC-based 1980s punk rock band that recorded for Dischord Records. “If you know and love the band, this is a must, if you like DC punk bands, also.” —Trust (Germany) Soulside, a band from the mid-1980s Dischord Records punk rock scene in Washington, DC, grew into maturity in a few short years, going from occasional club shows to nationwide tours and a full European tour in 1989 immediately preceding the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union. With songs influenced by the political and social leanings of the DC punk world of the eighties, Soulside worked with a worldwide underground network to tour throughout North America and Europe. The four-year span of the band would end with a recording session of their last album, Hot Bodi-Gram, in Eindhoven, Holland, at the conclusion of their final tour. As a perennial photographer, graphic designer, and archivist, the band’s drummer, Alexis Fleisig, has kept a collection of photos and flyers from these tours and has compiled as much as he could into this volume. The book is an ode to the people who made that journey possible, and a chronicle of the great eye-opening experiences those moments brought to the band and others.

Book Counterfeit Gods

    Book Details:
  • Author : Timothy Keller
  • Publisher : Hachette UK
  • Release : 2010-09-16
  • ISBN : 1848948530
  • Pages : 181 pages

Download or read book Counterfeit Gods written by Timothy Keller and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2010-09-16 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of idolatry has been with the human race for thousands of years; the subtle temptation is always to take what is good and turn it into the ultimate good, elevating it above all other things in the search for security and meaning. In this timely and challenging book, New York pastor Timothy Keller looks at the issue of idolatry throughout the Bible -- from the worship of actual idols in the Old Testament, to the idolatry of money by the rich young ruler when he was challenged by Jesus to give up all his wealth. Using classic stories from the Bible Keller cuts through our dependence on the glittering false idols of money, sex and power to uncover the path towards trust in the real ultimate -- God. Today's idols may look different from those of the Old Testament, but Keller argues that they are no less damaging. Culturally transforming as well as biblically based, COUNTERFEIT GODS is a powerful look at the temptation to worship what can only disappoint, and is a vital message in today's current climate of financial and social difficulty.

Book excerpt: ***THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER*** We begin to feel less alone, more loved and less judged when good is . . . enough. In this collection of 40ish short spiritual devotionals, Good Enough reveals the small things we can do to inch toward a deeper, richer, truer kind of faith. Through blessings, prayers and human truths, learn to live with imperfection in a culture of self-help that promotes endless progress, and discover a companion for when you want to stop feeling guilty that you're not living your best life now. Hailed by Glennon Doyle as 'the Christian Joan Didion', in these gorgeously written reflections Kate Bowler and Jessica Richie proffer fresh imagination for how truth, beauty, and meaning can be discovered amidst the chaos of life. Their words celebrate kindness, honesty and interdependence in a culture that rewards ruthless individualism and blind optimism. Ultimately, in these pages we can rest in the encouragement to strive for what is possible today - while recognising that though we are finite, the life in front of us can still be beautiful.
