Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alonso Núnez’s playful story, Dave Morrison’s rollicking Spanish-to-English translation, and Bruna Assis Brasil’s imaginative illustrations offer a doomsday vision of a child’s first day of school that any young reader will recognize. Zombies, monsters, and dragons stalk this book’s pages. Cries of despair echo through them. Prisons and dungeons lie in wait. Is this a nightmare? Is it an apocalypse? Well, yes—because it’s the day before our narrator’s first day of school, and all entreaties to his mother are falling on deaf ears. Why should he go to school when he already knows two letters, “N” and “O,” and he knows they spell NO!, which is exactly the word this occasion demands? Why aren’t these magic letters working anymore? Lexile Level 490; F&P Level L

Book Hell No We Didn t Go

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eli Greenbaum
  • Publisher : University Press of Kansas
  • Release : 2024-05-11
  • ISBN : 0700636307
  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book Hell No We Didn t Go written by Eli Greenbaum and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2024-05-11 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As long as there have been wars, there has been conscription. And conscription has never been popular. When asked in a Gallup poll taken in August 1965 whether the US decision to send troops to Vietnam was a mistake, 60 percent of Americans polled said no. But as American casualties increased and the war escalated, polls showed fewer Americans supporting US actions in Vietnam. That, however, did not stop the drafting of Americans into military service. Later, when the leaked Pentagon Papers revealed that the United States had misled Congress and the American public about the extent of US involvement in Vietnam through lies and the withholding of information, support was driven further downward. Today, the Vietnam War is regarded as the most unpopular war of the twentieth century. In Hell, No, We Didn’t Go!, Eli Greenbaum presents firsthand accounts of men who were driven to resist or dodge the Vietnam draft at all costs. He introduces readers to a cross section of individuals who found ways to defy the draft by leaving the country, going to prison, becoming conscientious objectors, gaming the system, conspiring to fail physicals, and even enlisting—anything to avoid being drafted. These vivid essays and candid oral histories detail events that were often controversial, sometimes volatile, and almost always emotionally charged. Greenbaum brings together a chorus of first-person accounts of draft resistance and protest held together by an overarching personal narrative while providing context, commentary, and an unusual fifty-year perspective on the men’s decisions to avoid the Vietnam War, no matter what. While some men passively accepted conscription as their fate, others actively resisted it, sometimes going to extremes. Each account reveals individual motivations, fears, and hopes—everything from disagreement with American foreign policy to questions of cowardice and the meaning of patriotism, all underlined by courage and determination.

Book There Ain t No Justice Just Us

Download or read book There Ain t No Justice Just Us written by Gregory Norton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-07-19 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on an actual wildcat strike that occured in 1979, There Ain’t No Justice, Just Us tells the story of a middle-aged college professor, and former seventies radical, who finds himself caught in the web of a mid-life crisis and a decaying marriage. In his search for a more authentic identity, he winds up leading a wildcat strike in a gritty South Chicago factory. Along the way he encounters a variety of leftists and African-American and Mexican industrial workers who lead genuine, if impoverished, lives. The wildcat strike becomes the psychological gauntlet through which the characters must pass to achieve personal integration. The professor’s quest for internal wholeness leads to a love affair with a radical feminist attorney and activist. In the end, the professor must choose between authenticity and love, or continuing his sedate, middle-class life. Ancillary characters, including Cecelia Sanchez, a Mexican-American college student, find themselves drawing psychological strength from the unfolding battle and engaging in their own liberation struggles—in her case, trying to find the inner spirit to move out on her own, away from her patriarchal family.

Although they were sisters, Meredith and Alice were complete opposites. When she was forced to leave the south, Meredith moved in with Alice. With no money and no job, she was forced into the "family" business. It didn't take her long to realize that if she didn't find a safer way to make a living, she wasn't going to make it. Some secrets are meant to be kept. But Mossy found that keeping a secret was a heavy burden. And even the strongest person had her breaking point. Running from a secret that refused to be left behind drove Mossy right into Meredith's life and right into another mess.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been written for people of all walks of life. It's message is plain and simple. There is a God, the creator of all things and He has given His Word to all mankind. His Word, or the Bible, was given to mankind by God through the Holy Spirit. God choose to speak to the hearts and minds of many men and woman over a period of hundreds of years to make known to us His Wisdom, Knowledge and Understandings. He also gave us the instructions, or a blueprint, for establishing an everlasting relationship with Him based on His Principles. Believe it or not, God is still speaking to men and woman today! The message of this book is truly a message from God. As you read this book it is recommended that you also have your Bible handy. Use this book as a focal point to identify the differences between the practices of man and the Word of God. Also, please be advised that what God has said is the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Finally, from the Book of Revelations we find these words recorded; Revelation: 22: 18 to 20 says; 18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. 20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

Book excerpt: This world and the next sounds as though there are only two forms of existence, but that is only the beginning. Milton Warner is not only a very gifted medium but his soul travels further than just 'the other side'. He has a challenge: To rid the earth and surrounding spiritual levels of the terrible evil which threatens to destroy everything. He realises there is a specific target, although with every possible answer there are numerous questions. The interaction between the different levels is important for the sake of their eternal existence but only a chosen group have been selected to fulfil the final task. Any previous theory about wormholes or time locks may leave you with a very different outlook on such things when you view them from another perspective. Each character is an individual in their own right, some with unique talents such as spirits Ariel and Fluke, or the spiky Jo, who is a bit wayward and colourful with her retorts. Warning: It may play with your mind.
