Download or read book Taking Parenting Public written by Sylvia Ann Hewlett and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2002 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking Parenting Public makes a compelling case that parenting has become dangerously undervalued in America today. It calls for a new investment-both personal and public-into the work of raising children and argues that we are all 'stockholders' in the next generation. With a foreword by Sylvia Ann Hewlett and Cornel West, Taking Parenting Public crosses boundaries to bring together thinkers from diverse fields spanning the political spectrum. It features contributions from distinguished experts in economics, political science, public policy, child development, public health, history, and the media. While recent books have focused on working mothers or absent fathers, Taking Parenting Public is the first volume to take a comprehensive look at the common struggles of parents. These essays go beyond the usual chest-beating about busy parents torn between work and family demands to suggest bold solutions. Instead of the typical call for 'parent replacement'-more child care, more after school programs and more mentors-the contributors offer fresh strategies for 'parent replenishment, ' ways to put mothers and fathers back into the lives of their children not only as economic providers, but also as emotional and moral providers

Download or read book Race and Crime written by Elizabeth Brown and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminal justice practices such as policing and imprisonment are integral to the creation of racialized experiences in U.S. society. Race as an important category of difference, however, did not arise here with the criminal justice system but rather with the advent of European colonial conquest and the birth of the U.S. racial state. Race and Crime examines how race became a defining feature of the system and why mass incarceration emerged as a new racial management strategy. This book reviews the history of race and criminology and explores the impact of racist colonial legacies on the organization of criminal justice institutions. Using a macrostructural perspective, students will learn to contextualize issues of race, crime, and criminal justice. Topics include: How “coloniality” explains the practices that reproduce racial hierarchies The birth of social science and social programs from the legacies of racial science The defining role of geography and geographical conquest in the continuation of mass incarceration The emergence of the logics of crime control, the War on Drugs, the redefinition of federal law enforcement, and the reallocation of state resources toward prison building, policing, and incarceration How policing, courts, and punishment perpetuate the colonial order through their institutional structures and policies Race and Crime will help students understand how everyday practices of punishment and surveillance are employed in and through the police, courts, and community to create and shape the geographies of injustice in the United States today.
Download or read book Sermons to Remember written by Pastor Ronald Dorsey Sr. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-10-28 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables (2 Tim. 4:24) The truth of Gods Word must be preached to this generation. Only through the preaching of the Word of God can this world be redeemed. These sermons were given by the inspiration of Gods Holy Spirit. Some sermons will uplift, and some will discipline you. To accept the Word is to accept Gods instructions. To this world, the preaching of Gods word is foolishness. A simply act of preaching on the streets is seen and viewed as a foolish thing to do for many. Some mocked the messenger, and many have mocked our savior Jesus Christ and those who followed after him. I am just Gods humble servant who wants to see many receive Jesus as Lord. Among the many I would like to see receive Jesus as Lord are my earthly family. God is my everything, and everyone deserves to know him and have a relationship with him. My greatest achievement was choosing the Lord as my personal savior. I am very proud to say that I am a child of the King. One of my favorite scripture verses is Isaiah 40:31, But they that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint. My favorite song is Invisible Faith by the Canton Spirituals. It is God who helps me live a prayerful, humble, anointed, and appointed life. The scripture says that the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord (Ps. 37:23). Like John, I cried and will continue be a voice crying in the wilderness saying that the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand (Matt. 3:2). Like Isaiah, who heard the voice saying Who will go for me? And he answered and said, Hear am I, Lord send me, Ill go. And like Paul, Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended; but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching fourth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Phil. 3:14).
