Book excerpt: La presente investigación pretende evidenciar la importancia de las destrezas de la inteligencia emocional en los administradores y maestros dentro de los programas educativos que se ofrecen en el Departamento de Corrección y Rehabilitación de Puerto Rico para el logro de la autoeficacia de estos. Goleman (1995) define la Inteligencia Emocional Goleman como la capacidad de reconocer nuestros propios sentimientos y de los demás, de motivarnos y de manejar adecuadamente las relaciones. Es esa capacidad que posee el ser humano para la autorreflexión, en donde pueda identificar sus propias emociones y poder regularlas en forma apropiada. Los administradores son el instrumento para desarrollar nuevas ideas y encaminar el área educativa donde trabajan los maestros. Los maestros se convierten en guías, líderes, en ejemplo y muchos miembros de la población correccional los consideran hasta la única familia. Este trabajo investigativo es de índole cuantitativo, no experimental bajo el tipo descriptivo-correlacional-causal. La muestra fue de 10 participantes para el estudio piloto y 40 parcipantes para el estudio formal. Ambos estudios estuvieron compuestos por administradores y maestros que trabajan dentro de los programas educativos del Departamento de Corrección y Rehabilitación de Puerto Rico. Los hallazgos de este trabajo presentan la importancia del considerar integrar la inteligencia emocional en el rol de los maestros y administradores que trabajan directamente con los miembros de población correccional de Puerto Rico. Los particpantes demuestran tener conocimiento en el tema de la inteligencia emocional, pero se recomienda pueda ser integrada de manera activa y reforzarse continuamente. De igual forma, conocen sobre la autoeficacia, siendo así un aspecto positivo para la solución de situaciones tanto en el aspecto profesional como personal. Se encontró que los administradores y maestros se sienten satisfechos con su clima organizacional, siendo un aspecto clave para el crecimiento dentro de una organización. Los participantes, administradores y maestros, demuestran compromiso y se perciben receptivos a recibir cambios en favor de la organización y de las funciones que realizan.

El éxito se concentra en ciertas cualidades personales, tales como la iniciativa y la empatía, la adaptabilidad y la persuasión; rasgos determinantes en la Inteligencia Emocional (IE). Dado que la Inteligencia Emocional es un concepto que combina inteligencia y emoción, aspectos que poseen todos los seres humanos; las diferencias entre los más exitosos de los menos exitosos dependen del grado en que desarrollemos la inteligencia y el control que poseamos de nuestras emociones. La Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico es una Institución sin fines de lucro dedicada al servicio educativo; sin embargo como todo empresa necesita mantenerse competitiva en un mercado de alta competencia, por lo que tomando como punto de partida evaluar el coeficiente de empatía y el autoconocimiento emocional permitirá conocer y ayudar a desarrollar en sus empleados la Inteligencia Emocional; factor que finalmente puede ser determinante para mantener una posición de liderato en el mercado educativo. Esta investigación tiene varios propósitos. Primero: conocer sobre la conducta humana, las causas de determinada conducta y sus repercusiones. Segundo: saber si los empleados administrativos de la Pontificia Universidad Católica conocen el término Inteligencia Emocional y poseen destrazas de empatía. Tercero: saber si el Personal Administrativo de la Pontificia Universidad Católica conoce sobre sus emociones y la de los demás. Cuarto: compartir información y hallazgos relevantes en la investigación para que la Pontificia Universidad Católica pueda desarrollar al máximo las capacidades de su personal. En el Capítulo I se evalúa el concepto de Inteligencia Emocional a través de cómo ha sido definido. En el Capítulo II se estudia la evolución de la Inteligencia. En el Capítulo III se estudian elementos que tienen relevancia con la Inteligencia Emocional; como lo son las emociones y cómo se manifiestan a través de los estados de ánimo. En el Capítulo IV se estudia la importancia de los rasgos de la personalidad para alcanzar y mantener el éxito. El Capítulo V describe herramientas disponibles para medir rasgos relacionados con la Inteligencia Emocional. El Capítulo VI presenta la metodología utilizada para la investigación. En el Capítulo VII se presentan los hallazgos de la investigación a través del análisis estadístico sobre el coeficiente de empatía y sobre el autoconocimiento de las emociones en el Personal Administrativo de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico. El Capítulo VIII presenta las conclusiones de la investigación. Incluye recomendaciones para la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico y futuras investigaciones que puedan realizarse en la misma.
