Book NISA type Income Stabilization Programs and U S Countervail

Download or read book NISA type Income Stabilization Programs and U S Countervail written by Darren Eurich and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this study are to assess the factors that are important in determining countervailing duty actions on farm commodities by the United States, and to assess what these factors mean for the design of a new safety net program (such as the Net Income Stabilization Account or NISA type) in Saskatchewan. The first part describes US countervail law and the US countervail process with emphasis on the question of specificity. Some past countervail cases in which specificity has figured are discussed. The second part uses statistical analysis to assess what roles, if any, are played by the specificity criteria and US political lobbying in countervail actions. The third phase of the study assesses what the results of the analysis mean for the design of future farm income safety nets in Canada by focusing on the parameters of a new Saskatchewan safety net program. Three features are identified that may conflict with US specificity criteria.

Book Internationalization and Canadian Agriculture

Download or read book Internationalization and Canadian Agriculture written by Grace Skogstad and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2008-09-06 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, Canada's agricultural industry, one of the world's largest, has had to adjust to global trade developments such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the World Trade Organization. Internationalization and Canadian Agriculture examines the patterns of continuity and change in Canadian agricultural policy making in important areas like farm income support programs, prairie grain marketing, supply management, animal and food product safety, and the regulation of genetically modified crops and foods. Arguing that the effects of internationalization have been mediated by Canada's political institutional framework, Grace Skogstad demonstrates how the goals and strategies of authoritative political actors in Canada's federal and parliamentary systems have been decisive to policy developments. Skogstad details the interaction between agriculture and the political economy of Canada, shows how international and domestic trade shape Canadian agricultural policies, and argues that while agricultural programs have changed, the post-war state assistance agricultural paradigm has persisted. A thorough political analysis and history of late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century Canadian agricultural policy and policy-making, Internationalization of Canadian Agriculture is an important contribution to political economy and public policy.

Download or read book Agricultural Policy Agribusiness and Rent Seeking Behaviour Third Edition written by Andrew Schmitz and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-04-27 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Costing billions of dollars annually, international trade in agricultural products is impactful and influenced by several factors, including climate change, food policy, and government legislation. The third edition of Agricultural Policy, Agribusiness, and Rent-Seeking Behaviour provides comprehensive economic analyses of the policies that affect agriculture and agribusiness in Canada and the United States. Looking at current agricultural policies, the third edition includes new chapters on food pyramids, climate change, and GMOs, while also highlighting the effect of international policies on Canadian trade, including the problematic US ethanol policy. The new edition addresses current issues, including how the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected agricultural value chains and played a hand in the ongoing growth in opioid use. Including a number of key findings, and discussing current debates on topics including foreign ownership of Canadian farmland, Agricultural Policy, Agribusiness, and Rent-Seeking Behaviour will appeal to students in agricultural economics and policy, as well as policymakers, agricultural firms, energy companies, and readers wishing to reduce their nation’s carbon footprint.

Book Moral Sentiments and Material Interests

Download or read book Moral Sentiments and Material Interests written by Herbert Gintis and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moral Sentiments and Material Interests presents an innovative synthesis of research in different disciplines to argue that cooperation stems not from the stereotypical selfish agent acting out of disguised self-interest but from the presence of "strong reciprocators" in a social group. Presenting an overview of research in economics, anthropology, evolutionary and human biology, social psychology, and sociology, the book deals with both the theoretical foundations and the policy implications of this explanation for cooperation. Chapter authors in the remaining parts of the book discuss the behavioral ecology of cooperation in humans and nonhuman primates, modeling and testing strong reciprocity in economic scenarios, and reciprocity and social policy. The evidence for strong reciprocity in the book includes experiments using the famous Ultimatum Game (in which two players must agree on how to split a certain amount of money or they both get nothing.)
