This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is vital to all living organisms, but this valued resource is increasingly being threatened as human populations grow and demand more water of good quality for all domestic purposes and economic activities (commercial cum industrial purposes). Water abstraction for domestic use agricultural production, mining, industrial production, power generation, forestry etc can lead to deterioration in water quality and quantity that impact not only the aquatic ecosystems but also the availability of safe hygienic and potable water for human consumption (United Nations Environment Programme, 2006). A healthy environment is necessary for any organism, since life depends on the continuance of a proper exchange of essential substances and energies between the organisms and its surroundings (Welch 1952). Water has a unique place on planet as it supports life on earth. The entire fabric of life is woven around it. Man uses this important resource collected in depressions on earth or creates depressions by blocking the streams and constructing reservoirs, because of industrial development and unplanned urbanization (Singh et .al. 2002). Water as one of the basic substances of life is called upon to serve many beneficial uses that require a high degree of purity to provide a suitable habitat for life or other uses primarily including drinking which may depend on the most basic physico- chemical properties. Beneficial uses of water supply, industry supply, agricultural stock and wild life propagation of aquatic life, aesthetic enjoyment, depression and assimilation of wastes. Hence water should be free from even material that will settle to form objectionable deposits, floating debris, scum and other comparable matter, substances that produce objectionable colour, odour, taste or turbidity which are toxic or which produce undesirable physiological responses in human beings, fish, other animal life and plants (Dwiwedi & Dwiwedi 2010). Safe drinking water is a human birth right as clean air however much of the world’s population does not have access to safe drinking water.

Book Krishna Sobti

Download or read book Krishna Sobti written by Sukrita Paul Kumar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book engages with the life and works of the distinctive Hindi writer Krishna Sobti, known for making bold choices of themes in her writing. Also known for her extraordinary use of the Hindi language, she emerges as an embodiment of a counter archive. While presenting the author in the context of her times, this volume offers critical perspectives to define her position in the canon of modern Indian literature. Alongside important critical essays on her, the inclusion of excerpts from the translations of some major works by the author, such as Zindaginama, Mitro Marjani and Ai Ladki, greatly facilitate an understanding of her worldview and the contexts in which she wrote. Also included in this book are some of her reflections on the creative process that help in unfolding the complexities of her characters and her specific approach to the language of fiction. Writing in the times of significant political and cultural churnings, her fiction includes themes such as the Partition of the country and its aftermath, women and their sexuality, desire and violence, history and memory. Her writing subverted the dominant narratives of the times and de-historicised history. Her own essays and other critical writings demonstrate the way Krishna Sobti’s characters are abundantly polyphonic and seeped in social realities. They encapsulate the cultural milieu of their times and serve as a site of resistance to the dominant archive of power. Her interactions with her fellow Hindi writers such as Nirmal Verma and Krishan Baldev Vaid, as also her letters, her memoirs and the reminiscences of others, further enrich this volume and establish her unique voice. Part of the ‘Writer in Context’ Series, this book will be useful for scholars and researchers of Indian literature, English literature, postcolonial studies, cultural studies, gender studies, translation studies and Partition studies.

Book History Narrative and Testimony in Amitav Ghosh s Fiction

Download or read book History Narrative and Testimony in Amitav Ghosh s Fiction written by Chitra Sankaran and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first collection of international scholarship on the fiction of Amitav Ghosh. Ghosh's work is read by a wide audience and is well regarded by general readers, critics, and scholars throughout the world. Born in India, Ghosh has lived in India, the United Kingdom, and the United States. His work spans genres from contemporary realism to historical fiction to science fiction, but has consistently dealt with the dislocations, violence, and meetings of peoples and cultures engendered by colonialism. The essays in this volume analyze Ghosh's novels in ways that yield new insights into concepts central to postcolonial and transnational studies, making important intertextual connections and foregrounding links to prevailing theoretical and speculative scholarship. The work's introduction argues that irony is central to Ghosh's vision and discusses the importance of the concepts of "testimony" and "history" to Ghosh's narratives. An invaluable interview with Amitav Ghosh discusses individual works and the author's overall philosophy.

Book Conservation of Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary Ramsar Site and Bhaskarpura Wetland

Download or read book Conservation of Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary Ramsar Site and Bhaskarpura Wetland written by Prof. Dr. Nirmal Kumar, J.I. and published by Google Book Publishers. This book was released on with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Ramsar Site is a wetland site, designated to be of international importance. These wetlands are protected under strict guidelines of the Ramsar Convention on wetlands. It provides national action and international cooperation regarding the conservation of wetlands, and wise sustainable use of their resources. The mission of the Ramsar Convention is “Conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local and national actions and international cooperation, as a contribution towards achieving sustainable development throughout the world”. The Ramsar Convention, signed in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, is the only global treaty that focuses specifically on wetlands. The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands, recognizing the fundamental ecological functions of wetlands and their economic, cultural, scientific, and recreational value. Today 170 nations are signatories to the Ramsar Convention. Ramsar identifies wetlands of international importance, especially those providing waterfowl habitat. Ramsar Sites in India are declared under the Ramsar Convention, which was established by UNESCO in 1971. A site is declared as a Ramsar Wetland Site in India, if it meets any one of the nine criteria set under the Convention of Wetland. India's tally of 49 designated wetlands spread over 10,936 sq km in 18 states and two Union Territories is the largest network of Ramsar Sites in South Asia. Till 2022, the number stood at 37, then 12 sites were added to the list including Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary and Wadhwana Bird Sanctuary in Gujarat. The book Conservation of Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary (Ramsar Site) and Bhaskarpura Wetland focuses on environmental, ecological, and biological studies of two major wetlands of Gujarat viz. Thol Lake Bird Sanctuary and Bhaskarpura Wetland, covering abiotic and biotic components, eutrophication, hydrochemistry, geochemistry, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and waterbirds. The book highlights an in-depth study of surface water and bottom sediment quality, diversity, density, abundance, commonness, rarity of plankton including qualitative and quantitative characters, diversity indices, population dynamics of waterbirds, and correlation between abiotic and biotic components. The book would unquestionably be the need of an hour for wetland managers, wetland conservationists, and policy makers or decision authorities to prevent the unrestrained exploitation of wetland biodiversity, destruction of potential wetland habitats, and uncontrolled interactions of man and technology with lentic ecosystems of the world.
