The catalog dedicates a full spread to each of the 49 artists with color images of the art they received and responded to, the art they created, as well as an essay they wrote about their experience. The catalog provides a rare look at the thought processes and studio practices of these unique and private people.The Circle of Truth project is a wholly unique collaboration of 49 contemporary artists, each sequestered and unknown to one another, working in absolute secrecy. Taking a full nine years from launch to fruition, the Circle is a modern, visual take on a common childhood schoolroom exercise, wherein a secret message was whispered from student to student. Often referred to as the Rumor Game or Telephone.In the case of the Circle of Truth, the "whispered" message was imbued in the first painting, which was then delivered, along with a blank canvas, to the second artist. That artist was given no direction other than to find the Truth in in the previous painting, respond to what they perceived, and create a work using the blank canvas, that would go to the next artist, also unknown to them. And so, it went, through 49 artists, each confronted with a work from an unknown artist and a blank canvas. Participants were encouraged to work outside of their normal, comfortable styles. Once their creations were complete, each was asked to write an essay about their experience.The 49 works of art were created specifically for the Circle of Truth by 49 different and often disparateartists. Mostly oil paintings, all of the works measure 20 inches square by 2 inches deep, and are presented in chronological order. The Circle of Truth project opens a dialog regarding the nature of what we consider Truth to be, and evenwhether we think it exists. The Circle of Truth exhibition touches on a need that resinates deeply in the human psyche - access to meaningful, truthful contact with others. This truthful contact is the secret ingredient in the Circle of Truth project.Using paint and words the artists speak to the viewers candidly, providing a rare perspective into theirexperience and thought processes.Viewers of all ages and backgrounds, will be able to quickly understand and appreciate the meaning of the Circle of Truth. There are no prerequisites or any fundamental knowledge needed to appreciate and recognize Truth. Book excerpt: Four artists who are today relatively or almost entirely unknown – one woman and three men – nevertheless played a part in the aesthetic upheavals that led to abstraction in 1940s Montreal. Very active in the art milieu throughout the decade, Marian Dale Scott, Fritz Brandtner, Henry Eveleigh, and Gordon Webber captured the attention of critics of the time, who employed the term “abstract art” to describe both non-objective works and bold formal explorations that retained some reference to visible reality. An examination of these artists’ practices reveals a remarkable openness to international contemporary art trends – French, German, British, and American. Their work and its critical reception conjure a complex picture of the debates on abstraction that took place in Montreal during the 1940s, so often reduced to the controversies surrounding the emergence of the Automatiste movement. The artistic innovations of Paul-Émile Borduas and his group and the radical tone of their 1948 manifesto Refus global cemented their status as Quebec’s abstract avant-garde but also had the effect of eclipsing other visions of abstraction being explored during the same period. This book reinstates the oeuvres of these forgotten protagonists in the narrative of abstract art, illustrating how their practices encompassed a variety of themes: emotion, science, human experience in the broadest sense – but also, as the Second World War unfolded, the violence that marked their era.

Best known as the founder of Bay Area Figurative art, Park moved from Boston to California at the age of seventeen and spent most of his adult life in and around San Francisco. In the immediate postwar years, like many avant-garde American artists, he engaged with Abstract Expressionism and painted non-objectively. In a moment of passion in 1949, he made the radical decision to abandon nearly all of his abstract canvases at the Berkeley city dump and return to the human figure, in so doing marking the beginning of the Bay Area Figurative movement. The astonishingly powerful paintings he made in the decade that followed brought together his long-held interest in classic subjects such as portraiture, domestic interiors, musicians, rowers, and bathers with lush, gestural paint handling and an extraordinary sense of color. In 1958–59 Park reached his expressive peak, reveling in the sensuous qualities of paint to create intensely physical, psychologically charged, and deeply felt canvases. This fertile period cut short by illness in 1960, Park transferred his creative energy to other mediums when he could no longer work on canvas. In the last months of his life, bedridden, he produced an extraordinary thirty-foot-long felt-tip-pen scroll and a poignant series of gouaches. Published to accompany the first major museum exhibition of Park’s work in more than thirty years, David Park: A Retrospective traces the full arc of the artist’s career, from his early social realist and cubist-inspired efforts of the 1930s to his mature figurative paintings of the 1950s and his astounding final works on paper.
