Book Twenty Nine Tales From the French Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Nine Tales From the French All modern literatures contain numerous examples of that shorter form of prose fiction known in English as the Short Story, although none with the possible exception of the Russian has so fully developed it into a distinct species, admirably fitted to express a racial temperament as have the French. The English experiments in this form as late as Maria Edgeworth and George Eliot were merely clumsy abbreviations of the novel, novelettes rather than true short stories, with the elaborate analyses of character, extended descriptions, and ponderous plots of the larger form. And in spite of occasional brilliant exceptions among the younger generation of English fiction writers it may be fairly said that the English temperament has never taken easily to this genre. Their technical process is too often a foreshortening of more elaborate narrative rather than a distinct and focused creation. The English mind turns more naturally to accretion and analysis than to compression and rapid synthesis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales and Novels, Vol. 9 "Are you to be at Lady Clonbrony's gala next week said Lady Langdale to Mrs. Dareville, while they were waiting for their carriages in the crush-room of the opera-house. "O yes! everybody's to be there, I hear, replied Mrs. Dareville. "Your ladyship, of course?" "Why, I don't know: if I possibly can. Lady Clonbrony makes it such a point with me, that I believe I must look in upon her for a few minutes. They are going to a prodigious expense on this occasion. Soho tells me the reception-rooms are all to be new furnished, and in the most magnificent style." "At what a famous rate those Clonbronies are dashing on," said Colonel Heathcock. "Up to any thing." "Who are they? - these Clonbronies, that one hear of 80 much of late?" said her grace of Torcaster. "Irish absentees, I know. But how do they support all this enormous expense?" "The son will have a prodigiously fine estate when some Mr. Quin dies," said Mrs. Dareville. "Yes, everybody who comes from Ireland will have a fine estate when somebody dies," said her grace. "But what have they at present?" "Twenty thousand a-year, they say," replied Mrs. Dareville. "Ten thousand, I believe," cried Lady Langdale. Ten thousand, have they? - possibly," said her grace. "I know nothing about them - have no acquaintance among the Irish. Torcaster knows something of Lady Clonbrony; she has fastened herself, by some mean?, upon him; but I charge him not to commit me. Book Nine Humorous Tales Classic Reprint

Download or read book Nine Humorous Tales Classic Reprint written by Anton Chekhov and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nine Humorous Tales It may be more than mere accident that in the history of modern literature so many men of talent have turned from the practice of medicine to the profession of letters. The physician's office is largely a place of confession and his mind a focus gathering the light of human experiences from every angle. These, if he is a man of imagination as well as of science, he is prompted to reflect through the lens of fiction. Though Anton Chekhov was a physician by training, (having been graduated from the Moscow University in 1884, at the age of twenty-four) he was a writer by preference. The wide knowledge gained from his medical studies and practice, coupled with the fact that his father was a peasant by birth and a city shop-keeper by occupation, must have contributed in great measure to the wide scope of his art. American readers are by this time fairly well acquainted with Chekhov as a writer of many-sided interests and the possessor of a style that has been called the best since de Maupassant. One phase of the great Russian's work, however, has thus far been largely neglected; his humorous vein. This is all the more surprising because the Chekhov of the humorous tales naturally prompts comparison with our own O. Henry, although it would be unfair to both writers to extend the comparison too far. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the greatest writers of our time, his first collection of short stories, written between 1979 and 2011, chronicling—and foretelling—three decades of American life Set in Greece, the Caribbean, Manhattan, a white-collar prison and outer space, these nine stories are a mesmerizing introduction to Don DeLillo’s iconic voice, from the rich, startling, jazz-infused rhythms of his early work to the spare, distilled, monastic language of the later stories. In “Creation,” a couple at the end of a cruise somewhere in the West Indies can’t get off the island—flights canceled, unconfirmed reservations, a dysfunctional economy. In “Human Moments in World War III,” two men orbiting the earth, charged with gathering intelligence and reporting to Colorado Command, hear the voices of American radio, from a half century earlier. In the title story, Sisters Edgar and Grace, nuns working the violent streets of the South Bronx, confirm the neighborhood’s miracle, the apparition of a dead child, Esmeralda. Nuns, astronauts, athletes, terrorists and travelers, the characters in The Angel Esmeralda propel themselves into the world and define it. DeLillo’s sentences are instantly recognizable, as original as the splatter of Jackson Pollock or the luminous rectangles of Mark Rothko. These nine stories describe an extraordinary journey of one great writer whose prescience about world events and ear for American language changed the literary landscape.
