Book excerpt: Anton T. Boisen, who started the clinical pastoral movement, believed that carefully reviewing cases of actual patients is the only effective way to train chaplains. But what distinguishes clinical chaplaincy in the tradition of Boisen from the work of other religious or spiritual practitioners who might lay claim to the title "chaplain"? Responding to a second volume of cases published by George Fitchett and Steve Nolan, the distinguished CPE supervisor Raymond J. Lawrence provides alternative approaches to each case, ones that penetrate more deeply into the heart and soul of the patient, offering a more compassionate and meaningful sort of chaplaincy.Like its predecessor volume, Nine Clinical Cases: The Soul of Pastoral Care & Counseling, this book is intended for those who want to move from a service delivery and "prayer warrior" form of chaplaincy to one that is more psychodynamically based. It is also intended for those who train chaplains and aspire to doing so better.

Book excerpt: This book is actually an expanded review of the Fitchett-Nolan book and its thesis. For each of the nine cases and for each of the three associated critiques, I have provided a summary. Following that, I add my own critique of each case itself and of each associated critique. Following that is a summary and critique of the chapter on ethical concerns by David B. McCurdy. Finally, I set the entire book in the context of the clinical pastoral training tradition. Most of the published work on clinical pastoral supervision seems to have focused on principles and theory. The value of the Fitchett-Nolan work is that it is based on specific clinical cases, the nine cases that are published in the book itself. I hope they will have set the standard for future publications. Theory is useful, but nothing is quite as useful nor quite as engrossing as a specific clinical case. Fitchett, in his introduction to the book, argues for more published cases in the clinical pastoral training field. The current paucity of published clinical cases is actually puzzling in that the movement itself began a century ago with the study of cases. The founder of clinical pastoral training, Anton Boisen, actually made himself and his personal troubles the principal "case." Therefore, I second Fitchett's call for more published cases in the field as the best route for learning the art and science of pastoral care, counseling. and psychothereapy. The work that follows is a running commentary on the 9 cases as well as the 27 commentaries on the cases and on the summary essay, "Ethical Issues in Case Study Publication." In addition to the two editors, six additional persons appear as critics of some of the cases. For better or for worse, I have commented on each and every one. I have elected throughout not to name the specific chaplains whose work is included herein. I am not thereby keeping a confidence. Their names and current positions are clearly identified in the Fitchett-Nolan book itself. But I am electing not to expose them further. I prefer to grant them what meager privacy yet available to them, which is not much. I actually feel some admiration for the nine who put their clinical pastoral work on view for all the world to see-and to pick apart. It is a very courageous choice to put one's work in the public arena for scrutiny. It is also potentially hurtful, particularly if one has thin skin, and, more so, if one has enemies eager to enter the fray for purposes of devaluation. No one is without flaws. No professional works without missteps. And no one is immune to certain blindnesses. But few would choose to lay their flaws and missteps open to public scrutiny. We have to applaud the courage of these presenting chaplains and pastoral counselors who have laid their professional work open to public examination in this book. They have my admiration and my esteem. But, as the reader will see, I have not elected to coddle or to consider the feelings of the presenters of the nine cases published here. I am assuming that they are professionals prepared to receive straightforward critique of their work. Nor do I spare their published critics. Nor do I myself expect to be spared strong rebuttal, particularly in instances where I might have been wrong or uninformed.

Book excerpt: A collection of some of the most famous cases in English law - with an explantion of how they changed things - by two leading commentators. Every UK lawyer knows of Woolmington v. Director of Public Prosecutions, the ruling which established the ëgolden thread of English lawí whereby the burden of proof lies with the prosecutor in a criminal trial, even in the case of murder. But who was ëWoolmingtoní and how many people know that he escaped the death penalty at the eleventh hour, or that he was twice tried for murder? ëLords give man back his lifeí as the Western Gazette put it. Likewise, in the civil law, how and why did a Mrs. Donoghue come to be drinking a bottle of ginger beer containing the remnants of a snail, an event which would ultimately determine ñ at the highest level - that ëthe categories of negligence are never closedí? And how did the tranquil market town of Wednesbury come to be legal shorthand for ëunreasonablenessí. In Famous Cases: Nine Trials that Changed the Law the authors have painstakingly assembled the background to a selection of leading cases in English law. From the Mareva case (synonymous with a type of injunction) to Lord Denningís classic ruling in the High Trees House case (the turning point for equitable estoppel) to that of the former Chilean head of state General Pinochet (in which the House of Lords heard the facts a second time) the authors offer a refreshing perspective to whet the appetite of every law student, general reader or seasoned practitioner interested in how English law evolves.

Book Sex Therapy with Erotically Marginalized Clients

Download or read book Sex Therapy with Erotically Marginalized Clients written by Damon Constantinides and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex Therapy with Erotically Marginalized Clients: Nine Principles of Clinical Support provides a clinical guide to relational sex therapy with individuals, partnerships, polyships, and alternative family structures where one or more of the clients are erotically marginalized. This term refers to people who are at risk of being pathologized and oppressed both outside and inside the clinical setting due to their gender identities, sexual orientations, or sexual practices. The book outlines nine principles for therapeutic practice which meet the needs of erotically marginalized clients, whose forms of sexuality and desire are rarely spoken about and for whom there is a dearth of language in therapeutic contexts. Each principle concludes with a series of ‘key points’ and then followed by illustrative clinical case studies, contributed by sex therapists and clinicians who self-identify as erotically marginalized and who also work with erotically marginalized clients. The book also provides a full glossary, ‘Defining Erotically Marginalized Identities’. The authors and case contributors use a radical and affirming lens to examine erotically marginalized identities that are often neglected. The book bridges gaps between the past, present, and future in the field of sex therapy and greatly expands the diversity of experiences and identities within the field, particularly the experience of multiple oppressions. The book marks a valuable contribution not only to sex therapists but to the wider clinical and therapeutic community.

Book The Big Nine

Download or read book The Big Nine written by Amy Webb and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A call-to-arms about the broken nature of artificial intelligence, and the powerful corporations that are turning the human-machine relationship on its head. We like to think that we are in control of the future of "artificial" intelligence. The reality, though, is that we -- the everyday people whose data powers AI -- aren't actually in control of anything. When, for example, we speak with Alexa, we contribute that data to a system we can't see and have no input into -- one largely free from regulation or oversight. The big nine corporations -- Amazon, Google, Facebook, Tencent, Baidu, Alibaba, Microsoft, IBM and Apple--are the new gods of AI and are short-changing our futures to reap immediate financial gain. In this book, Amy Webb reveals the pervasive, invisible ways in which the foundations of AI -- the people working on the system, their motivations, the technology itself -- is broken. Within our lifetimes, AI will, by design, begin to behave unpredictably, thinking and acting in ways which defy human logic. The big nine corporations may be inadvertently building and enabling vast arrays of intelligent systems that don't share our motivations, desires, or hopes for the future of humanity. Much more than a passionate, human-centered call-to-arms, this book delivers a strategy for changing course, and provides a path for liberating us from algorithmic decision-makers and powerful corporations.
