Book Nilpotent Orbits In Semisimple Lie Algebra

Download or read book Nilpotent Orbits In Semisimple Lie Algebra written by William.M. McGovern and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the 1990s, a circle of ideas emerged relating three very different kinds of objects associated to a complex semisimple Lie algebra: nilpotent orbits, representations of a Weyl group, and primitive ideals in an enveloping algebra. The principal aim of this book is to collect together the important results concerning the classification and properties of nilpotent orbits, beginning from the common ground of basic structure theory. The techniques used are elementary and in the toolkit of any graduate student interested in the harmonic analysis of representation theory of Lie groups. The book develops the Dynkin-Konstant and Bala-Carter classifications of complex nilpotent orbits, derives the Lusztig-Spaltenstein theory of induction of nilpotent orbits, discusses basic topological questions, and classifies real nilpotent orbits. The classical algebras are emphasized throughout; here the theory can be simplified by using the combinatorics of partitions and tableaux. The authors conclude with a survey of advanced topics related to the above circle of ideas. This book is the product of a two-quarter course taught at the University of Washington.

Book Affine Flag Manifolds and Principal Bundles

Download or read book Affine Flag Manifolds and Principal Bundles written by Alexander Schmitt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-28 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affine flag manifolds are infinite dimensional versions of familiar objects such as Graßmann varieties. The book features lecture notes, survey articles, and research notes - based on workshops held in Berlin, Essen, and Madrid - explaining the significance of these and related objects (such as double affine Hecke algebras and affine Springer fibers) in representation theory (e.g., the theory of symmetric polynomials), arithmetic geometry (e.g., the fundamental lemma in the Langlands program), and algebraic geometry (e.g., affine flag manifolds as parameter spaces for principal bundles). Novel aspects of the theory of principal bundles on algebraic varieties are also studied in the book.

Book Nilpotent Orbits Primitive Ideals and Characteristic Classes

Download or read book Nilpotent Orbits Primitive Ideals and Characteristic Classes written by Walter Borho and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. The Subject Matter. Consider a complex semisimple Lie group G with Lie algebra g and Weyl group W. In this book, we present a geometric perspective on the following circle of ideas: polynomials The "vertices" of this graph are some of the most important objects in representation theory. Each has a theory in its own right, and each has had its own independent historical development. - A nilpotent orbit is an orbit of the adjoint action of G on g which contains the zero element of g in its closure. (For the special linear group 2 G = SL(n,C), whose Lie algebra 9 is all n x n matrices with trace zero, an adjoint orbit consists of all matrices with a given Jordan canonical form; such an orbit is nilpotent if the Jordan form has only zeros on the diagonal. In this case, the nilpotent orbits are classified by partitions of n, given by the sizes of the Jordan blocks.) The closures of the nilpotent orbits are singular in general, and understanding their singularities is an important problem. - The classification of irreducible Weyl group representations is quite old.

Book Cohomology of Vector Bundles and Syzygies

Download or read book Cohomology of Vector Bundles and Syzygies written by Jerzy Weyman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-09 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central theme of this book is an exposition of the geometric technique of calculating syzygies. It is written from a point of view of commutative algebra, and without assuming any knowledge of representation theory the calculation of syzygies of determinantal varieties is explained. The starting point is a definition of Schur functors, and these are discussed from both an algebraic and geometric point of view. Then a chapter on various versions of Bott's Theorem leads on to a careful explanation of the technique itself, based on a description of the direct image of a Koszul complex. Applications to determinantal varieties follow, plus there are also chapters on applications of the technique to rank varieties for symmetric and skew symmetric tensors of arbitrary degree, closures of conjugacy classes of nilpotent matrices, discriminants and resultants. Numerous exercises are included to give the reader insight into how to apply this important method.

Book Vertex Algebras and Algebraic Curves

Download or read book Vertex Algebras and Algebraic Curves written by Edward Frenkel and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2004-08-25 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertex algebras are algebraic objects that encapsulate the concept of operator product expansion from two-dimensional conformal field theory. Vertex algebras are fast becoming ubiquitous in many areas of modern mathematics, with applications to representation theory, algebraic geometry, the theory of finite groups, modular functions, topology, integrable systems, and combinatorics. This book is an introduction to the theory of vertex algebras with a particular emphasis on the relationship with the geometry of algebraic curves. The notion of a vertex algebra is introduced in a coordinate-independent way, so that vertex operators become well defined on arbitrary smooth algebraic curves, possibly equipped with additional data, such as a vector bundle. Vertex algebras then appear as the algebraic objects encoding the geometric structure of various moduli spaces associated with algebraic curves. Therefore they may be used to give a geometric interpretation of various questions of representation theory. The book contains many original results, introduces important new concepts, and brings new insights into the theory of vertex algebras. The authors have made a great effort to make the book self-contained and accessible to readers of all backgrounds. Reviewers of the first edition anticipated that it would have a long-lasting influence on this exciting field of mathematics and would be very useful for graduate students and researchers interested in the subject. This second edition, substantially improved and expanded, includes several new topics, in particular an introduction to the Beilinson-Drinfeld theory of factorization algebras and the geometric Langlands correspondence.

Book Geometric Representation Theory and Extended Affine Lie Algebras

Download or read book Geometric Representation Theory and Extended Affine Lie Algebras written by Erhard Neher and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lie theory has connections to many other disciplines such as geometry, number theory, mathematical physics, and algebraic combinatorics. The interaction between algebra, geometry and combinatorics has proven to be extremely powerful in shedding new light on each of these areas. This book presents the lectures given at the Fields Institute Summer School on Geometric Representation Theory and Extended Affine Lie Algebras held at the University of Ottawa in 2009. It provides a systematic account by experts of some of the exciting developments in Lie algebras and representation theory in the last two decades. It includes topics such as geometric realizations of irreducible representations in three different approaches, combinatorics and geometry of canonical and crystal bases, finite $W$-algebras arising as the quantization of the transversal slice to a nilpotent orbit, structure theory of extended affine Lie algebras, and representation theory of affine Lie algebras at level zero. This book will be of interest to mathematicians working in Lie algebras and to graduate students interested in learning the basic ideas of some very active research directions. The extensive references in the book will be helpful to guide non-experts to the original sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last forty years, David Vogan has left an indelible imprint on the representation theory of reductive groups. His groundbreaking ideas have lead to deep advances in the theory of real and p-adic groups, and have forged lasting connections with other subjects, including number theory, automorphic forms, algebraic geometry, and combinatorics. Representations of Reductive Groups is an outgrowth of the conference of the same name, dedicated to David Vogan on his 60th birthday, which took place at MIT on May 19-23, 2014. This volume highlights the depth and breadth of Vogan's influence over the subjects mentioned above, and point to many exciting new directions that remain to be explored. Notably, the first article by McGovern and Trapa offers an overview of Vogan's body of work, placing his ideas in a historical context. Contributors: Pramod N. Achar, Jeffrey D. Book New Developments in Lie Theory and Geometry

Download or read book New Developments in Lie Theory and Geometry written by Carolyn Gordon and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2009 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an outgrowth of the Sixth Workshop on Lie Theory and Geometry, held in the province of Cordoba, Argentina in November 2007. The representation theory and structure theory of Lie groups play a pervasive role throughout mathematics and physics. Lie groups are tightly intertwined with geometry and each stimulates developments in the other. The aim of this volume is to bring to a larger audience the mutually beneficial interaction between Lie theorists and geometers that animated the workshop. Two prominent themes of the representation theoretic articles are Gelfand pairs and the representation theory of real reductive Lie groups. Among the more geometric articles are an exposition of major recent developments on noncompact homogeneous Einstein manifolds and aspects of inverse spectral geometry presented in settings accessible to readers new to the area.
