While the school has fallen into a financial crisis, not paying staff in a month, Abigail trusts they will pull through. That is, until golden-curled London Crane arrives from Maui, hired to teach without any warning about the economic issues. Despite their immediate attraction, their relationship is strained with London?s cynicism and Abigail?s corporate loyalty. Suddenly, English World?s CEO is missing. Rumors fly. London is impressed with the action Abigail takes to protect her staff and students and, as the two explore temples, festivals, and each other, passion deepens to romance. But when Abigail?s nationwide counterparts disappear, ten- sion mounts. London insists she go home to protect herself, and she bristles at his demands, arguing that Nihon (Japan) is her home and she?s needed by her teachers and students. Book The Arabian Nights and Orientalism

Download or read book The Arabian Nights and Orientalism written by Tetsuo Nishio and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2006-03-31 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arabian Nights and Orientalism in Resonance was especially commissioned to celebrate the tercentenary of the first Western edition of The Arabian Nights. This volume marries Western and Japanese perspectives on The Arabian Nights to provide a fascinating study of how this literary phenomenon brought about a unique and rich cross-cultural fertilization. The volume is divided into three sections: the first part deals with narrative motifs and styles; the second part examines the 'Nights' from a comparative point of view and the third part unfolds the relationship between the written text and its pictorial representation. Extensively illustrated throughout, The Arabian Nights and Orientalism in Resonance will be of interest to scholars of the Middle East as well as anyone who has ever fallen under the spell of Scheherazade's stories.

Book Long Night s Journey into Day

Download or read book Long Night s Journey into Day written by Charles G. Roland and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sickness, starvation, brutality, and forced labour plagued the existence of tens of thousands of Allied POWs in World War II. More than a quarter of these POWs died in captivity. Long Night’s Journey into Day centres on the lives of Canadian, British, Indian, and Hong Kong POWs captured at Hong Kong in December 1941 and incarcerated in camps in Hong Kong and the Japanese Home Islands. Experiences of American POWs in the Philippines, and British and Australians POWs in Singapore, are interwoven throughout the book. Starvation and diseases such as diphtheria, beriberi, dysentery, and tuberculosis afflicted all these unfortunate men, affecting their lives not only in the camps during the war but after they returned home. Yet despite the dispiriting circumstances of their captivity, these men found ways to improve their existence, keeping up their morale with such events as musical concerts and entertainments created entirely within the various camps. Based largely on hundreds of interviews with former POWs, as well as material culled from archives around the world, Professor Roland details the extremes the prisoners endured — from having to eat fattened maggots in order to live to choosing starvation by trading away their skimpy rations for cigarettes. No previous book has shown the essential relationship between almost universal ill health and POW life and death, or provides such a complete and unbiased account of POW life in the Far East in the 1940s.

Book Brocade by Night

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Stanford University Press

  • Pages : 608 pages

Download or read book Brocade by Night written by and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1985-10 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Kokin Wakashū' (Collection of Early and Modern Japanese Poetry) is one of the world's earliest and most important poetic anthologies. It consists of over 1,000 poems, almost all of which were probably written between the last half of the eighth century and 905, the approximate date of the work's compilation. This is the first full-scale study in English of Kokinshū (as it is usually called), the anthology that fixed the basic style of Japanese poetry, and in so doing defined the aesthetics of an entire literary tradition. Kokinshū cannot be appreciated without some knowledge of Chinese poetry and its influence on Japanese writers, Heian aesthetics ideals, the aims of the anthology's poets and compilers, the expectations of the intended audience, and the nature of Heian society. Brocade by Night attempts to provide the necessary perspective by discussing the Chinese poetry known to the Japanese, the characteristics of early Japanese composition in both Chinese and Japanese, and the social and literary atmosphere out of which Kokinshū arose. The author also discusses the content and form of typical Kokinshū poems, the structure of the anthology, and the question of individuality in a genre of convention. The role of Kokinshū principal compiler, Ki no Tsurayuki, is described, and the author examines two of Tsurayuki's other works, Tosa nikki and Shinsen waka. A companion volume, 'Kokin Wakashū', The First Imperial Anthology of Japanese Poetry, consists of new translations of Kokinshū and Tosa nikki and the first translation in any language of Shinsen waka
