Book excerpt: On a U.S. military base near Fallujah in war-torn Iraq, Col. John Folsom woke up one morning to the sound of a small, scruffy donkey tied up outside his quarters. He was charmed by this scrawny animal with a plaintive expression. Folsom and his fellow Marines took in the donkey, built him a corral and shelter, and escorted him on daily walks. One night, hanging out with the Marines as they relaxed after work, the donkey snatched someone’s lit cigarette and gobbled it up, to the laughter of all. Suddenly, the donkey had a name: Smoke. More than a conversation topic for troops connecting with families back home, Smoke served as mascot, ambassador, and battle buddy. Smoke the Donkey recounts the strong friendship between Colonel Folsom and this stray donkey and the massive challenges of reuniting Smoke with Folsom in the United States following Folsom’s retirement. After being given to a local sheik, Smoke wandered the desert before Folsom rallied an international team to take him on a convoluted journey to his new home. The team won a protracted bureaucratic battle to move Smoke from Iraq to Turkey, only to face a tougher fight getting him out of Turkey. Once in the States, Smoke became a beloved therapy animal for both children and veterans. Smoke’s story, while tinged with sadness, speaks to the enduring bond between a man and an animal, unbroken by war, distance, or red tape.

Book excerpt: Virginia is for lovers, but in the heartless and unforgiving streets of Virginias 7even Cities: where disillusioned hustlers pitch narcotics on project blocks without a conscience, disgruntled stick up kids terrorize the streets with their ambitions attached to ski masks and twin pistols, and dispirited young females strip themselves of their self-worth and sell their most sacred possessions all for a piece of the Devils Pie, love is an ideal often spoke about, but seldom seen. The 7even Cities, where the disenfranchised take to the streets to obtain the American Dream of lavish homes, luxury automobiles, and tailored garments, while the aristocracy relentlessly aim to squander their hopes with oppressive laws and a multi-million dollar penal system. This is Virginia through the clairvoyant eyes of Marquis Cream Cureton in his classic debut novel, When the Smoke Clears: An Urban Novel. Inspired by true events, Cream narrates the story of Secoya Smoke Harris, a promising college basketball player with ambitions as vast as the oceans are blue, who tip-toed the fine line between success and the streets. Originally from the gang infested streets of Compton, California, Smoke cant resist the lure of the underworld of the 7even Cities, and in one costly decision finds himself incarcerated in Virginias Department of Corrections and marked for death by his big homie. His basketball career ruined and future bleak, Smoke apprehensively makes the decision to dive head first into the streets and get money the only way he sees possibletrafficking marijuana. Beef inevitable, bodies dropping, and indictments looming, Smoke drowns himself in a cloud of haze from the finest bud California has to offer in order to escape the harsh reality that in the streets nothing last forever, and no one ever wins; there are only those that survive the game and live to tell about it behind penitentiary walls, and those that lose, taking their last breath in the streets. Which side will Smoke find himself? Only God knows, When the Smoke Clears.

Book excerpt: A Night Sea Journey In this latest collection Adrian G R Scott has drawn on his experience of the physical and mental breakdown which he suffered three and half years ago to explore what CG Jung called the night sea journey. In the title poem Adrian writes of a visit to the Accident & Emergency Department of Sheffields Northern General Hospital, suffering from palpitations, as being part of his own night sea journey. In this book he sets up a creative dialogue between his experiences and the stories of mythology and also with other figures who have navigated their own dark ocean passages. He begins with poems that come from before his breakdown celebrating the everyday routines of holidays, marriages and anniversaries, and his sense of coming of age as a poet. These finally culminate in a funeral poem for a friends wife written at the point when his own night sea journey really began. From there he launches into a series of poems charting his entry into darkness and the jaws of physical and mental breakdown. These are poems that come from the belly of the beast and there is also a short fairy tale telling the story of an encounter with a darker part of himself. These lead into poems of recuperation and recovery, poems that draw on such themes as how to befriend and walk with anxiety and depression. Two cycles of poems follow, one reflecting on Francis of Assisi and the other on the artist Vincent Van Gogh. Both had profound night sea journeys and the writer enters into a dialogue with these challenging phases of their lives. The final section is an accommodation with life after breakdown; the poetry of continuation, as life reshapes itself. This last section is imbued with a sense of cautious hope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A giant grizzly on a killer rampage terrorizes a small ranch community--and lures legendary mountain man Smoke Jensen into the deadliest trap of all: the human kind . . . . JOHNSTONE COUNTRY. HUNT OR BE HUNTED. The bear seems harmless--at first. Just a lost and confused grizzly poking around Big Rock. Then the killings begin. A horse wrangler is mangled. A rancher mauled. Then a bartender in the heart of town is found clawed to a bloody pulp. Now every man in Big Rock is taking up arms to hunt down the beast before it strikes again--which worries the local sheriff. He's afraid this amateur hunting party could turn into a mass funeral real fast. So he asks Smoke Jensen to help keep everyone calm and contain the panic. Unfortunately, it's too late. The panic is out of control. And the hunt is on. . . . While the gun-toting locals head for the hills in search of the bear, a ruthless gang of bank robbers ride into the half-empty town--armed to the teeth. Then a professional wild game hunter shows up offering to kill the grizzly--for a price. If that wasn't enough, a traveling medicine man claims the bear is part of his act--and wouldn't hurt a soul. Smoke Jensen isn't sure what to believe or who to trust. But one thing is certain: Where there are jaws, claws, and outlaws, there will be blood. . . .
