Book A Thousand Thoughts in Flight

Download or read book A Thousand Thoughts in Flight written by Maria Gabriela Llansol and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-16 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable collection of diary entries from cross-genre Portuguese author Maria Gabriela Llansol, which span dozens of diaries and 33 years. "She dedicated herself to this work regularly, at the same time, in the same place, and in almost the same position…” (The Book of Communities). Over the course of her life, Maria Gabriela Llansol wrote many thousands of pages. She left behind 70 diaries in all, which began in November 1974 and continued until 2007. Three of them were published during her lifetime. Diary I begins the day she finishes The Book of Communities and ends the day she finishes The Remaining Life, in 1977. Diary II picks up two years later, when she is finishing In the House of July and August and beginning the second trilogy. It follows her through the second trilogy and captures her first ideas for the Lisbonleipzig duology; it is here where Bach and Pessoa begin their encounter, in 1982. Diary III is less a diary than a mourning of the death of her friend, the Portuguese writer Virgílio Ferreira, one of the only contemporary writers with whom she felt any affinity, a mapping of their relationship and a conversation between them.

When she sees the dust cloud on the horizon she knows he has arrived. She knows he will want the loveliest girl: her sister. She vows she will not let her be next. And so she is taken in her sister's place, and she believes death will soon follow. But back in their village her sister is mourning. Through her pain, she calls upon the desert winds, conjuring a subtle unseen magic, and something besides death stirs the air in it's place. Lo-Melkhiin's court is a dangerous palace filled with pretty things: intricate statues with wretched eyes, exquisite threads to weave the most beautiful garments. She sees everything as if for the last time. But the first sun sets and rises, and she is not dead. Night after night Lo-Melkhiin comes to her, and listens to the stories she tells and day after day she is awoken by the sunrise. Exploring the palace, she begins to unlock years of fear that have tormented and silenced a kingdom. Lo-Melkhiin was not always a cruel ruler. Something went wrong. The words she speaks to him every night are given strange life of their own. She makes things appear. Little things, at first: a dress from home, a vision of her sister. With each tale she spins, her power grows. Soon she dreams of bigger, more terrible magic: power enough to save a king, if she can put an end to rule of a monster.

Book Treatise on the Human Mind 1666

Download or read book Treatise on the Human Mind 1666 written by Louis de la Forge and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Descartes' philosophy represented one of the most explicit statements of mind-body dualism in the history of philosophy. Its most familiar expression is found in the Meditations (1641) and in Part I of The Principles 0/ Philosophy (1644). However neither of these books provided a detailed discussion of dualism. The Meditations was primarily concerned with finding a foundation for reliable human knowledge, while the Principles attempted to provide an alternative metaphysical framework, in contrast with scholastic philosophy, within which natural philosophy or a scien tific explanation of natural phenomena could be developed. Thus neither book ex plicitly presents a Cartesian theory of the mind nor does either give a detailed account of how, if dualism were accepted, mind and body would interact. The task of articulating such a theory was left to two further works, only one of which was completed by Descartes, viz. the Treatise on Man (published posthumously in 1664). The Treatise began with the following sentence, describing the hypothetical human beings who were to be explained in that work: 'These human beings will be com posed, as we are, of a soul and a body; and, first of all, I must describe the body for you separately; then, also separately, the soul; and fmally I must show you how these two natures would have to be joined and united to constitute human beings resembling us.

Book Those Who Came to Die

Download or read book Those Who Came to Die written by Kwame Toshambe and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most stories start with the words In the beginning, something happened a long time ago. There was a great country, and if we could turn back the clock and watch the years, months, and days go idly by, we could make time do our bidding. We could start with the Assyrians, Babylonians, Julius Caesar, and Cleopatra. Maybe we will find out why the Sphinx was built and who is entombed within it. There are a number of other dynasties that were created by time, and those who rose to power and then by the magic of time were only names written in some history book that some researcher may read on some sunny afternoon in a classroom, in a library or maybe archived in a distant land, where one or many are doing research into the rise and fall of those who wanted to rule over the dreams of others and perhaps we might end up with. Who knows, with more than just a thought. With great power comes great responsibility and challenges for the future. During that time of the building of a nation, there are many problems externally and internally. That nation, endowed by its victories over tyranny and regimes that rule with fear and intimidation, can only survive if those who fought for the freedoms somehow gave them up to the few who want power all for themselves. And from the Bible, Greater hath no man than those who would give their lives for their fellow man. Greater love for liberty and the pursuit of what makes the populous happy. Sometimes the leaders of the populous wants what somebody else has or they want to force upon them, their beliefs (Manifestos). I read something that I would like to quote: Better to be poor with integrity than rich and crooked in ones ways, desire without knowledge is not good and whoever acts hastily blunders.

Book excerpt: Who would have ever thought that a stroll back through ones childhood neighborhood would have opened the door to the very real existence of another realm of life hidden behind the scenes of our lives? Thats exactly what happened as I walked back to visit the simplicity of yesterday, only to face again what I thought was the great dichotomy of today. On that ordinary park bench, on that not-so-long-ago morning, my life was forever transformed. For it was there that the unveiling of a connection to a phenomenal power and supernatural ability took me on a journey into incredible insights, powers, and the miraculous healing that exists in the center of all mankind. And it was also there that I first encountered the Voice. I was shown the purpose of time and the great secret it holds. Visions and songs and strangers revealed insights that kept taking me further into the great ascending truth thats been hidden in the midst of us the whole time. Dreams became avenues of incredible wisdom. Laughter and tears carried me through realms of experiences. This is the very thing weve been looking for throughout all of our existence. As the journey comes full circle, any mysteries of life fade into the simplicity thats been revealed and that has been with us the whole entire time. This is meant to be our home, and now we know it.

Book excerpt: When a beautiful princess refuses to marry the prince her father has chosen, her father is furious and locks her in a tower. She has seven long years of solitude to think about her insolence. But the princess is not entirely alone - she has her maid, Dashti. Petulant and spoilt, the princess eats the food in their meagre store as if she were still at court, and Dashti soon realises they must either escape or slowly starve. But during their captivity, resourceful Dashti discovers that there is something far more sinister behind her princess's fears of marrying the prince, and when they do break free from the tower, they find a land laid to waste and the kingdom destroyed. They were safe in the tower, now they are at the mercy of the evil prince with a terrible secret. Thrilling, captivating, and a masterful example of storytelling at its best. The princess's maid is a feisty and thoroughly modern heroine, in this wonderfully timeless story.
