Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Subject A little explanation is in order for our choice of the title Linear Opti- 1 mization (and corresponding terminology) for what has traditionally been called Linear Programming.Theword programming in this context can be confusing and/or misleading to students. Linear programming problems are referred to as optimization problems but the general term linear p- gramming remains. This can cause people unfamiliar with the subject to think that it is about programming in the sense of writing computer code. It isn’t. This workbook is about the beautiful mathematics underlying the ideas of optimizing linear functions subject to linear constraints and the algorithms to solve such problems. In particular, much of what we d- cuss is the mathematics of Simplex Algorithm for solving such problems, developed by George Dantzig in the late 1940s. The word program in linear programming is a historical artifact. When Dantzig ?rstdevelopedthe Simplex Algorithm to solvewhat arenowcalled linear programming problems, his initial model was a class of resource - location problems to be solved for the U.S. Air Force. The decisions about theallocationswerecalled‘Programs’bytheAirForce, andhencetheterm.

Book Biological Control by Augmentation of Natural Enemies

Download or read book Biological Control by Augmentation of Natural Enemies written by R. Ridgway and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The protection of agricultural crops, forest, and man and his domestic animals from annoyance and damage by various kinds of pests remains a chronic problem. As we endeavor to improve pro duction processes and to develop more effective and acceptable tactics for achieving this protection, we must give high priority to all potentially useful techniques for the control and management of insects. Pest control is recognized as an acceptable and necessary part of modern agriculture. Methods employed vary greatly and tend to reflect compromises involving 3 determining factors: technological capability, economic feasibility, and social acceptability. How ever, these factors are also subject to change with time since each involves value judgments that are based on available information, cost, benefit considerations, the seriousness of the pest problem, and the political climate. Whatever method is chosen, energy resources continue to dwindle under the impact of increasing popu lation, and it is inevitable that greater reliance must be placed upon renewable resources in pest management. One alternative is the use of a pest management method that uses the energy of the pest's own biomass to fuel a self-perpetuating control system. The use of biological control agents for the control of pests has long been an integral part of the pest management strategy in crop production and forestry and in the protection of man and animals. The importance and unique advantages of the method are well recognized; numerous treatises deal with accomplishments and methodologies.

Book A City Lost and Found

Download or read book A City Lost and Found written by Robyn Annear and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Old landmarks fall in nearly every block ... and the face of the city is changing so rapidly that the time is not too far distant when a search for a building 50 years old will be in vain.” — Herald, 1925. The demolition firm of Whelan the Wrecker was a Melbourne institution for a hundred years (1892-1992). Its famous sign – ‘Whelan the Wrecker is Here’ on a pile of shifting rubble – was a laconic masterpiece and served as a vital sign of the city’s progress. It’s no stretch to say that over three generations, the Whelan family changed the face of Melbourne, demolishing hundreds of buildings in the central city alone. In A City Lost and Found, Robyn Annear uses Whelan’s demolition sites as portals to explore layers of the city laid bare by their pick-axes and iron balls. Peering beneath the rubble, she brings to light fantastic stories about Melbourne’s building sites and their many incarnations. This is a book about the making – and remaking – of a city.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Huge amount of information is available about Hindi films on the internet. Unfortunately, not all of it is reliable. Mistakes range from honest clerical errors to outright made-up interviews with famous people. In this book the author describes his real interactions with Hindi film actresses who were active in the 40s to 60s. Most had been away from the industry for a long time and were living anonymously. The author made great effort to seek them out and interviewed them. He has obtained much rare and authentic information, clarifying many misconceptions and finding elaborations of other well-known facts about them. We hope that the readers will enjoy reading about them as much as the author has writing about the interviews.

Book Cricketing Caesar

Download or read book Cricketing Caesar written by Mark Peel and published by . This book was released on 2020-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mike Brearley was one of England's greatest cricket captains. He thrice won the Ashes, including the unforgettable series of 1981, when his leadership helped England to snatch victory from defeat. Yet there was nothing inevitable about his rise. A spell out of the game in his mid-20s stymied his progress and when he returned full-time to captain Middlesex, his innovative approach found little favour with the old guard. In this first-ever biography of Brearley, cricket writer Mark Peel reveals how Brearley overcame his critics to lead Middlesex to four county championships and two Gillette Cup wins. His rise to the England captaincy was fast, but his unrivalled leadership skills contrasted with his repeated failures with the bat. Away from cricket, Brearley possessed a range of cultural interests along with a sharp intellect, which saw him achieve eminence as a psychoanalyst. Drawing on interviews with friends and team-mates, Peel assesses the many facets of this complex man to explain his phenomenal success as a leader.
