Book Defence Policy of Nigeria Capability and Context

Download or read book Defence Policy of Nigeria Capability and Context written by Charles Quarker Dokubo and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-01-20 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Reader provides a structurally coherent explanation and review of the magnified role conception and organizational task expansion for the Nigerian military establishment in foreign policy. It argues essentially that one of the most problematic and intractable areas of public policy in Nigeria since the Civil War concerns the development of a professional defence establishment adequate to meet the challenges arising from the altered parameters of iour security environment. The correction of this condition is the primary motivation of the Armed Forces modernization and augmentation program that touches upon all elements of Nigeria's military power. This Reader is at once a review and a critique of the major facets of this modernization and augmentation process of the Nigerian armed forces within the operative context of the changing dimension of threat perception and the strategic parameters that have guided Nigerian military planning since the Civil War in 1970.

Book Learning from West African Experiences in Security Sector Governance

Download or read book Learning from West African Experiences in Security Sector Governance written by Alan Bryden and published by Ubiquity Press. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many efforts have been undertaken to address dysfunctional security sector governance in West Africa. However, security sector reform (SSR) has fallen short of radical – transformational – change to the fundamental structures of power and governance in the region. Looking more closely at specific examples of SSR in six West African countries, Learning from West African Experiences in Security Sector Governance explores both progress and reversals in efforts by national stakeholders and their international partners to positively influence security sector governance dynamics. Written by eminent national experts based on their personal experiences of these reform contexts, this study offers new insights and practical lessons that should inform processes to improve democratic security sector governance in West Africa and beyond.

Book Corruption Risks in Nigeria S Defence and Security Establishments

Download or read book Corruption Risks in Nigeria S Defence and Security Establishments written by Jude Uddoh Ph.D. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work attempts to assess corruption risks in five key areas of Nigerias defence and security establishments, namely political, financial, personnel, operations, and procurement. Using a simple and straightforward question-and-answer format, the assessment draws from interviews with key players in the industry as well as from secondary sources. The scope of the work includes the last few years of President Goodluck Jonathans administration and the threshold of the administration of President Muhammadu Buharia truly epochal period in the history of Nigerias fight against corruption, but also reflects policy gaps inherent in the transition in government. The work contributes to an area of literature which is both scanty and characterized by much secrecy. It is hoped therefore that this contribution will not only stimulate more frank and open discussion on the subject of corruption risks in Nigerias defence and security sector, but would also act as both a template and benchmark on which policy makers can embark on genuine and meaningful reforms.

Book Counter Insurgency in Nigeria

Download or read book Counter Insurgency in Nigeria written by Akali Omeni and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a detailed examination of the counter-insurgency operations undertaken by the Nigerian military against Boko Haram between 2011 and 2017. Based on extensive fieldwork conducted with military units in Nigeria, Counter-Insurgency in Nigeria has two main aims. First, it seeks to provide an understanding of the Nigerian military’s internal role – a role that today, as a result of internal threats, pivots towards counter-insurgency. The book illustrates how organizational culture, historical experience, institutions, and doctrine, are critical to understanding the Nigerian military and its attitudes and actions against the threat of civil disobedience, today and in the past. The second aim of the book is to examine the Nigerian military campaign against Boko Haram insurgents – specifically, plans and operations between June 2011 and April 2017. Within this second theme, emphasis is placed on the idea of battlefield innovation and the reorganization within the Nigerian military since 2013, as the Nigerian Army and Air Force recalibrated themselves for COIN warfare. A certain mystique has surrounded the technicalities of COIN operations by the Army against Boko Haram, and this book aims to disperse that veil of secrecy. Furthermore, the work’s analysis of the air force’s role in counter-insurgency is unprecedented within the literature on military warfare in Nigeria. This book will be of great interest to students of military studies, counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, African politics and security studies in general.

Book Security Challenges and Management in Modern Nigeria

Download or read book Security Challenges and Management in Modern Nigeria written by Abimbola Adesoji and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays explores the critical and fluid nature of security challenges that have plagued Nigeria since colonial times. Insecurity in diverse forms remains the bane of growth and progressive development in the country, and has the capability to derail a society no matter how sophisticated. What has generated insecurity at the macro- and micro-levels? How has insecurity been tackled? Why have security challenges escalated particularly in the post-independence period? What lessons could be learnt from the way security matters have been (mis)handled in the past? This volume presents chapters on the historical roots and antecedents of security challenges, and considers the nexus between the economy, political leadership and development, and its impacts on security in modern Nigeria. It also explores the effectiveness of the strategies employed to address security challenges, and discusses why some security challenges have lingered.

Book The Palgrave Handbook of Small Arms and Conflicts in Africa

Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Small Arms and Conflicts in Africa written by Usman A. Tar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-05 with total page 1043 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides critical analyses of the theory and practices of small arms proliferation and its impact on conflicts and organized violence in Africa. It examines the terrains, institutions, factors and actors that drive armed conflict and arms proliferation, and further explores the nature, scope, and dynamics of conflicts across the continent, as well as the extent to which these conflicts are exacerbated by the proliferation of small arms. The volume features rich analyses by contributors who are acquainted with, and widely experienced in, the formal and informal structures of arms proliferation and control, and their repercussions on violence, instability and insecurity across Africa. The chapters dissect the challenges of small arms and light weapons in Africa with a view to understanding roots causes and drivers, and generating a fresh body of analyses that adds value to the existing conversation on conflict management and peacebuilding in Africa. With contributions from scholars, development practitioners, defence and security professionals and civil society activists, the handbook seeks to serve as a reference for students, researchers, and policy makers on small arms proliferation, control and regulation; defence and security practitioners; and those involved in countering violence and managing conflicts in Africa.

Book A History of the Republic of Biafra

Download or read book A History of the Republic of Biafra written by Samuel Fury Childs Daly and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of Biafra lasted for less than three years, but the war over its secession would contort Nigeria for decades to come. Samuel Fury Childs Daly examines the history of the Nigerian Civil War and its aftermath from an uncommon vantage point – the courtroom. Wartime Biafra was glutted with firearms, wracked by famine, and administered by a government that buckled under the weight of the conflict. In these dangerous conditions, many people survived by engaging in fraud, extortion, and armed violence. When the fighting ended in 1970, these survival tactics endured, even though Biafra itself disappeared from the map. Based on research using an original archive of legal records and oral histories, Daly catalogues how people navigated conditions of extreme hardship on the war front, and shows how the conditions of the Nigerian Civil War paved the way for the country's long experience of crime that was to follow.
