Book excerpt: Nietzsche, Maeterlinck, Strindberg, and Tolstoy, the four great authors discussed in this book stand, respectively, for the determining strains in a great upsetting movement, and that in the aggregate they bring to view the composite mental and moral impulsion of the times. They are, one and all, radicals in thought, and, with differing strength of intention, reformers of society, inasmuch as their speculations and aspirations are relevant to practical problems of living.

Book Prophets of Dissent Essays on Maeterlinck Strindberg Nietzsche and Tolstoy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Prophets of Dissent Essays on Maeterlinck Strindberg Nietzsche and Tolstoy Classic Reprint written by Otto Heller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prophets of Dissent: Essays on Maeterlinck, Strindberg, Nietzsche, and Tolstoy Here they are, my fifty Men and Women Authors, arranged alphabetically, from Ade (George) to Zangwill (Israel). If, reader, you find some of your favourites omitted, please remember that there was a former book called Authors and I. This new volume, most of which was written in America, is named, naturally, More Authors and I. For I was allowed to acquire the habit of writing these studies, week by week, for The Christian Science Monitor, and as, Mr. Frederick Dixon, then Editor of that excellent journal, liked them, and after Authors and I was published said encouragingly, Carry on, I continued to write about the authors to whom I reacted, for some reason or another, at the moment, even such far-away figures as George Eliot and Herbert Spencer. And I am doing it still. For authors (and their vicissitudes) are many and persistent, and new ways of regarding them open unceasingly, like new dawns. Book excerpt: The collocation of authors so widely at variance in their moral and artistic aims as are those assembled in this little book may be defended by the safe and simple argument that all of these authors have exerted, each in his own way, an influence of singular range and potency. By fairly general consent they are the foremost literary expositors of important modern tendencies. It is, therefore, of no consequence whether or not their ways of thinking fit into our particular frame of mind; what really matters is that in this small group of writers more clearly perhaps than in any other similarly restricted group the basic issues of the modern struggle for social transformation appear to be clearly and sharply joined. That in viewing them as indicators of contrarious ideal currents due allowance must be made for peculiarities of temperament, both individual and racial, and, correspondingly, for the purely "personal equation" in their spiritual attitudes, does not detract to any material degree from their generic significance.

Book Beyond Good and Evil

    Book Details:
  • Author : Friedrich Nietzsche

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Good and Evil is a collection of essays and aphorisms in which Friedrich Nietzsche expresses his desire for a 'transvaluation of all values.' He contends that no human values are absolute; that all value distinctions (such as that between 'good' and 'evil') are artificial, the result of mere traditional prejudices; and that humanity should discard its old, outmoded values (such as 'good' and 'evil').

Book An International Annotated Bibliography of Strindberg Studies 1870 2005 General studies

Download or read book An International Annotated Bibliography of Strindberg Studies 1870 2005 General studies written by Michael Robinson and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This copiously annotated bibliography documents and examines the whole range of commentary on Strindberg's works and activity in many fields besides the plays for which he is internationally best known. These include his prose fiction and poetry, his work as an historian and natural historian, and his relationship to the other arts, most notably his painting. It is concerned with both lasting works of literary and dramatic criticism, as well as reviews of his books and plays in the theatre, and some more ephemeral material, all of this in several languages. Organised generically and by subject and individual work, the bibliography enables the reader to trace the changing impact of Strindberg and his works in various countries and during different periods. It is thus very much a study in reception as well as a bibliographical record of published material. It traces the developing image of Strindberg and his writing both during his lifetime and in subsequent years, and with frequent cross reference offers a comprehensive overview of a literary and existential project that has rarely been matched for its multifaceted diversity. The bibliography is published in three parts. Volume 2, The Plays (978-0-947623-82-1) and Volume 3, Prose, Poetry, Miscellaneous (978-0-947623-83-8) are also now available. Michael Robinson is Emeritus Professor of Drama and Scandinavian Studies at the University of East Anglia, Norwich.
