Jedes Gesicht war ihm irgendwie liebenswürdig vorgekommen, keine Spur Vorteilsucht oder Betrug, nur Sympathie, die Sympathie erwidert, vor allem bei jungen Leuten und älteren Junggesellen, höheren Schülern und Offizieren, in Trattorien wie in luxuriösen Cafés ein unglaubliches Entgegenkommen, auch bei den Preisen, abends im Lichterglanz Musik ohne Aufpreis, hübsch, frivol und simpel und doch voll Noblesse, wie es sich für eine Residenz gehörte. Eine kapitale Entdeckung, dieses Turin. Der erste Ort, an dem er möglich war.
