Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master Nicholas of Amsterdam was a prominent master of arts in Germany during the first half of the fifteenth century. He composed various commentaries on Aristotle’s works. One of these commentaries is on the logica vetus, the old logic, viz. on Porphyry’s Isagoge and on Aristotle’s Categories and On Interpretation. This commentary is edited and introduced here. Nicholas is a ‘modernus’ – as opposed to the ‘antiqui’, who were realists – which means that he is a conceptualist belonging to the university tradition that accepted John Buridan (ca. 1300-1360 or 1361) and Marsilius of Inghen (ca. 1340-1396) as its masters. In medieval philosophy, a parallel between thinking and reality is generally upheld. Nicholas makes a sharp distinction between the two; this may be interpreted as a step towards a separation between the two realms, as is common in philosophy in later centuries. Other characteristics of Nicholas are that he defends the position that science has its place in a proposition, and does not simply follow reality. Furthermore, he emphasizes the part played by individual things. Fifteenth-century philosophy has hardly been studied, mainly because that century has long been considered unoriginal. Nicholas of Amsterdam certainly deserves the historian’s interest in order to evaluate how medieval philosophy prepared the way for modern philosophy.

Book excerpt: In this classic mystery, a Dutch police detective investigates a woman’s murder with assistance from the man accused of killing her. A woman, Elsa, is brutally murdered in her Amsterdam apartment. Her ex-lover, Martin, is seen outside the building around the time of the crime. The witness who saw him? A policeman. It looks like a straightforward case—but police inspector Van der Valk is not convinced. Despite all the evidence—and the fact that Martin originally denied he was at the apartment—he believes Martin is not guilty of murder. Instead of charging him, Van der Valk takes him on a tour: a tour of the investigation, a tour of Martin’s own past and a tour into the darkly obsessive world of Elsa . . . NOW A LIMITED SERIES ON MASTERPIECE PBS Praise for Nicolas Freeling and Van der Valk “Freeling’s Inspector Van der Valk is less rugged than Rebus, less parsonical than Dalgliesh, more Morse than Frost, and more Maigret than any of them. Marvelous.” —Anita Brookner “[Freeling] has given the detective story new dimensions much as John Le Carré has done for the spy novel.” —Newsweek

Book BIOGRAPHY of NICHOLAS DAVIS d 1672 RI WITH NEW DISCOVERIES ENDNOTES 3rd Updated Edition

Download or read book BIOGRAPHY of NICHOLAS DAVIS d 1672 RI WITH NEW DISCOVERIES ENDNOTES 3rd Updated Edition written by Dr. Frank "Mike" Davis and published by RootsQuest Press, LLC. This book was released on 2022-02-04 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research paper is to provide a comprehensive biography about the author’s 8th great-grandfather, Nicholas Davis, which includes “new research discoveries” about his life in America, and about his wife, Sarah (Ewer) Blossom Davis. Quaker Nicholas Davis, sometimes of Barnstable, Massachusetts and sometimes of Newport, Rhode Island is an interesting and notable American historical figure for several reasons: As the first Barnstable, Plymouth Colony resident to adopt the Quaker faith in 1659 CE, Nicholas “survived” severe persecutions legislated by both Plymouth Colony and Massachusetts Bay Colony governments. He was imprisoned twice with other Quakers who were later hanged to death in Boston because of their faith. Despite these hardships, and the tragic, sudden death of his 2-year-old-son, Nicholas was able to “thrive” in New England. According to Quakerism’s founder, George Fox, Davis had a “great family” comprised of his wife, Sarah, and six children. Nicholas Davis served as a “role model” for his neighbors, showing them how to treat the local “Wampanoag” Native Americans with utmost respect. In 1660 CE, the Wampanoag “Chief” John Yanno “gifted” Nicholas a valuable parcel of land that later became “Hyannis”, Massachusetts; and From 1643 CE until his death in 1672 CE, Nicholas was an international “merchant mariner” who traded goods with people, some of differing nationalities, throughout America and England. In an era filled with unscrupulous businessmen, Nicholas Davis maintained his good reputation by “dealing honestly” with all persons, and for donating some of his time and money “for the public interest”.
