Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any veteran who served on active duty during the Korean and Vietnam Wars quickly learned that the U.S. military had its own unique language. It was a combination of acronyms, technical jargon and a considerable sprinkling of vulgarities. “Nice Talk, GI,” is a compilation of terminology used, overheard, or encountered by the author during his service with the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971. An invaluable resource was the author's own “Soldier Notebooks,” kept during BCT and AIT. Also, while stationed in Korea, he served with a number of Vietnam War Veterans, and learned a significant amount of technology from them. An invaluable source was provided by access to Pacific Stars & Stripes newspaper from the era. While the work does not claim to be definitive, it is representative of terminology used by military personnel between 1950 and 1975.

But in December 1944, in the Ardennes Forest, the Germans launch a ruthless counteroffensive that begins the Battle of the Bulge. The Führer will spare nothing to preserve his twisted vision of a “Thousand Year Reich,” but stout American resistance defeats the German thrust. No Less Than Victory is a riveting account presented through the eyes of Eisenhower, Patton, and the soldiers who struggled face-to-face with their enemy, as well as from the vantage point of Germany’s old soldier, Gerd von Rundstedt, and Hitler’s golden boy, Albert Speer. Jeff Shaara carries the reader on a journey that defines the spirit of the soldier and the horror of a madman’s dreams.

Book Ndyuka

Download or read book Ndyuka written by George L. Huttar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-01 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes what is perhaps the most thorough description of a creole language to date. Following the Descriptive Grammar Series outline, it provides detailed coverage of a full range of grammatical, phonological and lexical information, written with the interests of formalists and functionalists, creolists and students of language universals and typology in mind. Expressions of lin-uistic judgements by both native and trained native speakers of Ndyuka combine with close study of texts to provide a solid basis for the work. More than two thousand examples of constructions and forms are considered in context and these give the careful reader a rich picture of all the stuctural and functional aspects of this radical creole. The authors' close acquaintance with the Ndyuka language community spans more than 25 years and allows the intuitions of Ndyuka speakers to show through clearly. Numerous cross references and an index of forms and topics of special interest supplement the detailed table of contents, facilitating the testing of hypotheses on language universals, typology, creolization, and processes such as clefting, relativization and verb serialization.

Upon arrival in Korea, he quickly grasped the contradictory tenets of neo-Confucian Korean versus American laws and customs; in a jam what do you do? Follow American or Korean laws or culture? Book The Beginning of August and Other Plays

Download or read book The Beginning of August and Other Plays written by Tom Donaghy and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These four plays prove The Village Voice's acclaim that Tom Donaghy has "mastered the Chekhovian tactic of having people say everything except what's on their mind." From the story of a young man trying to find order in a world in which he's had an affair with another man days after his wife left him and their infant daughter, to the emotional undercurrents of quiet, hard-working families faced with the reality that the lives they had envisioned for themselves are vastly different than the ones they are living, The Beginning of August and Other Plays showcases Donaghy's exceptional ability to bring to the surface the emotional undercurrents of everyday people. "Tom Donaghy has that marvelous ability to be acutely funny and moving at the same time. Tom Donaghy's plays reveal a truth not only about good writing but why good playwriting reveals a complexity impossible in any other form. These are masterful works." -- Wendy Wasserstein, author of The Heidi Chronicles; "Donaghy is a genius with fragmentation, with details so small that it comes as a shock to discover how sufficient they really are. Like the wiry pins piercing a grenade's shell, his scenes have similar -- and far more dangerous -- energy." -- The Boston Globe; "Tom Donaghy's plays are tender and lyrical: he has an acute eye and a sharp ear. He explores the everyday lives of ordinary Americans and makes them glow. His work is often moving and always beautiful." -- Andre Bishop, Artistic Director, Lincoln Center Theater.

But then--then they began stealing morphine, and after that they began swapping mates, and after that... Finally the lights went out. And a modern-day miracle of streamlined engineering was turned into a cage of evil, human beings become beasts, and for three days the meaning of civilization was forgotten, and carnality ruled!

Book excerpt: "We Never Said Good-Bye: Memoirs of a Bombardier from World War II" is the wartime memoir of Jack I. Moore, who flew 36 missions in the Pacific in the final year of World War II. For his service, Moore earned a Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross, and five Air Medals. It is a story of triumph and tragedy, and one of the last memoirs from a member of the Greatest Generation. Moore's candid chronicle is an honest look at personal struggles and achievements. It is a story of Purple Hearts, Iwo Jima, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, of disease, kamikazes, family, life, fathers and sons, mothers, birth, death, war, loss, faith, atheism, quiet joy, fear, bomb runs and jazz bands, courage, heroism, and even occasional stupidity. From the bitterly cold winter morning when he leaves his Minneapolis home in 1943, to his return at the end of the war, this book celebrates those who served during World War II, while embracing the complex range of emotions and experiences that are unique to a time of war.
