Book Buffaloes by My Bedroom

Download or read book Buffaloes by My Bedroom written by Dennis Herlocker and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-06-23 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dennis Herlocker traveled to Tanganyika as a Peace Corps volunteer expecting to work in a village resettlement program. Instead, he became a forester in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which includes the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater and the eastern Serengeti Plains. He spent the next three years working in one of the most spectacular and interesting places in the world. It was a wonderful place of dramatic landscapes, milling herds of migratory herbivores, and Maasai pastoralists who lived much as they had hundreds of years ago. Dennis had close (and sometimes scary) encounters with wildlife. His colleagues were an intriguing mix of national and ethnic groups. He fell in love and married. It was the most enjoyable time of his life. Come along on the adventure of a lifetime and discover the beauty and excitement of an Africa that can only be discovered by living amongst her people and places.

Book Riding the Wind of Change

Download or read book Riding the Wind of Change written by Peter Hardy and published by Grosvenor House Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After five years working in Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, and South Africa, I decided to return to London overland from Johannesburg, 9000 miles. Early in 1960 I hitchhiked with a Jewish friend to Nairobi, East Africa. From there I continued alone. David wanted to avoid the Moslem lands. From Uganda the Nile carried me to the Sudan, where primitive Nilotic people greeted me. In Egypt I explored the temples of Ramses II carved out of a cliff at Abu Simbel. Later these were relocated avoiding flooding. I hitched through Greece and communist Yugoslavia, eventually returning to my London family, March 1960.

  • Author : Jan Bender Shetler
  • Publisher : Ohio University Press

Download or read book Imagining Serengeti written by Jan Bender Shetler and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-15 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many students come to African history with a host of stereotypes that are not always easy to dislodge. One of the most common is that of Africa as safari grounds—as the land of expansive, unpopulated game reserves untouched by civilization and preserved in their original pristine state by the tireless efforts of contemporary conservationists. With prose that is elegant in its simplicity and analysis that is forceful and compelling, Jan Bender Shetler brings the landscape memory of the Serengeti to life. She demonstrates how the social identities of western Serengeti peoples are embedded in specific spaces and in their collective memories of those spaces. Using a new methodology to analyze precolonial oral traditions, Shetler identifies core spatial images and reevaluates them in their historical context through the use of archaeological, linguistic, ethnographic, ecological, and archival evidence. Imagining Serengeti is a lively environmental history that will ensure that we never look at images of the African landscape in quite the same way.

Book excerpt: This volume offers a unique, integrative perspective on the political and ecological processes shaping landscapes and resource use across the global North and South. Twelve carefully selected case studies demonstrate how contemporary geographical theories and methods can contribute to understanding key environment-and-development issues and working toward effective policies. Topics addressed include water and biodiversity resources, urban and national resource planning, scientific concepts of resource management, and ideas of nature and conservation in the context of globalization. Giving particular attention to evolving conceptions of nature-society interaction and geographical scale, an introduction and conclusion by the editors provide a clear analytical focus for the volume and summarize important developments and debates in the field.

Download or read book Sub Saharan Africa written by Gregory H. Maddox and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-03-24 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wealth of information and analysis on the environmental forces that have helped shaped the cultures of the African continent. A scholarly reference work that will also appeal to the general reader, Sub-Saharan Africa sets the story of the African environment within the context of geological time and shows how the continent's often harsh conditions prompted humans to develop unique skills in agriculture, animal husbandry, and environmental management. Part of ABC-CLIO's Nature and Human Societies series, this book enables readers to better grasp the extent of humanity's effect on our world. Of particular interest are the book's sections dealing with the impact of the Biafran famine of the 1960s, the Sahelian drought of the 1970s, population growth, and the ongoing challenges of war and HIV/AIDS. Crucially, the book also shows how, despite their relative poverty, many African states have coped admirably with rapid urbanization and have developed world-class conservation and sustainability programs in order to protect and harness some of the most endangered species in the world.
