Book Outreach and dissemination of public information to immigrants during the COVID 19 pandemic

Download or read book Outreach and dissemination of public information to immigrants during the COVID 19 pandemic written by Nordic Council of Ministers Secretariat and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2022-12-14 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/nord2022-031/ The Covid-19 pandemic demonstrated the need for public authorities to be prepared for situations where there is a need for communicating to immigrant communities. Effective communication may be achieved in collaboration with civil society and with a longer-term strategy that takes into account the particular needs of the target groups. Civil society organisations and resource persons can provide public authorities with knowledge and understanding of immigrants and with feedback directly transferred from the target group. This is a prerequisite for reaching immigrants with public information and for launching effective communication content. To reach a diverse group of immigrants, then, public organisations need to work continuously to develop strategy, and establish and maintain close relationships with civil society, so they can act when communication needs arise.

Book excerpt: Provides an analytical framework for assessing the impact of NGOs on intergovernmental negotiations on the environment and identifying the factors that determine the degree of NGO influence, with case studies that apply the framework to negotiations on climate change, biosafety, desertification, whaling, and forests. Over the past thirty years nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have played an increasingly influential role in international negotiations, particularly on environmental issues. NGO diplomacy has become, in the words of one organizer, an “international experiment in democratizing intergovernmental decision making.” But there has been little attempt to determine the conditions under which NGOs make a difference in either the process or the outcome of international negotiations. This book presents an analytic framework for the systematic and comparative study of NGO diplomacy in international environmental negotiations. Chapters by experts on international environmental policy apply this framework to assess the effect of NGO diplomacy on specific negotiations on environmental and sustainability issues. The proposed analytical framework offers researchers the tools with which to assess whether and how NGO diplomats affect negotiation processes, outcomes, or both, and through comparative analysis the book identifies factors that explain variation in NGO influence, including coordination of strategy, degree of access, institutional overlap, and alliances with key states. The empirical chapters use the framework to evaluate the degree of NGO influence on the first phase of the Kyoto Protocol negotiations on global climate change, the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, negotiations within the International Whaling Commission that resulted in new management procedures and a ban on commercial whaling, and international negotiations on forests involving the United Nations, the International Tropical Timber Organization, and the World Trade Organization. Book The Hidden Hands of Justice

Download or read book The Hidden Hands of Justice written by Heidi Nichols Haddad and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hidden Hands of Justice: NGOs, Human Rights, and International Courts is the first comprehensive analysis of non-governmental organization (NGO) participation at international criminal and human rights courts. Drawing on original data, Heidi Nichols Haddad maps and explains the differences in NGO participatory roles, frequency, and impact at three judicial institutions: the European Court of Human Rights, the Inter-American Human Rights System, and the International Criminal Court. The Hidden Hands of Justice demonstrates that courts can strategically choose to enhance their functionality by allowing NGOs to provide needed information, expertise, and services as well as shame states for non-cooperation. Through participation, NGOs can profoundly shape the character of international human rights justice, but in doing so, may consolidate civil society representation and relinquish their roles as external monitors.

Book Citizens in Charge

Download or read book Citizens in Charge written by Isabel Licha and published by IDB. This book was released on 2004 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Takes a close look at people's involvement in the new framework of state decentralization. By focusing on the potential as well as the limitations of citizens managing local budgets, the goal is to improve the process of democratization of the state and society. The contributors explore the achievements of the process of decentralization, which is the backdrop for the emerging process of citizen participation in public decisionmaking at the local government level. The volume approaches this issue from a general perspective and up close through case studies. The broad perspective generates a framework for analytical understanding of fiscal decentralization and participation. The case studies highlight local experiences in East Asia - Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines - and Latin America - Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. Each case illustrates a particular leadership style and type of participation. Important similarities emerge in the areas of trust, political will, unity among actors, intergovernmental coordination, capacity of government and citizen organizations to generate participatory public policies, and redistribution of power and responsibility between the state and civil society."--Publisher's web site.

Book Understanding Physician Pharmaceutical Industry Interactions

Download or read book Understanding Physician Pharmaceutical Industry Interactions written by Shaili Jain and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-16 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physician-pharmaceutical industry interactions continue to generate heated debate in academic and public domains, both in the United States and abroad. Despite this, recent research suggests that physicians and physicians-in-training remain uninformed of the core issues and are ill-prepared to understand pharmaceutical industry promotion. Furthermore, few medical curricula address this issue, despite warnings of the imperative need to address this gap in the education of tomorrow's physicians. There is a vast medical literature on this topic, but no single, concise resource. This book aims to fill that gap by providing a resource that explains the essential elements of this subject. The text makes the reader more aware of the key ethical issues and allows the reader to be a more savvy interpreter of industry promotion, have a heightened awareness of the public and medical legal consequences of some physician-pharmaceutical industry interactions, and be better equipped to handle real-life encounters with industry.

Book The Tax Treatment of NGO s

  • Pages : 376 pages

Download or read book The Tax Treatment of NGO s written by Paul Bater and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most national taxation regimes afford certain privileges to non-governmental non-profit organisations of public benefit. However, cross-border extension of such privileges has failed to materialise in any significant way, despite various efforts and the existence of model treaty provisions and even draft NGO multilateral tax treaties. Although experts tend to oppose harmonisation?on the grounds that international privilege would sink to the lowest national level?there does seem to be general agreement that tax incentives to encourage the cross-border activity of public benefit organisations should be clarified and augmented. The expert authors whose work is assembled in this book offer rich perspectives on this issue. Their various analyses include the following: detailed discussion of the objections of principle commonly advanced by states; the role of discrimination legislation in strategies to advance cross-border privilege; the continuing failure of political will to achieve changes in this area of taxation; the potential of reciprocal unilateral action; tax treaties and non-tax treaties with tax-related provisions; multilateral initiatives (OECD, UN, EU, Council of Europe, World Bank, regional treaties); and, Documentation (International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation). Ten of the essays discuss relevant measures in specific countries and regions. The volume includes extensive primary source material, including selected provisions from bilateral tax treaties, national tax arrangements, and the Interphil?s draft for a European Convention on the Tax Treatment of NGOs , as well as full texts of Round Table declarations, and the European Convention on the Recognition of Legal Personality of International NGOs. Quite apart from its importance as an in-depth study of a taxation issue of significant social value, The Tax Treatment of NGOs will be of great assistance to NGOs and their supporters and benefactors. It opens the way to more vigorous lobbying power for the NGO community to influence changes in taxation law and policy. Because this issue promises to soon be one ?whose time has come,? taxation officials and policymakers cannot afford to ignore this book.

Book Tactical Rape in War and Conflict

Download or read book Tactical Rape in War and Conflict written by Fitzpatrick, Brenda and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of rape as a deliberate tactic of war is a serious human rights issue that needs to be addressed as a threat to human and international security. This ground-breaking book is the first to analyse its use as an act of war against civilians and international progress away from tacit acceptance toward active rejection of this violation of international law. Exploring international responses to sexual violence in war, it introduces the main historical facts, theoretical terms and legal developments behind UNSC resolutions on women, peace and security and the emerging practice of international law in this area. It identifies best practice in moving beyond accepting rape in war as inevitable to the recognition of tactical rape as a security concern for women, men, states and the international community. Powerful testimonies of victims are included to bring the issue alive, making this a much-needed volume for academic and professional communities.
