Book excerpt: Newtown changed most dramatically in the period from 1900 to 1960, and Newtown: 1900-1960 captures these changes photographically to show how Newtown became the suburban town with a small-town atmosphere that it is today. The book includes an outstanding array of photographs from three recently discovered collections, including a series on the army maneuvers of 1912, which shows the state of the American army before World War I. Newtown: 1900-1960 begins with the village, which is truly the heart of the town. It focuses on institutions such as the Newtown Savings Bank, which was the business center for almost a century and a half. The book then examines the industrial section of town, Sandy Hook, with businesses that both sustained life and just made life more pleasant. In addition, the book looks at the outlying settlements of Stevenson, Hattertown, Hawleyville, and Riverside, a summer colony that became a year-round place.

Book excerpt: Included in this collection are some of the earliest photographs ever taken of Newtown. In addition, Newtown shows some of the earliest views of the outlying farming and industrial communities such as Berkshire, Botsford, and Hawleyville. Many images also recall the town's career as a resort town--from the earliest Main Street hotels to the teahouses that sprang up as the automobile grew in popularity. We also visit the summer recreation communities that developed on Lake Zoar in the 1920s and 1930s. A whole chapter deals with the pivotal role that the railroad played in the growth of Newtown. In addition, there is considerable coverage of the War Maneuvers of 1912, which were conducted all over the eastern portion of the town and finally centered on Castle Hill just west of Main Street. Newtown includes many photographs newly developed from glass negatives and several recently discovered photographs of great significance. These are all being published here for the first time by Mr. Cruson, a trustee of the Newtown Historical Society, town historian, and president of the Archaeological Society of Connecticut.

Book The Slaves of Central Fairfield County

Download or read book The Slaves of Central Fairfield County written by Daniel Cruson and published by American Heritage. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much attention has been given to the Northern response to the South's peculiar institution of slavery. While the details of anti-slavery activity are well known, the other side of history is neglected: the enslavement, mistreatment and subjugation of slaves who lived and toiled in Northern states. In this ground-breaking book on the slaves of Fairfield County, historian Dan Cruson reveals the harsh reality of slavery in the North that existed alongside anti-slavery activity by presenting a comprehensive picture of rural slavery in 18th and early 19th century Connecticut. From the framework of everyday life including the slave-master relationship, housing and dress, to the role of slaves and free blacks in the Revolution that hastened the demise of slavery in Connecticut, Cruson's accessible and intriguing rendering of slave life in central Fairfield County will fascinate and inform readers. Utilizing local slave archaeology, Cruson presents exciting recent discoveries that shed light on African American spiritual practices. He goes on to tackle the complicated issue of the anti-slavery activity, discussing the problems with the abolition movement in Fairfield County in the 1830s and 1840s and questioning prevalent local folklore about the Underground Railroad.

Book Legendary Locals of Newtown

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Newtown written by Daniel Cruson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception in 1705, Newtown has been an agricultural community at heart. Small, self-sufficient, subsistence farms grew but not substantially enough to overcome competition from the South and Midwest. Men like Ezra Johnson continued to farm until the beginning of the 20th century; others turned to dairy farming, like Israel Nezvesky, or to wholesale nursery operations, like Charles Newman, or to viniculture, like Morgan McLaughlin. Industry made contributions to Newtown's economic landscape in the 19th century through the efforts of William Cole of the New York Belting and Packing Company and Samuel Curtis of Curtis Packaging. James Brunot, developer of Scrabble, and William Upham, inventor of the tea bag, continued to innovate and form Newtown's unique culture. Community commitment thrives today through people like Laurie McCollum, who continues her grandfather's tradition as manager of Lorenzo's Restaurant, and Diane Wardenburg, who carries on Ginny Lathrop's legacy by guiding the Lathrop School of Dance to serve a new generation of aspiring dancers.
