Book excerpt: “A very good book…another side of the wired world of tomorrow.” —Orlando Sentinel Much of the world has enthusiastically embraced the "virtual life," rejecting the cruel realities outside the big lies and shared web fantasies they plug themselves into twenty-four hours a day. American Santee St. John, however, has experienced real, government-imposed horrors in the troubled Mexican state of Chiapas. And along with Margaret Mayfield—his lover and kindred spirit—he has dedicated his life to the rebel cause. Then Santee vanishes into the lush and dangerous wilds of Central America. Though his enemies say Santee St. John is dead, Margaret is determined to find him. But on a planet going rapidly to Hell, the fate of one man of conscience may prove insignificant—as Margaret's search sets her on a dark highway the corrupt and powerful are constructing in secret, a road to total ruin that winds from the opulent First World through the destitute Third...and all the way to Mars. From the acclaimed author of CIRCUIT OF HEAVEN comes a stunning novel that blends cutting-edge technology with razor-sharp insight into human nature as it propels us across the digital badlands of the twenty-first century. "A very effective novel... [that] bristles with political passion."—Denver Post "One of those rare SF novels that combines human warmth and political insight in an unflinching look at the possible price of technology."—Booklist

Book NewsReal

Download or read book NewsReal written by Tim Ortman and published by News Memoir. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's thousand-channel, blog-heavy news environment, it's tough to envision a time when everyone was, more or less, on the same page; when news coverage was less contentious and delivered in a straightforward fashion. NewsReal is a view through the lens to when such a time did truly exist. Recalled by Emmy Award winning cameraman and producer, Tim Ortman, NewsReal relives a time when the news landscape was owned by the 'Big 4' networks. With their vast assemblage of domestic and international bureaus, enormous budgets and loyal viewers, they were everywhere and anywhere news happened--and as an NBC cameraman, Ortman found himself at the frontlines of these stories. In today's world, the same fact-based reporting competes with an increasing interference from talk show interpretations and online opinions. NrewsReal evokes a time void of that noise. A time when anchormen were more trusted than presidents, the reporting was riveting, the stories were real, and 'Fake News' was nowhere to be found.

Book Breaking the Spell

Download or read book Breaking the Spell written by Robé, Chris and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breaking the Spell offers the first full-length study that charts the historical trajectory of anarchist-inflected video activism from the late 1960s to the present. Two predominant trends emerge from this social movement-based video activism: 1) anarchist-inflected processes increasingly structure its production, distribution, and exhibition practices; and 2) video does not simply represent collective actions and events, but also serves as a form of activist practice in and of itself from the moment of recording to its later distribution and exhibition. Video plays an increasingly important role among activists in the growing global resistance against neoliberal capitalism. As various radical theorists have pointed out, subjectivity itself becomes a key terrain of struggle as capitalism increasingly structures and mines it through social media sites, cell phone technology, and new “flexible” work and living patterns. As a result, alternative media production becomes a central location where new collective forms of subjectivity can be created to challenge aspects of neoliberalism. Chris Robé’s book fills in historical gaps by bringing to light unexplored video activist groups like the Cascadia Forest Defenders, eco-video activists from Eugene, Oregon; Mobile Voices, Latino day laborers harnessing cell phone technology to combat racism and police harassment in Los Angeles; and Outta Your Backpack Media, indigenous youth from the Southwest who use video to celebrate their culture and fight against marginalization. This groundbreaking study also deepens our understanding of more well-researched movements like AIDS video activism, Paper Tiger Television, and Indymedia by situating them within a longer history and wider context of radical video activism.

Book Building Back Truth in an Age of Misinformation

Download or read book Building Back Truth in an Age of Misinformation written by Leslie F. Stebbins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-03-15 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we build back truth online? Here’s how. How can we build back truth online? In this book, researcher Leslie F. Stebbins provides solutions for repairing our existing social media platforms and building better ones that prioritize value over profit, strengthen community ties, and promote access to trustworthy information. Stebbins provides a road map with six paths forward to understand how platforms are designed to exploit us, how we can learn to embrace agency in our interactions with digital spaces, how to build tools to reduce harmful practices, how platform companies can prioritize the public good, how we can repair journalism, and how to strengthen curation to promote trusted content and create new, healthier digital public squares. New, experimental models that are ethically designed to build community and promote trustworthy content are having some early successes. We know that human social networks—online and off—magnify whatever they are seeded with. They are not neutral. We also know that to repair our systems we need to repair their design. We are being joined in the fight by some of the best and brightest minds of our current generation as they flee big tech companies in search of vocations that value integrity and public values. The problem of misinformation is not insurmountable. We can fix this.

Book Autonomous Media

Download or read book Autonomous Media written by Andrea Langlois and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Autonomous Media is a bold and terrific contribution to media activists’ thinking and practice. Langlois and Dubois have captured a number of the most intense communication developments and debates within the current global social justice/altermondialiste move-ments. Like the most promising projects at the present time, they constantly combine local and global issues: low power radio, open publishing, blogging, culture-jamming and more. They provide solid fuel for the fire that continues to burn in Québec, in Canada, and across the planet.” — John Downing, author of Radical Media "Autonomous media activists deploy their weapons of choice - video cameras, spray cans, blogs, laptops - to liberate “meaning-making” from PR specialists and corporate board rooms. As they engage, connect, and project the voices of people around the world who are demanding freedom and justice, they crack open spaces in which social movements can grow and genuine democracy can flourish." — Naomi Klein, author of No Logo “An exciting collection of essays examining the efforts of communities and social move-ments to appropriate media technologies. Autonomous Media: Activating Resistance and Dissent explores vital issues such as re-creating communication and information technologies, re-inventing democracy, and re-designing local and global net-works. Written by media activists, this book is living proof that the construction of knowledge is not restricted to academia; the editors and contributors of Autonomous Media are genuine organic intellectuals producing creative, solid, and significant knowledge from the heart of social change communication initiatives.” — Clemencia Rodriguez author of Fissures in the Mediascape Includes essays from Scott Uzelman, Tom Liacas, Andrea Schmidt, David Widginton, Dawn Paley, the editors, and more. With an afterword by Dorothy Kidd.
