Book Print and Online Newspapers in Europe

Download or read book Print and Online Newspapers in Europe written by Richard Wurff and published by Maklu. This book was released on 2005 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number and use of online newspapers has increased tremendously since the first ones appeared around 1995. Since that time, scholarly and practical thinking about the significance of this new phenomenon has gone through the inevitable stages of euphoria and doom. It is only in the last few years that we have entered a more temperate period, in which publishers gradually work towards finding the appropriate place for online newspapers in news markets. The time is ripe for a comprehensive assessment of how online newspapers are changing newspaper markets in Europe. This book discusses their impact on news and newspaper markets in 18 countries in Europe. The countries covered include both small and large countries, from Eastern and Western Europe.

Book News Networks in Early Modern Europe

Download or read book News Networks in Early Modern Europe written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: News Networks in Early Modern Europe attempts to redraw the history of European news communication in the 16th and 17th centuries. News is defined partly by movement and circulation, yet histories of news have been written overwhelmingly within national contexts. This volume of essays explores the notion that early modern European news, in all its manifestations – manuscript, print, and oral – is fundamentally transnational. These 37 essays investigate the language, infrastructure, and circulation of news across Europe. They range from the 15th to the 18th centuries, and from the Ottoman Empire to the Americas, focussing on the mechanisms of transmission, the organisation of networks, the spread of forms and modes of news communication, and the effects of their translation into new locales and languages.

Book Reporting U S European Relations

Download or read book Reporting U S European Relations written by Michael Rice and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reporting U.S.-European Relations: Four Nations, Four Newspapers is a compilation of U.S. and European perspectives from different daily newspapers. Chapter 1 is about the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ). After a brief background of the newspaper, from one dictator to another, the paper is described as having no editor. The political, economic, and cultural policies are made by ""editor-publishers."" Political philosophy in the FAZ is very cohesive and conservative, which readers of a wide political spectrum rely upon. Chapter 2 deals with the New York Times, which is founded in 1851 and has undergone many changes, making it the most respected daily newspaper in the United States. This circulation is considered a chronologist of current events, and more than an opinion maker, it is also considered an educator. Chapter 3 is about The Times (London), founded in 1785 under a different name. This circulation is one of the most influential newspapers in the world, with a succession of notable editors. Considered by some as boring, this newspaper is bought by Rupert Murdoch, making it still in substance a uniquely British expression of life. Chapter 4 is about Le Monde, founded in December 1944 upon the request of General Charles de Gaulle. This circulation is considered the most important and prestigious daily newspaper in France, very nationalistic, and a receptacle for debate. This collection of essays will prove invaluable to practicing journalists, politicians, public and government leaders, and students of journalism. Writers and authors will also find this collection entertaining and informative.

Book The Dissemination of News and the Emergence of Contemporaneity in Early Modern Europe

Download or read book The Dissemination of News and the Emergence of Contemporaneity in Early Modern Europe written by Brendan Dooley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern communications allow the instant dissemination of information and images, creating a sensation of virtual presence at events that occur far away. This sensation gives meaning to the notions of 'real time' and of a 'present' that is shared within and among societies”in other words, a sensation of contemporaneity. But how were time and space conceived before modernity? When did this begin to change in Europe? To help answer such questions, this volume looks at the exchange of information and the development of communications networks at the dawn of journalism, when widespread public and private networks first emerged for the transmission of political news. What happened in Prague quickly reached Venice, and what happened in Naples was soon the talk of Hamburg. Gradually, enough became known about daily affairs around Europe for people to begin to think in terms of a 'shared present'. An analysis of contemporaneity adds a new dimension to the study of the origins of news and media history, as well as to the origins of a European identity. For whilst our understanding of the circulation of manuscript newsletters and printed reports has increased in recent years, much less is known about the impact of this burgeoning journalism on a pan-European scale. Each essay in this volume explores the ways in which this international impact helped foster a developing sense of contemporaneity that encompassed not just single countries, but Europe as a whole. Taken together the collection offers the first panoramic view of the way stories were born, grew and matured during their transmission from source to source, from country to country. The results published here suggest that a continent-wide network, including manuscript and print, for the transmission of stories from place to place, existed and was effective.

Book Communicating the News in Early Modern Europe

Download or read book Communicating the News in Early Modern Europe written by Jenni Hyde and published by . This book was released on 2023-11-29 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of early modern news focuses on news itself rather than specific material forms. Centering on movement through different media, time, and place, it makes the case for a truly comparative, pan-European history of news. After the Introduction, the second section, News Moves, explores how we think about and research news culture and news communication, demonstrating movement is more important than static forms. The third, News Sings, focuses on news ballads, comparing actors, publics, music, and soundscapes of ballad singing in several European cities, highlighting the central role of immaterial elements, such as sound, music and voice. The fourth, News Counts, argues that seeing news the way a machine might read it-through its metadata-is one way of moving beyond form, allowing us to find surprising commonalities in news cultures which differ greatly in both time and place.

Book Media revolution in Europe ahead of the curve

Download or read book Media revolution in Europe ahead of the curve written by Karol Jakubowicz and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2011-04-13 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "rags to riches" story of Karol Jakubowicz's involvement in the work of the Council of Europe took him from the role of an awestruck newcomer from Poland in 1990 to that of the Chairman of the Steering Committee on the Media and New Communication Services (2005-06). Along the way, he was elected, delegated by the Steering Committee, and invited by the Council of Europe Secretariat to serve in a number of other capacities. In all of them, he contributed a wide variety of papers, reports and studies to assist the steering committee and other bodies in collecting information and formulating ideas in the general field of freedom of expression, creation of free and democratic media systems (including the issue of public service media), regulation of transfrontier television, the adjustment of Council of Europe human rights standards to the conditions of the information society, and the development of broadcasting legislation in Council of Europe member states. The present collection of these papers and reports is published in the conviction that they retain their value and relevance. It provides the additional benefit of offering a glimpse of the work preceding the formulation of Committee of Ministers recommendations and declarations, as well as resolutions of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly.
