Book Broadcasting the End of Apartheid

Download or read book Broadcasting the End of Apartheid written by Martha Evans and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Africa came late to television; when it finally arrived in the late 1970s the rest of the world had already begun to boycott the country because of apartheid. While the ruling National Party feared the integrative effects of television, they did not foresee how exclusion from globally unifying broadcasts would gradually erode their power. South Africa was barred from participating in some of television's greatest global attractions (including sporting events such as the Olympics and contests such as Miss World). With the release of Nelson Mandela from prison came a proliferation of large-scale live broadcasts as the country was permitted to return to international competition, and its re-admittance was played out on television screens across the world. These events were pivotal in shaping and consolidating the country's emerging post-apartheid national identity. Broadcasting the End of Apartheid assesses the socio-political effects of live broadcasting on South Africa's transition to democracy. Martha Evans argues that just as print media had a powerful influence on the development of Afrikaner nationalism, so the 'liveness' of television helped to consolidate the post-apartheid South African national identity.

Book excerpt: For Iran the years since Ayatollah Khomeini's death have been dominated by the need for political consolidation and economic reconstruction. The book assesses the critical dilemmas of the regime both previous to and since the demise of its first spiritual leader. The vital issues of political succession and constitutional reform are addressed, contributing to an analysis of the structures and politics of power. How these have reflected upon economic policy is considered with close atttention being given to the reform policies of Rafsanjani. Foreign policy and security issues are discussed in both regional and global terms and include a study of Iranian defence strategy and its controversial re-armament drive. The final chapter examines the direction and context of all of these major policy areas, providing an analysis of whether the Islamic Republic truly represents a revolutionary alternative for the Third World or whether in fact it has developed in time to fall within a similar mould to other notable revolutions, casting by the wayside any uniquely Islamic agenda and alternatives. At the heart of this study is the belief that the Islamic regime has, since the cease-fire with Iraq, but more specifically since Ayatollah Khomeini's death passed into a new stage of development, referred to in the book as the `Second Republic'.

Book Weapons of Mass Destruction

Download or read book Weapons of Mass Destruction written by Raja Menon and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2004 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of international attempts to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction, this volume of essays by well-known analysts: examines what the threat to India could entail; highlights the differences between state use of these weapons and their use by non-state actors; discusses possible scenarios India needs to guard against and protective measures it can take; and determines the position the Indian government needs to take in the international arena in respect of initiatives to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction. A salient feature of the book is the detailed suggestions it offers of efforts required to set up material and human resources to respond to such catastrophes.
