Book News from Wandaland

Download or read book News from Wandaland written by Kodell Parker and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-05-18 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sending emails 'You have News from Wandaland" to family and friends all across the states and to foreign countries is a hobby of Kodell Parker. He lives on a small cattle farm in north east Texas where cattle graze and coyotes sing at night. He often wrote about some amusing experience or happening. This became an interest after having retired from a major Oil Company in Alaska in the late 70's, and settling down in Texas. Since there are days for no hay pitching, stalls to clean or fences to fix there was time for other satisfying and pleasurable activities to engage in. In the bunk house in the drawer of an old file cabinet which has seen its better days is a folder containing copies of many e-mails he has sent to a mail list over the past few years. He never kept any of the replies sent to him for reasons which have escaped his mind. Often comments about a certain subject written about were received. It was not uncommon for someone to say "better layoff the juice" or "hide the jug in the barn." There was one who said that he was a "hoot" whatever that is. When the "mood "came upon him to tell folks hither and yonder how it is at Wandaland he just weighed in and commenced to write. His e-mails are styled as "News from Wandaland where the cows are always hungry and never give up their milk." More than once a person or two would say you should write a book about that. This is a collection of a few of his "News from Wandaland" just to show that he is not "loco", strange or a complete idiot as some people have commented. Perhaps you will say there is a wrangler "out there" sending e-mails all over the country and you should read one or two. The short stories are Reflection of rural life of the Parker family of fifteen siblings living in East Texas. The author penned the stories when he worked for a major oil company at Dead Horse, Alaska in the 1970's when there was total dark days and "cabin fever" would set it. He truly hopes the e-mails and the short stories are pleasurable.. Thank you for allowing them to be shared with you. Sincerely, Kodell Parker, head wrangler at Wandaland.

Book excerpt: If you take Boston's Blue Line to its northern end, you'll reach the Wonderland stop. Few realize that a twenty-three-acre amusement park once sat nearby—the largest in New England, and grander than any of the Coney Island parks that inspired it. Opened in Revere on Memorial Day in 1906 to great fanfare, Wonderland offered hundreds of thousands of visitors recreation by the sea, just a short distance from downtown Boston. The story of the park's creation and wild, but brief, success is full of larger-than-life characters who hoped to thrill attendees and rake in profits. Stephen R. Wilk describes the planning and history of the park, which featured early roller coasters, a scenic railway, a central lagoon in which a Shoot-the-Chutes boat plunged, an aerial swing, a funhouse, and more. Performances ran throughout the day, including a daring Fires and Flames show; a Wild West show; a children's theater; and numerous circus acts. While nothing remains of what was once called "Boston's Regal Home of Pleasure" and the park would close in 1910, this book resurrects Wonderland by transporting readers through its magical gates.

Elizabeth, a twenty-four-year-old interior designer living in Brooklyn, New York, encounters a little more than mental static when she sits down for her morning meditation, feeling disconnected from herself and her reality. As she meditates, she forces herself to confront her inner demons head on-including the darker parts that she would rather keep hidden from others, like her boyfriend, Adam. Her inner conflict leads her down a rabbit hole that is far different from the one she remembers from her favorite childhood story. When Elizabeth reaches the bottom of the rabbit hole, she follows a shadowy figure in a familiar blue dress who taunts her and coaxes her deeper into Wonderland. Unable to release herself from her meditation, Elizabeth chases Alice through Wonderland, guided by clues left by Alice, as well as the dark and strangely familiar characters she meets, like the Cheshire Cat, the Tweedle twins, and the Mad Hatter. In Wonderland, Elizabeth comes face to face with her inner light and darkness, and, finally, Alice-and discovers that Alice's secret might be what she has been searching for all along.

Interior decorator Summer Thornton believes in designing with the wildest abandon: her world is one of nickel tubs, marble fireplaces, whimsical textiles, surprising patterns, and secret gardens. Often described as maximalist with a modern, fresh sensibility, Thornton manages to achieve highly polished, sophisticated interiors that indulge in a lighthearted, almost irreverent sense of whimsy. In her first book, she will inspire readers to follow their creative impulses and make their own rules. Let yourself be transported with the dreamy, fantastical homes arranged by theme in Wonderland. “Fearless Romantic” features Thornton’s own gorgeous city house. “In Here Comes the Sun,” peek into an over-the-top tropical vacation home that’s centered on citrus. Plus take a deep dive into the most colorful technicolor homes she’s ever designed in “Super Saturated.” With outstanding photography from A-list photog-raphers including Thomas Loof, Bjorn Wallander, Annie Schlechter, and Melanie Acevedo, and styling by AD contributor Mieke ten Have, Wonderlandis a celebration of personal expression and fearless escapism.

Book excerpt: "Everyone knows the old saying "necessity is the mother of invention," but if you do a paternity test on many of the modern world's most important ideas or institutions, you will find, invariably, that leisure and play were involved in the conception as well." Most history books don't concern themselves with delight. History is the serious business of war, treaties, governments and monarchs. This is a different kind of history book. Steven Johnson argues that if you want to understand how we got to now, you have to understand pleasure and play. A staggering amount of the landscape of modern life is populated by environments and technology designed to entertain and delight us. Here history of popular entertainment, arguing that the pursuit of novelty and wonder is a powerful driver of world-shaping technological change. Throughout history, he locates the cutting edge of innovation wherever people are working the hardest to keep themselves and others amused. He introduces us to the colorful innovators of leisure: the explorers, proprietors, showmen, and artists who changed the trajectory of history with their luxurious wares, exotic meals, taverns, gambling tables, and magic shows.

Book excerpt: At the age of thirteen, Danny Sugerman- the already wayward product of Beverley Hills wealth and privilege- went to his first Doors concert. He never looked back. He became Jim Morrison's protégé and- still in his teens- manager of the Doors and then Iggy Pop. He also plunged gleefully into the glamorous underworld of the rock 'n' roll scene, diving headfirst into booze, sex and drugs: every conceivable kind of drug, ever day, in every possible permutation. By the age of twenty-one he had an idyllic home, a beautiful girlfriend, the best car in the world, two kinds of hepatitis, a diseased heart, a $500 a day heroin habit and only a week to live. He lived. This is his tale. Excessive, scandalous, comic, cautionary and horrifying, it chronicles the 60s dream gone to rot and the early life of a Hollywood Wild Child who was just brilliant at being bad.
