This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Reports of the Town of Newmarket, New Hampshire, by the Selectmen, Town Clerk, Tax Collector, Town Treasurer, and Other Town Departments, Boards and Commissions: For the Year Ending December 31, 1986; With the Vital Statistics for 1986 In conjunction with the growth of the Town after the March 1986 meeting the Town Offices were completely computerized. The Board purchased a new computer with four terminals. The system is Televideo put out by Business Management Systems out of Laconia, N. H. These terminals allow the work force to work right from their desk. While this system was being implemented we also re-organized the office staff to make it more responsive to the needs of our fast growing community without hiring any further help. Also, we were extensively involved with the State with the closing of our landfill which is still ongoing. The closing was compounded by the finding of a possible toxic waste problem. A big disappointment to the Board was after lengthy meetings with the State we were not able to have the State bring the Route #152 railroad bridge up to present standards so that it would be safe for all transportation. We were able to have Boston Maine repair the bridge and bring it up to its present load limit of 16 tons. This year there was a complete re-organization of the Conservation Commission and they are actively working with our Planning Board and Recreation Department in order to save as much of our open space as is possible. With the current development open space within the community is fast being lost. They are currently in the process of setting up a land conservation purchase agreement to purchase land on behalf of the Town that would remain as open space. This is only one of the many projects they are currently working on. The problems being left to the incoming administration will be the ongoing closure of the landfill and the solving of the toxic waste prob lem that is there plus the continued action of trying to force the upgrading of the Route #152 Boston and Maine bridge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newmarket, a quaint seacoast town incorporated in 1727, has long been a hotbed of industry, recreation, and culture. Bordered by the Lamprey River, the town is known for its mill buildings, which essentially make up the architectural backbone and industrial fabric of the downtown area. The earliest settlers took to fishing, lumbering, and shipbuilding on the banks of the Lamprey as their principal means of income and survival; the mills would later provide the town with economic stability through textile- and shoe-manufacturing enterprises. The town also boasted the largest single-room weave shed in the world at the height of its industrial textile boom. Today, Newmarket is a noted settlement, home to both longtime residents as well as college students and faculty who commute nearby to the University of New Hampshire. Locals treasure the Stone Church Meeting House, a music venue established in 1969 within the stone walls of a once prominent Universalist church that was built at the top of famed Zion Hill in 1832. The town has been revitalized in recent years by the equally historic renovations of the downtown mill buildings, which now host a myriad of units, from residential to commercial properties.

Book Small Town Big Oil

Download or read book Small Town Big Oil written by David W. Moore and published by Diversion Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How three New Hampshire women triumphed over an oil billionaire: “A very timely reminder that when we fight we often win.”—Bill McKibben Never underestimate the underdog. In 1973, Greek oil shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis—husband of President John F. Kennedy’s widow, Jacqueline, and arguably the richest man in the world—proposed to build an oil refinery on the narrow New Hampshire coast, in the town of Durham. At the time, it would have cost $600 million to build and was expected to generate 400,000 barrels of oil per day, making it the largest oil refinery in the world. The project was vigorously supported by the governor, Meldrim Thomson, and by William Loeb, the notorious publisher of the only statewide newspaper, the Manchester Union Leader. But three women vehemently opposed the project—Nancy Sandberg, the town leader who founded and headed Save Our Shores; Dudley Dudley, the freshman state rep who took the fight to the state legislature; and Phyllis Bennett, the publisher of the local newspaper that alerted the public to Onassis’ secret acquisition of the land. Small Town, Big Oil is the story of how the residents of Durham, led by these three women, out-organized, out-witted, and out-maneuvered the governor, the media, and the Onassis cartel to hand the powerful Greek billionaire the most humiliating defeat of his business career, and spare the New Hampshire seacoast from becoming an industrial wasteland. “Activists and organizers will find lots of ideas and inspirations in this book's detailed account of an epic battle.”—Bill McKibben “[An] apt handbook on the power of the people.”—Providence Journal

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the Town of New Market, New Hampshire, for the Year Ending December 31st, 1988: Newmarket School District, for the Year July 1st, 1987 to June 30th, 1988 In 1907 the editor of the Boston Post newspaper undertook as a pro motional device the distribution of several hundred fancy walking sticks intended to be awarded to the eldest citizen of the recipient towns. Between 400 to 600 of the canes were sent to towns in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine and New Hampshire, each engraved on the head. No official town record has been found of the many men and women so honored over the many years and we wish to begin an honor roll of these grand residents. We wish to display the cane along with the names and ages of each individual and would appreciate names dates and ages of prior recipients. Newmarket's cane is 36 inches long, the shaft of African ebony, the engraved brass head covered in 14 karat gold, inscribed with the words presented by the Boston Post to the Oldest Citizen of Newmarket, N. H. At the present time Elizabeth Mathes is the honored holder at the grand age of 100 years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
